I'm writing this review as Grindavik has been evacuated in advance of a possible volcanic eruption. I hope that all will be well in the region, and leave this review in honor of a very enjoyable & restful visit. I hope to be able to return.||I arrived very late at night & easily found my key in the locker prepared for my arrival. The room was beyond what I expected! Spacious, warm, minimalistic but very comfortable. It was set up like a studio apartment with a small couch and a semi-separate sitting area from the beds, and a lot of storage space. I could see staying for a week very comfortably. The bed was very comfortable & I slept soundly. The kitchenette had a few items left by others: coffee, tea, salt & sugar, soap. There were nice towels in the bathroom & some toiletries. ||I enjoyed walking around outside in the morning, looking at the fishing boats in the cove. It seemed to be an easy walk to any part of Grindavik. If I'd had more time, I would have made the 3-4 km walk to the Blue Lagoon instead of driving there! There is a trail.

Everything is done electronically at Mar - there are no staff to greet you on arrival - but fortunately things went smoothly for us. The room was quite simple and unadorned. Fine for a summer stay but in colder weather it would lack a cosy feel. It was a bit frustrating trying to get comfortable reading on the bed as the pillow was small and there were no other cushions or pillows or spare blankets. The bathroom was clean and functional (we had our own). The corridors did smell a bit odd (a bit fishy??) but this did not extend into the room.

I normally don’t write negative reviews, but I would like to helpful to whoever needs information about this guesthouse. |It is over expensive for the service offered. The room was smelly, the toilets too. The hot water in two showers was not working. The general athmospere was not pleasant. The window in the room was not closing! The owner guaranteed reimbursement but never received. Even booking.com was unable to communicate with the host. If you need a place in grindavick avoid this guesthouse.

Stayed here some years back, nice cosy place and the lady tending to the place was nice and helpful. Used google review as a platform to give support to the owners and staff of Mar Guesthouse as I Saw the news regarding Icelandic volcanic activity and realised that I’ve previously stayed in this town and particularly this guest house. Hope everyone is safe there!

A top notch property! Everything about this place is first class. On site laundry is the best. We had a studio which was amazing. Close to blue lagoon if you’re going there, also close to volcano which is erupting. There are several restaurants nearby.

We stayed at Mar the night before we flew out from KEF. We also visited Blue Lagoon that day. The location was great for both of these things, easy drive. The room was good sized and clean. The shades could have been a little darker but we were so tired it was no big deal.

First arrived on a Thursday morning. Hotel looked nice. Room looked new and smelled good. It was a nice day out, the doors on both ends of the main hallway were open. Wonderful. As more people started checking in I noticed the smell became more apparent - poop. The bathrooms don't have any real ventilation aside from venting out into the hallway. If you're staying in a "middle" room near the 4 bathrooms this is what you are going to smell when you're here. The doors to each room all slam shut, unlike the last hostel I was at where although it was run down the doors all shut quiet as a whisper. I guess there's give and take to each place but I'd rather stay in a run down place that doesnt smell like poop and that doesnt wake me up when ever someone leaves or enters their room. Also the wifi is slow (5mb down hard cap) and the TV doesnt work, not a big deal with the TV but why have it if the channels are just non stop pixelation. They did have nice shampoo/conditioner/lotion. Worth the money? Yes. Would I stay here again? Poop no. In general, avoid Grindavik, not much is happening here. Stay in Reykjavik or Reykjanesbær.

The room is very spacious. There was 2 single beds and the cost was €274.40 for 2 nights. There is a sofa area, hob, oven, so you can do your own cooking. I would recommend here if you want to stay in Grindavik
