The recent renovation at Mar Hall has been carried out with great care and taste. The public areas, rooms, and suites now feel fresh, elegant, and comfortable. A particular highlight is the beautifully maintained garden and inner courtyard, where guests can relax outdoors in a peaceful atmosphere — a real asset in good weather. However, parts of the property are still under renovation, which slightly detracts from the overall experience.
The spa is well-equipped and pleasant, but the presence of many external gym members diminishes the sense of exclusivity typically expected at a resort of this category.
Service across the property is warm and attentive. A special mention goes to Alan at the concierge desk — his dedication and professionalism stand out and significantly enhance the guest experience.
That said, service at the bar and restaurant is inconsistent. While the staff are well-meaning, many lack basic training — difficulties carrying multiple plates or properly presenting food were not uncommon. Moreover, food quality varied dramatically: a dish served perfectly one evening could be poorly prepared the next, which was disappointing and suggests a lack of consistency in the kitchen.
Breakfast is not on par with expectations. The buffet is small, lacks healthy options, and offers little variety. The à la carte menu is limited and inflexible. A simple request for an omelette — despite not being on the menu — was bluntly rejected with, “We don’t do omelettes here.” This level of rigidity is highly unusual in a hotel of this standard.
Overall, I was noticeable that management wasn’t present throughout our stay. This would probably be needed in order to elevate service and food quality to the next and actually needed level.
In summary: Mar Hall has the foundation of a truly great hotel — thanks to its stunning setting, successful renovation, and a few standout team members. However, it still needs improvements in staff training and culinary consistency to fully meet luxury expectations.
