I’d rate Mantra Aqueous Port Douglas "#good-enough-for-the-price" but, sadly, not "#I’d-book-again". The good: rates are fair by Port Douglas standards, the proximity to the Macrossan Street location makes wandering to shops, cafes, restaurants and Four Mile Beach a breeze, and the apartments are spacious and come well-equipped with spa on the balcony, full kitchens, dishwashers, washer-dryer combos and free underground parking. The trade-off is noise - lots of it. If you’re a city dweller who sleeps through traffic and usual city noise, you’ll cope, but light sleepers should steer clear, especially of the northern side rooms that backs onto the rear of Zinc restaurant. Its kitchen fan hums relentlessly until about 10 p.m., garbage trucks rattle the large commercial bins at 6 a.m. or so few times a week (yes!), and even pool cleaning started around 7 a.m. a couple of times. Also, the delivery trucks idle with engines running for ages everywhere at Port Douglas! I'm not sure what is wrong with environmental policy at Port Douglas! None of this is strictly the hotel’s fault, but it chips away at any chance of a relaxing, week-plus stay. And we stayed for two weeks :( . Rooms starting to show minor maintenance issues (our bathroom carried a faint damp smell). Finally, one small but telling extra: decent Wi-Fi hides behind the Accor membership. You can, technically, hop on a slower network without that, but if you want the "fast" tier you have to hand over your personal details and sign up. In our age of data-breach headlines, that’s hardly appealing - especially when you’re already paying for the room. The overall verdict is "reasonable value, but too noisy to return."
