Stunning Greek orthodox desert monetary. In a dramatic canyon. Entrance for men only when the monks are in the mood. No women allowed inside. No facilities. Interesting architecture and history. Stunning monastery located in a beautiful hidden place at Judaean Desert. is a Greek Orthodox monastery overlooking the Kidron Valley at a point halfway between the Old City of Jerusalem and the Dead Sea. I couldn't believe this place existed. It is hidden in a canyon and easily accessible from Bethlehem. Thank you my friend for sharing this photos🙏🙏

Beautiful off-road trip to get there, through jebel montar from East Jerusalem. The view is amazing from the western cliff, other side of the below laying wadi. The road back can easily be done through the asphalt and is an easy return

The monastery is pretty cool but the stream that dug the canyon it's built in is covered in plastic garbage down its entire length and smells like soap. It was my first time seeing something like this and that left a much bigger impression.

Amazing orthodox monastery in the middle of the Judean Desert. Inside, you feel like the first monks a thousand years ago. Women are forbidden to enter, but they can walk around and enjoy fantastic views of the monastery.

It is the most ancient acting monastery on the Earth, which was founded in the Vth century and has the fundamental meaning for the Orthodox Church. Located in the Kidron valley, not far from Bethlehem. By the way, entrance for women strictly prohibited since site's foundation. Must visit place for everyone!

An absolutely incredible place! A definite must-see in the West Bank. Though it is difficult/impossible to reach with public transport, you can arrange a taxi in Bethlehem that will drive you out, wait a few hours for you there, and then bring you back. There are stunning hiking trails that go all around the valley, each with a more beautiful view of the landscape around. The monastery itself is closed off for women. Make sure to spend as much time possible exploring all the different trails!

The Mar Saba Monastery is a must to visit, especially for Orthodox Christians. Prior to the visit, in the early morning, I was woken up by a old man chanting in an old language in the room. I told my roommate of my weird experience. I was not frightened as it was very peaceful. When I went to Mar Saba, they have the body relic of their founder, Saint Sabbas the Sanctified (439–532), a Cappadocian-Syrian monk, priest and saint. I discovered that Sabbas means old man. Saint Sabbas died when he was 94 years old! Were I visited by him? Mar Saba is known for many miracles, including water that miraculously flow from the wall for more than 1,500 years.
