My husband and I celebrated a milestone birthday at Marataba in October. I cannot say enough about how wonderful this place is. Our field guide, Marnus, was very friendly and knowledgeable and taught us a lot about the animals and property. He was also very patient in answering all of my questions! The property and surrounding mountains are gorgeous. The food was absolutely delicious - I don’t know how they manage to prepare so many fresh, varied, and tasty meals to order in such a remote spot every day, multiple times a day. Honestly, we ate twice as much at Marataba as we normally do. Our villa was stunning, spacious, and comfortable. The large complimentary “mini” bar was a nice touch but we barely used it. We also spent one night at the treehouse and it was one of my favorite travel experiences ever. The stargazing from the treehouse was phenomenal. ||And the animals. Oh the animals. We saw the big five multiple times over (we even saw the elusive black rhino). We also saw baby cheetahs, hippos, warthogs, bush pigs, brown hyena, giraffe, baboons, zebra - too many to mention, really. The animals seemed healthy and blissfully unperturbed by us. We were also lucky to have temperate, sunny weather. ||Perhaps my favorite thing about Marataba is how remote and private it is. We usually only had one other couple on our game drives and we could drive for hours without seeing another vehicle. No theme-park vibe or crowds here. I really appreciate that there are only a couple dozen guest suites at Marataba spread between the mountain lodge and safari lodge. We are already talking about going back to Marataba. ||My only practical advice would be to bring layers, even if it will be warm while you are on safari. It is chillier than you think it will be on the morning drives, especially when the open-air (but covered, btw) Land Cruiser gets moving. Also, for anyone debating between the mountain lodge and safari lodge, the mountain lodge is an approx. 30 minute drive past the safari lodge, and most roads through the property start from the safari lodge. So if you stay at the mountain lodge, around an hour of each game drive is taken up driving to and from the safari lodge. That was not a problem in our opinion because we saw lots of animals on that stretch of road. For us, the small size, no kids policy, and elevated location of the mountain lodge were worth it.
