On the Grid : Marché Lalime

"A no-fuss lunch spot for locals who appreciate house-made smoked meats and pulled pork. The fridges are stocked with remarkable Quebec microbrews. Our office parties wouldn't be the same without Lalime in close proximity." - Dynamo

We love this type of place. Is it a Dépanneur that serves large, satisfying, delicious  sandwhiches, for a very reasonable price? Or is it a sandwich place that sells convenient items? Sandwhiches reminiscent of the type of homemade creation you'd make when struck by insatiable hunger. So many options to chose from too! It's no wonder they have been in that area for almost 65 years. On top of this they also have a nice collection of microbrews and some other meals like tourtière, soups and salads.

If you are looking for a no fuss, inexpensive sandwich which actually tastes pretty good… this is a good place to try. However, I never saw the employees wash their hands after using the cash register or returning to the kitchen from the walk in from the walk in fridge. Generally I would have cancelled my order but I ate the food anyway and paid the price around 0230 where I had to commune with the porcelain god. So yes, the food tastes good however, poor sanitation practices likely lead to food contamination.

I used to work nearby and was in the habit of grabbing breakfast, or lunch or dinner from these folks. Over a period of 10 years, I have never been disappointed, far from it. Everyone that I have ever interacted there was a joy to deal with. The made to order food was prepared quickly and very well (I still miss the "Pat Matin"). The ready to eat sandwiches are to die for, especially the Portuguese chicken one, IMHO. When the came for me to move on professionally, I was a bit sad for many reasons, obviously, but you better believe that missing out on interacting with the lovely folks at Lalime and on savouring their excellent products was one of the more significant ones. In the few years that have since gone by, I have visited a few times and can confirm that nothing has changed (my last visit was a few months ago). Best wishes to everyone there! P.S. I still think that "Chez Lalime, Lalimentation on connaît ça!" would be a cool slogan. :)

Google
Fantastic selection of small ready meals and sandwiches, at unbeatable prices (all the while feeling like quality homemade food) and made fresh! Pro tip: order at the counter to avoid plastic wrapping ;) Oh and they have pastries, pies, snacks and a range of craft beer

Great neighborhood joint keeping starving artists and old time regulars fed with their famous breakfast sandwiches. Fantastic beer selection as well!

This place makes the best sandwich I've ever had in my entire life! For the price, their food is a given. The ingredients are so fresh and tasty. Definitely coming back!!!

Google
Very slow service, out of the 4 people working only 1 was preparing orders. The others were cooking and packaging food, not washing their hands, touching everything from the cash to the fridges. I came in for the club matin and noticed everything is heated in the microwave. The egg was COOKED in the microwave, in a dirty plastic container with a dried out piece of bacon on top. Gross preparation, I'm surprised I ate it. 2 stars because it was cheap

Fantastic real home made food with affordable prices. I’m very difficult with my food, but this family business is so much like eating at home. It’s the only place I will without a doubt enjoy their food. Clean, health, and fresh. Aside from all , the family business is so beautiful to see all of them come together and support one another and the loyalty and dedication is so beautiful to see. I give their food, service, quality, welcome a big fat 5 STAR . It’s the best dep, I’ve ever known. Trust it and please try their meat pie and my favourite is the seafood pie. Everything they have is to try …..

Yelp
This place has been here since 1959, is currently run by the daughter of the original owner, and her Mum makes all the tourtierres. I grabbed the beef and pork tourtierre last night, it cost $6 and fed us both for dinner. Oh, and it was delicious. Perfect buttery brown crust, almost croissant-like, and incredibly savoury mouthwatering filling. The front window of this little dep used to be crowded with signs, but they've removed the clutter and seem to really be focusing more on the amazing homemade eats, while still meeting the convenience store needs of the area. They also do local bike delivery - not just of food but you can get them to bring you dep items as well - even wine delivery to the local BYO restaurants!

Yelp
Funky dressed up little depanneur that caught the corner of my eye when I was wandering around one of my favourite new streets Beaubien E. One the inside is a mishmash of half dep and half NY style Deli. They have a fantastic selection of toutieres sandwiches and other fantastic lunch/snack or dinner (or lazy person) quality meals. Their tourtières looked so divine. I must return for one. My purchase here was for a four pack of Beau's all natural beer. I asked the store clerk of he like Beau's and he gave a funny face like someone eating a raw lemon. He said "it doesn't really taste like anything man"! I disagree! However that is why there is beer for all kinds. Some people like (or love) Molson Export. I would not even sip an Export it if I was walking through the desert and this was the only source of refreshment. I'd rather die a slow and painful death than drink a Molson Export. For this man selling my Beau's he didn't appear to be amused about my purchase. Pure comedy. If all Deps transformed into funky Deli Deps selling beer and other goods we would be habitants of a Utopian kind of heaven!

Yelp
Good quality for the low cost. Great place to grab a snack. I just wish there was more "filler food" (like rice) in their prepared meals.
