Marataba Luxury Lodges

"How did it strike you on arrival?Once you walk along the wooden “moat” and through the lodge’s double-height entrance, you’ll no doubt be fixated on the panorama of the red-hued Waterberg mountains, with the slopes seemingly set ablaze during sunset. Nice. What’s the crowd like? There’s no typical guest as the clientele on any given day range from honeymooners to multi-generational families, safari first-timers to game lodge veterans. Marataba is based in Marakele National Park’s private 23,000-hectare concession, which it only shares with one sister lodge, so perhaps the guests’ common denominator is a preference for exclusivity. The good stuff: Tell us about your room. The lodge hosts 15 canvas-and-stone Tented Suites, each kitted in rich fabrics and niceties such as a complimentary minibar, air conditioning, a roll top bath and an indoor and outdoor shower. Like the communal areas, the tent’s contemporary yet earthy look is a refreshing departure from the overdone ‘Out of Africa’ trope seen in other safari accommodations. If you’re lucky, you might be able to view wildlife activity right in front of your wraparound private deck—booking a suite closer to the river increases this likelihood. How about the little things, like mini bar, or shower goodies. Any of that worth a mention?Complimentary Wi-Fi is available in the main lodge. Room service and food: Worth it?All meals for Marataba guests are taken care of, as are snacks and drinks such as Gin & Tonic during game drives. Bush dinners illuminated by numerous fire pits are a special treat. Anything stand out about other services and features?Options to relax outside of your tent include a communal pool with loungers, hammocks amongst the trees and a library with plush brown leather sofas; alternatively, book an in-room spa treatment on your deck and zone out to sounds of the birds and the breeze. For those wanting alternatives for Big Five excursions beyond vehicle drives, Marataba offers a walking safari and a must-do water safari, where guests navigate the Matlabas River in search of hippos, lions and much more while on the lodge’s pontoon, Miss Mara. Bottom line: Why are we staying here?Far from roughing it, Marataba’s sleek tented suites, ace safari guides and first-rate amenities amongst an otherworldly landscape makes for one of South Africa’s finest lodges." - Travis Levius

We went on our honeymoon for 5 nights at the mountain lodge and we could not fault anything about the trip. The location of the lodge and the view from the lodge are spectacular and seeing wildlife with the backdrop of the mountains is a unique experience. The lodge itself is beautifully finished and the staff at the lodge were all incredibly accommodating. The food was delicious and the range of options was good. ||In terms of the animals we saw, we were lucky enough to see the big 5 in the first two days. We had some special encounters with cheetah cubs, a herd of elephants blocking our way to the lodge and a failed hunt by some lionesses. We also saw a baby rhino which was incredible. We even encountered 4 lion cubs and their mother on the way out of the park when we were leaving on our last morning! In every instance, we encountered the wildlife with just our vehicle (which had only 6 people plus our guide) or with one other vehicle, which definitely added to the experience. Our guide Tim was fantastic - he was super knowledgeable and made our trip really special. He also made some great gin and tonics at sundown from the back of the jeep!||The lodge also arranged for a bottle of sparkling wine and decorated our room for our final night of our honeymoon which was a great surprise. ||Couldn’t recommend the lodge any more!

We loved our 4 nights at Marataba Mountain Lodge (take our advice and stay no less than 3 nights)! The lodge is small and intimate with only 5 rooms. The views from the room and the main areas is simply spectacular! The rooms are smartly designed and with very comfortable beds and great rain shower, all with that gorgeous view. Although there was airconditioning, we did not use it but simply opened the windows at night (with netting to keep the bugs outside) and slept with the natural breeze and the sound of the river as a lullaby in the background. The people working here are all equally nice and hospitable. Special thanks to Jennifer and Poloko. The rockstar cook Prudence deserves a special mention: WOW! Amazing what she cooked for lunch and dinner and then also high quality snacks at tea time and the best of muffins in the morning. Lovely to get a printed menu with varying lunch and dinner options each day, also for me (as a vegetarian with special requirements) many delicious options all cooked to perfection. A big thanks also to our guide William. It was a pure delight to cruise the reserve with him. We saw great lion interactions, buffalo, I cannot count the amount of white rhino’s we saw (including 4 crossing the river), elephants, lots of antelope and finally also quite some giraffes. And all against the gorgeous backdrop of the Waterberg mountains. The water experience on the Miss Mara is utterly relaxing and pure eye candy and great to see some hippos and even a crocodile. We will be back for sure (we could easily stay a week!) and cannot recommend this lodge highly enough.

We’ve just completed a wonderful two night stay at Mountain Lodge. We would like the thank all the staff, Jennifer and William, our guide, for making us most welcome. The rooms were incredible, food gourmet like, and the friendliness quite lovely!|The highlight, however, must be the game drives, which thanks to our guide, William, were really, really exhilarating. Sadly we didn’t see the big 5, as the leopard proved elusive. We did however, get to see a family of cheetahs and were no more than 8 metres from a family of lions!|We were sad on leaving that we hadn’t seen an elephant, although on the last drive, William searched valiantly …….. but lo and behold, on leaving the reserve, one miraculously appeared, making our holiday!|Please pass this information on to William, as I’m sure he will be as pleased as we were elated.|Regards|Marg and Roger

This was our second visit to the mountain lodge. We chose to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary here. Jen was our lodge manager again which delighted us as we had been taken such good care of during the first time we stayed. This time was also superb, excellent food, accommodation, guides and overall an incredible experience. We hope to return again one day.

For this one you need to be physically fit as the name says mountain lodge , it is on the mountain. On the bright side one can eat as much as they want knowing they are definitely going to burn all the calories 😝 It’s on the Waterberg mountains so the view are to die for.

From the moment we arrived at Marataba Mountain Lodge, it felt like stepping into a dream - this lodge perfectly combines luxury and nature. Every detail, from the warm welcome to the breathtaking views, made it an unforgettable experience. ||The accommodations were stunning—luxurious, yet thoughtfully designed to harmonize with the surrounding wilderness. Lodges with almost 360 windows offered panoramic views of the amazing landscape, making even a moment of rest feel like a continuation of the adventure. The meals were excellent with every dish being different each day, using local ingredients and crafted with care.||The highlight, of course, was the safari experience. Our guide, Sinhle, was nothing short of incredible. His passion for the wildlife, deep knowledge and infectious enthusiasm elevated every game drive. Sinhle had an incredible ability to spot animals hidden in plain sight—his eagle eyes helped us witness cubs reuniting with its parents, and even a rare sighting of a leopard catching a fish.||From start to finish, Marataba Mountain Lodge exceeded every expectation. The combination of luxury, pristine wilderness, and outstanding service—particularly from guides like Sinhle, our host & butler made our honeymoon into a once-in-a-lifetime experience. If you're looking for a safari that blends adventure, tranquility, and exceptional hospitality, this is the place to go. We can't wait to return!

My husband and I celebrated a milestone birthday at Marataba in October. I cannot say enough about how wonderful this place is. Our field guide, Marnus, was very friendly and knowledgeable and taught us a lot about the animals and property. He was also very patient in answering all of my questions! The property and surrounding mountains are gorgeous. The food was absolutely delicious - I don’t know how they manage to prepare so many fresh, varied, and tasty meals to order in such a remote spot every day, multiple times a day. Honestly, we ate twice as much at Marataba as we normally do. Our villa was stunning, spacious, and comfortable. The large complimentary “mini” bar was a nice touch but we barely used it. We also spent one night at the treehouse and it was one of my favorite travel experiences ever. The stargazing from the treehouse was phenomenal. ||And the animals. Oh the animals. We saw the big five multiple times over (we even saw the elusive black rhino). We also saw baby cheetahs, hippos, warthogs, bush pigs, brown hyena, giraffe, baboons, zebra - too many to mention, really. The animals seemed healthy and blissfully unperturbed by us. We were also lucky to have temperate, sunny weather. ||Perhaps my favorite thing about Marataba is how remote and private it is. We usually only had one other couple on our game drives and we could drive for hours without seeing another vehicle. No theme-park vibe or crowds here. I really appreciate that there are only a couple dozen guest suites at Marataba spread between the mountain lodge and safari lodge. We are already talking about going back to Marataba. ||My only practical advice would be to bring layers, even if it will be warm while you are on safari. It is chillier than you think it will be on the morning drives, especially when the open-air (but covered, btw) Land Cruiser gets moving. Also, for anyone debating between the mountain lodge and safari lodge, the mountain lodge is an approx. 30 minute drive past the safari lodge, and most roads through the property start from the safari lodge. So if you stay at the mountain lodge, around an hour of each game drive is taken up driving to and from the safari lodge. That was not a problem in our opinion because we saw lots of animals on that stretch of road. For us, the small size, no kids policy, and elevated location of the mountain lodge were worth it.
