17 Best Things to Do in Houston

"ManReady Mercantile, an independent boutique, is truly one of a kind, with the first candle bar in Houston. You'll also find locally made leather goods, baseball hats, a whiskey bar, perfumes, T-shirts, and many other quirky, whimsical, and high-quality items. Started by Travis Weaver, the shop feels like an endless Pandora's Box of goodies. If money is no object, pick up a Coronado Leather Bison Duffel ($799), a men's solid cologne by Alfred Lane, a hand-poured, bespoke candle, or a pair of polarized Shwood sunglasses. Also, ask the cashier on the second floor to mix you an Old Fashioned—it's a perk of shopping here." - Charu Suri

We made candles with Grace as a team building activity for work. Grace was super fun and helpful and the store is great! Highly recommend as a fun activity for a group.

Google
First time making candles and had a blast. Awesome date night and great times with friends. Sean was fantastic and made us feel right at home. Also, you could literally buy me anything from this shop and I’d love it.

Google
A couple of friends and I took the candle making class with Rick and had an absolute blast! He was extremely knowledgeable about the different collections of scents and what would pair well. He truly made it feel like we were all friends there just having a good time. I already loved Manready for their incredible clothing, home goods and new local pantry downstairs, but the class has opened a newfound love for this place. Highly recommend! Thank you Rick!!!

Google
This place is awesome. The staff are great, everyone is pretty friendly. You can find some pretty cool stuff here. I always find time to stop in and see what's new when I'm in the heights.

I was surprised with a candle making class from a few close friends. Upon arrival, we were greeted by Rick and we were all so impressed with him. He had us laughing the entire time and it really made the candle class such a blast! Highly recommend this candle making bar to anyone who’s considered it! Thank you for such a great time, Rick!!!

Google
Grace was incredible! We enjoyed a candle making class, and she was amazing, and really sweet! The place is beautiful, very coo, and the attention is simply perfect! Such a great spot if you’re looking for a unique and fun experience.

I'm always on the lookout for a fun place to take a date. This definitely fills the bill! Although the person who normally does the candle bar was out, Bailey stepped up to teach us and did an amazing job! He has a great personality and a very deep knowledge about what scents work together, as well as teaching us about Manready Mercantile, which I had never been to. We started by sniffing each of the 40 or so different fragrance blends they had. We even tried combinations and got great feedback from Bailey about what typically works well and what a lot of people enjoy using. Manready uses 100% soy wax. Gentlemen, definitely take your lady here! You can have a drink and go home with a souvenir that will make her think of you every time she lights it. And ladies, my date said that this would be something she wants to take her girl group to! Please note that taking the class gets you to 15% off of merchandise the day of. This is a great place to pick up a birthday, father's day, graduation, christmas, or "just-because" gift for any man in your life.

Yelp
I've been in here a couple of times, they have really neat stuff and amazing customer service! Definitely check it out! Everything is top quality

Yelp
Cool store with a large selection. That's what stood out to me -- they have clothing, accessories, edible items, personal hygiene items, and more. You can tell the selection has been carefully curated. I believe there is an effort made here to promote quality American made products -- this comes with a higher price tag (or just a price tag we're no longer used to because we're all used to buying Chinese junk?) That being said, there are different price points and ongoing sales. There is also a candle bar downstairs, which is a nice touch (and a cool idea for dates). Despite having a large selection, the shop was very organized and pleasant to explore. It also had some cool decor -- you can tell a lot of thought went into decorating. For tourists and Instagram fiends -- there is a wall with a Texas welcome mural and an old car you can climb in. Fun and smart marketing. This is one of those shops where the owner is very present and involved in the entire process. It seems like he cares tremendously about his business and its customers. I really appreciate that sort of commitment. Definitely give this place a go if you're looking for a unique gift. Great selection, excellent craftsmanship promoting American companies/artisans, and top-notch service. What else can you ask for?

Rosalyn D.

Yelp
My daughter and I were in recently for a candle making class. Grace helped us have an awesome experience. She was very knowledgeable about the process, the scents, and the company itself. We found it very interesting and fun! We first bought candles from Manready Mercantile at Nutcracker Market a couple of years ago and were happy to find the store in the Heights. It is a great location and has such a cool selection of products, in addition to a really great vibe. Everyone we talked to was very nice and helpful. Overall, a great experience! We would highly recommend the candle making experience, and the store itself. We'll definitely be back.

Claudia W.

Yelp
Candle making is a blast! Fun staff! Love this place. Great things. Ask for Grace, she's awesome.

Yelp
What an absolutely cool store, I even asked the sales associate if I could come back with my book to park it and read. It smelled like heaven in this store, with a unique gift for every man in your life.

Yelp
This is a store for men, with all kinds of men's clothing, accessories, and interesting items, many of which are unique. They have a neat cologne that I haven't seen elsewhere. The only downside, prices are on the higher end for me, but again. You'll find things here that you wouldn't find elsewhere. And speaking of unique, they offer a complimentary "Old Fashion" drink that is perfect! No cost, but please tip. Other drinks are offered as well, the fixings are displayed on the makeshift bar. The main retail part of the store is upstairs, so prepare for the climb, but it's not too bad. I find this a cool place to walk around while the wife is in Jubilee.
google avatar

Stacey W.

Yelp
Excellent candles, atmosphere and staff. Fine quality entertainment. Nick was a great help and taught us to make great candles. They have such a far throw, I'll be going back.

Yelp
Stopped here for the first time last weekend. I wish I would've found this a few years ago. They carry awesome brands such as Freenote Cloth, Bradley Mountain (bags), amongst others. I already had several Freenote Cloth shirts/pants, and Bradley Mountain bags, and was happy to see that they carry them here. They had a good sale downstairs, and I walked out with a couple more Freenote cloth long sleeves and a short sleeve henley I found upstairs. Staff was friendly and knowledgeable. The overall vibe in the store and layout was awesome. Look forward to future trips back!

Yelp
So, this place was recommended to me, but I foolishly ignored the recommendation for a long time. When I did stop in, I immediately realized this place has a very cool, very authentic, and very unique feel to it. You'll be immediately greeted by an enormous 48 star American flag, which sets the stage for a club-like experience. We were welcomed by Travis where I learned his story and that of the shop. Locally sourced products blended with some of the finest examples of old fashioned craftsmanship from across the Nation can be found here. Head upstairs to what can best be described as a comfortable, welcoming club room and find unique, well-made products with a masculine look and feel. I picked up a few candles from the candle bar (yep, you read that right), incense cones (look for the one called Desert Sage from the Square Trade Goods Co.), a felt banner, a bundle of Palo Santo wood incense, a concrete ashtray, and a hand forged brass cuff. All of them were selected because they are useful and well made, but you really can't go wrong wIth most anything in this shop. They have done a great job of curating a collection of high quality products from true artisans who care about what they make. It's this kind of authenticity that we need more of in these times in my opinion and Manready Mercantile delivers. Oh, (for those of age) why not shop with an on-the-house Old Fashioned cocktail while you're at it? Indeed, they are gracious hosts here! So, consider checking it out. I think you'll be glad you did.

Yelp
Manready Mercantile has been a staple to my Houston life. It's great to pop in for the best smelling candles and gifts for really anyone in your family. All high quality goods and Travis(the owner) takes pride in his work and his employees. He's incredibly personable and always makes you feel like you're at home. I'll be shopping here forever.

Olive H.

Yelp
Really cool store with several different types of goods. Great for Christmas shopping!

Yelp
My brother in law is turning 40 this weekend and I have been hard pressed to find something for him. I have been to the Manready booth at Nutcracker many times so I thought maybe I could find something for him here. I came after work, about an hour before close, and there were 3 employees here and no one said a single thing to me, not one word! There were two other patrons and it did not look like they were being helped either. I left with nothing and I would have been an easy sell and I still have no clue what to get my brother in law. I'm very disappointed.
google avatar

Nina G.

Yelp
I am reeling with anger that someone would give a company like this less than 5 stars because of their idea behind retail pricing. The truth is, my family and I have been visiting Manready since they opened. In fact, we were invited by a mutual friend to attend their opening. We do not personally know the owner nor have we ever been formally introduced so this is not a post promoted by friendship. We have purchased gifts for the men in our family from 5 years old to 75. I have purchased thank you gifts to birthday gifts at this location. The people working in the space have been top-notch with their friendliness (genuine apart from just trying to sell) and knowledge of their artisanal merchandise. Their products are uncompromised in quality and I love that we have a unique outlet to support local artisans. Keep on truckin' guys. My whole fam is a big fan!

Yelp
Brought my friends here for a bachelor party weekend and had to come visit the infamous Manready shop here in the heart of the Heights and was greeted by the super helpful Taylor as she helped us buy candles, make Old Fashioneds and enjoy a glimpse of a true Texas feel of a store. Loved the selection and quality of the t-shirts and the vibe of this place. Today they had a deal on candles, and I picked up their bestselling Bergamot and Teak and also got some of their absolutely amazing Whiskey and Campfire Jerky, which you must try!!

Yelp
The best in men's everything !!! The store is curated extremely well and all the staff are knowledgeable with there product .
google avatar

Barbara P.

Yelp
Manready Mercantile is amazing! Not only is it the perfect place for the men in your life, there's plenty of things that I loved and wanted to buy as well. Homemade candles that smell divine. Leather goods, food products ( think chimichurri and hot sauces) and some awesome cook books. The downstairs portion reminds me of a rustic barbershop and the upstairs is the ultimate man cave. They have a bar and will make complimentary drinks. Get the old fashioned! With the holidays coming I will definitely be back here to shop for all of the men in my life.
google avatar

Yelp
This store is so fun to visit each time! The staff is friendly/knowledgeable, and the store has so many cool manly things to discover each time. I recently visited this weekend with my pup, Ollie to buy stocking stuffers for my husband and Dad! So many great unique options!!! Also, they will make you an Old Fashion while you shop, which helps :)

Desiree B.

Yelp
Love this shop! My son's are always so happy when they receive a gift or gift card from this great shop! Great sales and customer service too! You must check out Man Ready Mercantile!

J M.

Yelp
I can't say enough great things about this business! Very unique items and a "must visit" place in the Heights. I purchased a Tres Cuervos CenterFire bracelet and a, made on-site, candle. Customer service is second to none, they really take care of and value their customers!
google avatar

Yelp
Great place for men's gifts! I accidentally found this place when I needed a last minute gift for my nephew on the way to LA. They used to have a store in the airport. I bought a super soft $40 T-shirt that said Houston. Super simple and I thought at the time OVER priced BUT He loves this T-shirt!! Wears it ALL THE TIME! So...it's easy for me now for Christmas cuz he needs a different one. After some digging, I found them! I stopped in the store tonight and got a different one. It's made of organic cotton which makes for a thinner and softer T-shirt so I'm told by the sales person. They have very limited quantities of all their items. Super nice and superior quality Houston and Texas branded items for gifts. They have some amazing candles too! Great customer service! An awesome local spot that I would have never found had they not been in the right place at the right time. I'll be checking in again to hopefully get him more when they stock up. The clerk said probably not before Christmas. They ha w lots of other great things though so definitely check it out!

Trisha T.

Yelp
Sorry I have to give this place one star at all. I walked in and said that I wanted to buy a shaving kit for my dad. The guy said they didn't have it and basically ignored my follow up questions. I wanted to spend money in this store, but the sales associate was rude and unhelpful, so much so that I walked out. Don't waste your time, they don't want to sell things. They are more interested in making a playlist than selling merchandise.
google avatar

Ariel H.

Yelp
Edited review** I initially wrote the review below about the place being overpriced in reference to a candle I purchased. I am correcting it now after Travis, the owner, took the time to explain why the value of the candle in a justifiable and sincere way. I have been burning the hell out of the damn candle since and it definitely smells amazing. (original review) A bit overpriced in my opinion. My friend had me pick out a candle as a holiday gift, turned out to be just under $40 with tax. I just don't get why someone would charge that much for scented wax... besides the price it has a solid hipster aesthetic if that's your thing.
google avatar

Taylor T.

Yelp
This place is just awesome. The entire atmosphere of the store, as well as the items they sell really give it 5 stars. They have some of the most neat items I've seen. Salvaged goods as well as handmade items and artisan brands. Very cool stuff! I'm not even a man, and I love their bags and other neat goods. They make you feel really welcome and comfortable. It almost reminds me of a house with really awesome things for show, except they're for sale! Haha. Definitely one of those places you just need to visit!
google avatar

Todd T.

Yelp
If you are looking for something special and unique this is the place for you. I have really enjoyed the candles, clothes and leather goods. I appreciate the stores desire to support others in the USA making quality products. I have always received quality customer service.

Yelp
Beautiful space, super friendly staff, hand crafted merchandise. If I were a guy I would grow a beard and carry one of their canvas bags everyday! Don't think you are gonna walk in and get a shirt for $20. Most I saw were around $150. But the quality, if that's more what you care about, is top notch. They carry Bradley Mountain bags. Some of the most well made and versatile canvas travel bags you will find. For a guy that needs to look cool and professional at the same time they also have waxed canvas bags from Vermilyea Pelle. These are serious carry bags for anyone and you will drop some serious coin. But they are really, really nice. Check out the candles, body wash, cologne, pomade and beard oil for a special guy's gift. These are quality handmade items. You can buy online. But go into the store. Walk around. Take a look at the unique accessories and actually feel the product's high standard of craftsmanship. But remember this place for a special birthday or Christmas gift for the guy in your life.

Yelp
This store is a staple of the heights now! They do such a great job of bringing small independent businesses together into a great collective. It's quite irrational to judge a store of this type for their price tags considering the quality and skill that has gone into the products by the suppliers. Keep in mind that the suppliers are people that have spent time cultivating their crafts.. such as leather work or metal work. I especially love the candle making bar that's in the first floor in the fact that you get to design the sense that best suit you. So much variety to the store that you can find something to enjoy no matter who you are! Without a doubt a great small business that brings other small businesses together for people of all types and preferences.
google avatar

Misty A.

Yelp
Manready Mercantile is both trendy and practical. The owner, Travis Weaver, has hand selected every item in the store, and it certainly shows. My son, who is a very picky 15-year-old, has fallen in love with the t-shirts because they are incredibly soft. The quality that is put into each product is higher than any national department stores. Not only are the products outstanding, but so is the customer service. You won't find a more professional group of people. I highly recommend supporting this local business. I can't wait to try out the candle bar the next time I buy. Thanks Travis Weaver for providing the Houston community with such a unique and outstanding store!
google avatar

Chad S.

Yelp
Manready Mercantile is an amazing place and is something that's hard to find these days - a store with great products AND its own identity. It's nice to walk into a place with such a great atmosphere -- people are friendly and the shop has a great vintage feel. Yes, the products are expensive, but they are great, quality products and each product is selected for a reason. The people that work at Manready know their products too.
google avatar

Rome S.

Yelp
Complementary drinks & amazing service. They are super attentive and make sure you buy the perfect items for your loved ones. The selection is impeccably curated & relatively affordable. I love shopping here for my husband & male relatives. Plus their candles are amazing!!!! Definitely recommend, check them out this holiday season.

Christopher F.

Yelp
I bought a hat from these guys online (their stuff is so fresh, but that's a biased opinion). Anyways, ordered the hat yesterday and it literally shipped within 10 minutes. No exaggeration at all. Got the hat before 24 hours of ordering. Wished all retailers were this solid at their operation. Good job guys! As a first timer with this shop, I'll definitely be shopping here again!

Yelp
You know when you walk into a business that's so meticulously yet comfortably put together you think to yourself, "I could live here"? Yeah. That's what happened while strolling in last Saturday afternoon. Downstairs, there are some beautiful wooden clocks, a comfortable leather couch with a magnificent tree stump coffee table and American Flag hanging. First impressions don't get much better than this for me. Oh wait, yes they do: there was a sweet and gentle dog that greeted me upstairs! This place will have some sort of unique something for any dude. From Buffalo wallets, nifty accessories, useful nik-naks and and cool apparel, I can bet I can find a gift for every bro in my life. The staff was kind and was obviously passionate about their store and a quality for life in general.
google avatar

Hunter H.

Yelp
I've been a fan of the shop for years and bought several items through the website, but I made my first pilgrimage to the actual store front today. It was awesome. They have only the highest quality products and a great staff. Travis (the owner) was super helpful in finding sizes. He was knowledgable about all the products, brands, and the people behind them.
google avatar

Matt H.

Yelp
This place is pretty damn awesome. Have heard great things, but finally made it there this weekend. It's the ultimate place for a dude to hang out & comfortably outfit themselves with some man gear. Travis, the owner, is a super cool fella that made us feel welcome. Will definitely be back soon.
google avatar

Ed L.

Yelp
Manready is simply a dude's crash-pad amped up beyond belief, with a dash of old-school "grandpa was the original hipster" vibe. Simply love it. Stopped in today for a shave and a haircut from the Cutthroat crew downstairs and, frankly - I won't go anywhere else in Houston again. Solid cut, shaped up my Movember overgrowth and left having had a solid half hour of great conversation. Carlos was a pro and could not have been nicer. Glad to see the shop succeed and even more glad to have a place that encourages classic manhood and dapper/comfort style. Bottom line: go for the shave and haircut; explore the goods; and keep coming back for lessons on upping your guy-style.
google avatar

John R.

Yelp
Great store and one stop shop for my wife for my birthday and father's day gifts, awesome popcorn, jerky, t-shirts (I have the Buffalo and whiskey blooded, waiting for more designs) ! Was able to add to my richer poorer sock collection and Taylor made shirts And hard not to love the open bar while browsing

Michael G.

Yelp
I've been a customer of MM since 2016. I've always been impressed with the quality of the goods, and the knowledgeable staff. This is a fantastic place to have in the neighborhood! Best wishes in 2020!

Yelp
I adore shopping small and local. Even more so, I love a great space. So when I brought my boyfriend to experience my favorite street in Houston, we came across Manready (which I hadn't seen before--it's been several months). He was a bit taken aback by the prices, but after I explained that it's a small business and that's typically how they're priced because of the workmanship and locality, he loved it. I will definitely be back for our anniversary to buy him one of the beautiful wallets, and maybe a candle for myself because I loved how they smelled!

Yelp
I went here recently for a haircut and shave, so I feel compelled to write a review about the place... It is one part old-school barber shop where you can still get a straight razor shave done the old-fashioned way and one part hipster explosion of man goods. It is a combo that is working. I got one of the best haircuts and shaves that I have found in Houston here. The cut was professional and the barber spent a good deal of time making sure that it was done right. At so many barber shops they worry about volume so much that it is in and out of the chair in thirty minutes and you live with what you get. Here, I felt that they were committed to making my hair look the best that it could. The shave was a real treat...skillfully performed with a straight razor, lots of hot towels, and warm shaving foam. I am a bit of a shave aficionado and have been to nearly every place offering shaves here in Houston, and this one was one of the best that I have found to date. If you have never experienced a professional shave before you need to try it out...you will be hooked, my friend. Now, the upstairs is like a man emporium of local and custom and one-off man products, from leather goods to tools to clothing to grooming products. They always have some sort of spirit there to enjoy whilst looking around, and the shop smells amazing, like leather, and spice, and wood. I am not a hipster, but this is the sort of shop that could convert me...all of the stuff that screams hipster (there is a heavy hipster vibe in this joint) just begs to be bought and utilized. Seriously, it is a cool shop and has a lot of interesting curiosities for sale. On the whole, I would stronly recommend this shop if you are a guy or if you are looking for something for a special man in your life. It is worth a visit, even if only for a solid haircut and an amazing shving experience.

Yelp
Love this place. Everytime I go in the staff genuinely remembers me and we have great conversations. They've always done something to make it a special encounter. They know their lane and they stay in it! This kind of clarity of thought is refreshing! Work hard. Live well. Everything I've purchased from them is high quality. Great spot.

Yelp
I carry a knife that I needed to protect while in my pocket. I searched everywhere and could not find what I needed. Went to several places looking for something to be made but was quoted ridiculous prices. Finally stopped here and got exactly what I needed custom made in less than 24 hours ( I was quoted a week, and they let me borrow an ear bud holder that actually worked) when I went to pick it up and paid only 20.00, I returned the earbud holder and was told "you can keep it"!!! Great place!!!

Matthew M.

Yelp
Bought several items over the years here. Friendly staff and interesting items for sale. One of the best looking stores in Houston by far.

Bethany H.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I love both browsing and picking up small everyday items as well as gifts for our friends and family. The staff is well-versed on all their products and incredibly friendly. Their wares are nothing short of timeless, and I love that everything is hand-made / hand-selected. I'm so glad Houston has a shop like this. 10/10.
google avatar

Chandra M.

Yelp
One of the cutest spots really! Super nice gifts for your beau/dad/brother etc...but the customer service... Not there. Unless it was just me. I was actually really moved by the fact that as I walked in, there was only one other person, a male to be exact who was actually being helped by the brunette sales associate. I was already making my way around the store, and the associate never lifted her head to see me even after she was done talking to the other customer. 2 mins later, a strawberry blonde customer walked up the stairs and she was immediately greeted with "welcome, is there anything I can help you with?" By this time I've actually walked right in front of the associate, yet, I was NEVER acknowledged. In such a small store I wouldn't expect such blatant disrespect, but they are definitely lacking in the courtesy of customer equality
google avatar

Cameron Y.

Yelp
This place has a wonderful atmosphere and you can tell it was styled by a true professional. Every little vignette is captivating and tells a story. That being said, this place is a rip off. My man and I browsed at the loads of "vintage finds" aka junk and new items that were incredibly over priced. Old pocket knives or bottle openers for $80 or more, new combat boots for over $300, $45 "man" candles, over priced beef jerky and other food items, $100 leather valets, the list goes on and on.... It's just ridiculous. 19th street offers wonderful shopping and this is not on that list. If you want some vintage man accessories, go to a true antique store. Not here.

Yelp
The absolute best Beard Oil. I have tried many and I keep going back to their beard oil. It lasts literally twice as long as most beard oils because a little goes along way with this stuff, and it smells like I've been chopping wood all day.

Yelp
Manready is an amazing store with amazing customer service and super knowledgeable staff. My wife and I were on our way out of town one evening, but I had noticed a special pair of jeans that were significantly discounted in Manready the day before that caught my interest. Right before we left town I decided that I did in fact want to go back to try the jeans on. So, on our way out Friday night we stopped by the shop but we were too late--we thought. The store closes at 7:00, and we showed up at 8:00. We were peeping through the window at the rack where the jeans were the day before when one of the staff, Tim, walked out of a side door inside and came to the main door. He opened up and asked what we were looking for, and we told him about the jeans. Right then, another staff member, Des, walked up as well, and they called yet another staff member (that was working the day before) to find out if the jeans had been sold yet. Upon finding out that they were still in the store, they opened the store back up, personally took us upstairs, turned the lights back on, and let me try on the jeans. They measured me and proceeded to tell my wife and I the dos and don'ts of owning raw selvedge denim for 40 minutes. Keep in mind that this is on a Friday night, now an hour and a half after the store closes, and two of the staff are personally and proactively helping me and teaching me instead of getting on with their Friday night. I think it is the most amazing customer service I've ever experienced in a retail store. I feel bad for the other reviewers with bad experiences--I feel like you must have been unlucky, and must have interacted with different people than Tim and Des. They were so nice, helpful, patient, and accommodating. I am definitely recommending this store to others and shopping here more. Good job Manready, and thank you Des and Tim.

Yelp
I picked up one of their candles at an event and googled the brand and was shocked to learn that they had a brick and mortar store in my own backyard! I felt a little better knowing they'd only been open around 6 months but it was a sign that I needed to do some serious 19th street shopping. I'm only knocking off a star because they have a lot of cool stuff...that doesn't have price tags. That can be frustrating constantly asking someone how much things cost. Also be forewarned that the employees are definitely hipster aloof which is usually fine but if you've never been it can be a bit odd. I walked in expecting a store and saw a couch with a bunch of people sitting, someone getting their hair cut farther back, and a staircase. I stood there for a few seconds wondering if I had the right place. No one said anything to me and I heard people upstairs so I just took the plunge and walked upstairs and that's where I found all of the goodies. Might've been nice for someone to point me in that direction! The goods! They have awesome stuff. It's called "manready" but I could live in this place and I'm a lady so don't be fooled. I can't say enough about their candles--flowery "girl" scents make me light headed so I always stick to the more rustic scents and their candles are exactly that. I love the bergamot and teak. It makes your whole house smell like a woodshop--in a great way! I was also surprised to see that they have some Filson products which are awesome and not sold in nearly enough stores in Houston so that's promising. They also have a bar cart where you can make yourself a whiskey drink but I didn't notice it until I was pretty much done so I didn't partake this time. All in all it's a good experience and you can find some really unique gifts for the man--or lady in your life.
