Mar Hall Golf & Spa Resort (Bishopton, UK) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"It’s a rare golf resort, even in Scotland, that displays the sort of old-world elegance you’ll find at Mar Hall Golf & Spa Resort, a spectacular 19th-century Neo-Gothic house (and 240-acre estate) on the banks of the Clyde, just a few minutes’ drive from Glasgow. Accommodations range from classic rooms and suites to private lodges that sleep up to 10; attractions include multiple high-end restaurants as well as an expansive spa and the 18-hole Earl of Mar championship course." - Tablet Hotels

This hotel has been recently renovated and is really modern and nicely done, using Scottish interiors by Timrous Beasties. The hotel and surrounds are quite stunning but the staff are the real heroes. Steeped in history, the F&B asst manager graciously spent time with us and talking us through the area and hotels history which is honestly fascinating. The Dining Room is beautiful and the food at a very high standard. I believe they are renovating Il Posto the Italian stand alone restaurant which does sit oddly against the main hotel - and the food is good but not great. I’m sure when done that will also be of the standard in the hotel. The rooms are pretty warm in summer too but this won’t be a huge problem in Scotland!

I took my boyfriend for an overnight stay at Mar Hall for his Birthday last week. As soon as we entered Mar Hall I knew it was a great choice. The hotel is beautiful, every detail has been thought of and everything is prisitne. We stayed in the Garden Suite, and it didn't disappoint, the suite was very spacious, we had the perfect view of the garden and the bed was so comfortable I struggled to get up in the morning. There's a lovely pool area with Sauna and steam room and the gym is one of the best I've used in a hotel, it had everything we needed and more. I particularly loved playing ping pong in the garden in the morning after a delicious breakfast. All the staff, especially Lee and Colin were very welcoming and helpful. I will be planning my next visit very soon.

Just on our way home from an exceptional meal at The Dining Room at Mar Hall. We started off with a delicious glass of fizz while perusing the menu. |The crab and spicy raw beef starters were lovely. The spicy beef wad served at the table so you can tailor the heat to your liking which is a great help. |The mains of confit duck, sirloin steak and lamb were all perfectly cooked and all plates were left clean. |With room left for dessert, two tipsy lairds, (another dish served at the table)the tart tatin and chocolate souffie tart were all thoroughly enjoyed. |All the staff to a person who looked after us were professional and friendly. |Even a fire alarm evacuation didn’t spoil the evening!! |Special thanks to Daniel for arranging things for us as we were spending an anniversary voucher. |Thanks to all for a fantastic evening!

We’ve always had a great stay everytime we’ve been at Mar Hall and the refurb is fantastic. We always stay for 3 nights and what I can’t understand is the limited vegetarian option in the restaurant (1 option) even after the upgrade of the place. So for 3 nights as a vegetarian you need to have the same meal. Usually some type of gnocchi or risotto. We have in the past requested mac and cheese which the chef made for us but it’s hardly 5 star dining. The vegan breakfast was disappointing too, very dry. Chef needs to come up with some different options especially in this day and age. We did eat at il posto one night just to have another option which was just ok. |I’d also like to see some sort of banister for the entrance area as if you’re unsteady on your feet there is nothing to hold onto as you are descending. Also on the stairs leading to the rear garden area some sort of support would be good there, even for able bodied guests.

The recent renovation at Mar Hall has been carried out with great care and taste. The public areas, rooms, and suites now feel fresh, elegant, and comfortable. A particular highlight is the beautifully maintained garden and inner courtyard, where guests can relax outdoors in a peaceful atmosphere — a real asset in good weather. However, parts of the property are still under renovation, which slightly detracts from the overall experience. The spa is well-equipped and pleasant, but the presence of many external gym members diminishes the sense of exclusivity typically expected at a resort of this category. Service across the property is warm and attentive. A special mention goes to Alan at the concierge desk — his dedication and professionalism stand out and significantly enhance the guest experience. That said, service at the bar and restaurant is inconsistent. While the staff are well-meaning, many lack basic training — difficulties carrying multiple plates or properly presenting food were not uncommon. Moreover, food quality varied dramatically: a dish served perfectly one evening could be poorly prepared the next, which was disappointing and suggests a lack of consistency in the kitchen. Breakfast is not on par with expectations. The buffet is small, lacks healthy options, and offers little variety. The à la carte menu is limited and inflexible. A simple request for an omelette — despite not being on the menu — was bluntly rejected with, “We don’t do omelettes here.” This level of rigidity is highly unusual in a hotel of this standard. Overall, I was noticeable that management wasn’t present throughout our stay. This would probably be needed in order to elevate service and food quality to the next and actually needed level. In summary: Mar Hall has the foundation of a truly great hotel — thanks to its stunning setting, successful renovation, and a few standout team members. However, it still needs improvements in staff training and culinary consistency to fully meet luxury expectations.

We used to visit Mar Hall often, but in recent years felt that there was an overall decline. On the basis of new owners, we were excited to visit once again and we were not left disappointed. From the minute we walked into the hotel, we were met by engaging reception team members who all offered a lovely welcome. The hotel has the perfect blend of team members who have been there for a long time with some new members who have recently joined - special mention to the gentleman who served us in the Slaite bar - his passion for Mar Hall was impressive. We dined at in the 'Dining Room' and were met with exceptional service from Zac...what a fine young man and a real asset to the team. Our meal was beautiful, as were the views from the restaurant across the River Clyde. We had breakfast in our room, but also had a lovely chat with Dayna from the breakfast room. The new investment into the hotel is clear to see, stunning decor and we loved the interior design of our room and bathroom. The bedroom was spotlessly clean. There is a fresh new vibe about the hotel and from what we hear much more to come to make it even better.....highly recommend giving it a try! We will be back.

We organised a 2 day stay at Mar Hall Golf and Spa Resort at the beginning of June 2025. This was a reunion for Glasgow medical school graduates. It included a drinks reception followed by a buffet supper and ceilidh in the marquee. |The hotel has undergone extensive refurbishment and does now look spectacular. Food was good and the dining room has a fantastic view over the Clyde estuary. A special mention goes to Samantha Chapuis, Wedding and Events Manager, who answered all our queries quickly and whose attention to detail ensured this was a very successful, and enjoyable, event.

Hotel is just finishing multi million £ refurb, so still settling in.|Very nice, friendly helpful staff. Rooms still smell of new paint and new carpets so had to turn radiator heating down to reduce it. Room very nice but so... lacking in drawer space even for stays of a night or two. No way to get fresh air into room as windows sealed (painted?) shut as most of the corridor windows seemed to be. OTOH this could be a security feature as we were at ground level (and also deepest & furthest from reception - 4 minutes walk from breakfast!). Didn't find the water in the room (in the fridge!) until the day we left. Never got around to asking for a Do Not Disturb sign...|Bathroom was cold, with no form of heating for drying towels (for next use) or clothes (after West of Scotland weather). Nowhere to hang towels after use except one small peg on door, so not too eco-friendly on towel reuse - presume they were replaced fresh? Handle of door to bathroom too near to door jamb to turn easily without bashing fingers.|Went to make a cup of tea and had to tip the selection of teabags etc, out of the cups to use them. Suggest a small container for these. No milk supplied so black tea.|Eating facilities book up quickly. Managed to try all three in the end. Il Posto has short Italian menu. Good but mains are large helpings suitable for greedy golfers. Could be very noisy if busy as all surfaces are hard and reflective of noise! Restaurant good but costly. Gallery eating ok, but the offer of a little dessert would have gone down well. Short ok wine list in all three locations.||Breakfast good but some dishes slow to arrive such as chocolate & hazelnut porridge. Sunday breakfast vg. Not so slick Monday.|Although there's a spa and billiard room the games room was still being readied. Apart from the Gallery where most of the tables were set for meals or the bar area could not find anywhere quiet just to sit and read or knit, etc.
