18 of the Best Spots in Patagonia

"I took a boat through the Marble Caves on General Carrera Lake—carved by clear blue water into swirling yellow, white, and gray formations—and found some caverns large enough to boat through; the one-hour tour costs about 10,000 CLP per person and is the reason Puerto Río Tranquilo is famous." - Matthew Kepnes

I thought the marble caves would be quite touristy and commercial, but I was happily mistaken! It is indeed incredible. I highly recommend doing it with a kayak, as you can get closer and do it more slowly. It is not so tiring and the agencies are super helpful. Seek a tour in Rio Tranquilo.

We did the kayaking tour through the caves and it was incredible! We got to see the sunrise from the mountains and enjoy our morning on the water. Be careful because it gets really windy on the lake and then all the powerboats come to show the tourists the caves. I recommend using a kayak angency and going in the morning before the weather gets really bad.

Beautiful formations and amazing water color to add to the beauty. My wife and I took a two hour boat tour (we paid $30 each) our tour went to both sets of marble caves, the one by Puerto Tranquillo and the other set across the lake by Puerto Sanchez. Both were amazing and I'd definitely recommend the longer tour that covers both sets of caves. The tours are very well organized and the companies appear to work together to fill the next departing boat. Tours run regularly all day long so you won't have to wait long to get on a boat.

Beautiful caves and lake! We took a private tour at 6am so we got to see some amazing sunrise as well! Normal tour would start from 8am till 8pm. Water is calmer the earlier you go.

Somewhat touristy, but still a must-do from Rio Tranquilo. There are lots of agencies at the port hawking their tours - it’s CLP$20000 for the “simple” tour to the caves, chapel, and tunnel, and 30000 for the “full” tour (which is about an hour longer and goes across the lake). The tours seem to be available from 7am - 6pm, but strong winds can close the port. It may be better to visit at sunrise - I did an evening tour and while still pretty, the sun isn’t directly hitting the water. And even though it was a warm day, it was still cool and windy on the boat over. We did see a condor nesting on the cliff face, so keep your eyes peeled!

The Marble Caves is one of the best-hidden gems in Chile’s Patagonia region. If you are planning a trip down the scenic Careterra Highway , the Marble Caves is a must! These beautiful caves are located in the middle of General Carrera Lake and can be only accessed by boat or kayak. 📍Patagonia, Chile

Well worth the trip. It is windy so dress accordingly.
