I took the boys out for a vacation treat - just to get out and get a little crazy. My youngest wanted ice cream, and we're close to Pier Park, so Marble Slab seemed like the place to go. We expected it to be an overpriced concoction.
My son had the "Chocolate 2 the Xtreme" shake. It was a visual explosion. Anything they could find in the store with chocolate was put in this bomb. A Kit Kat bar, a chocolate waver, a chunk of a Crunch bar, etc. He'd admit, it was more visual than tasty. Once he picked out the candy and ate it, it left behind a mediocre chocolate shake with a ton of whipped cream on top. Pound for pound, it wasn't worth it. For the visual shock, it was.
I had the Strawberry Shortcake sundae - made with "birthday cake" ice cream. It was just okay. My "bar" is set high with Cold Stone Creamery, and this fell short. I've been dieting, so my sugar intake has been low, making everything taste more sweet - this didn't have the same powerful taste impact other things have had. The Strawberries were frozen, and the syrup tasted like that fake strawberry syrup you can get at any grocery store. Of course, I ate it... but I had buyer's remorse afterwards.
If you're looking for a cold treat while bumming around Pier Park, this place will do, but - in my opinion - it looks better than it tastes. The lines are long, and it can feel like chaos in there. These places are vacation staples, so they'll keep slingin' treats. I'd rather hit a smaller, locally-owned place and get a more localized experience.
