The 21 Best Cafés in Paris

"A corner shop in a lovely stretch of the hilly neighborhood between the Buttes Chaumont park and Belleville, this months-old specialty hot spot is faintly Scandi-inspired both in decor (blonde wood tables and stools, exposed stone walls, and handmade ceramic dishware by Charline Robache) and in the cup. It's cozy, friendly, and full of neighborhood locals on any given day. Expect beautifully-executed coffees, from flat whites to pour overs, and a menu that's a bit more sophisticated than the average coffee shop—the lunch selection is seasonal and has included latkes served with chive crème fraîche and a stracciatella tartine with honey-roasted carrots in a chimichurri sauce." - Lindsey Tramuta

Mardi – Café Review | Condé Nast Traveler

"What were your first impressions when you arrived?   A corner shop in a lovely stretch of the hilly neighborhood between the Buttes Chaumont park and Belleville, this months-old specialty hot spot is faintly Scandi-inspired both in decor (blonde wood tables and stools, exposed stone walls, and handmade ceramic dishware by Charline Robache) and in the cup. It's cozy, friendly, and full of neighborhood locals on any given day. What’s the crowd like?   This is clearly a hangout for young parents (and their four-legged friends) and bohemians who live in and around Belleville—most mornings, you'll find the stroller contingent jostling for space before (or just after the school run. Then, the afternoon gives way to the freelancer-artist crowd who linger for hours. What should we be drinking?   Expect beautifully-executed coffees, from flat whites to pour overs, using beans from the Danish roaster April. Main event: the food. Give us the lowdown—especially what not to miss.   Both in terms of savory and sweet, the menu here is a bit more sophisticated than the average coffee shop. Breakfast might include granola and yogurt or a soft boiled egg served with slices of Comté cheese, whipped butter, and buckwheat bread. The lunch selection is seasonal and varies regularly but has included latkes served with chive crème fraîche, a beetroot and green apple compôte alongside a parsnip and cauliflower soup or a stracciatella tartine with honey-roasted carrots in a chimichurri sauce served with a radicchio salad. Sweets range from scones and cookies to cannelé and cinnamon rolls. And how did the front-of-house folks treat you?   Cordial and efficient, they navigate busy waves very well. What’s the real-real on why we’re coming here?   Casual get-togethers with friends, informal meetings, family breakfasts, and self-care time with a book." - Lindsey Tramuta

Honestly, sometimes when you get used to a great coffee shop, you forget to show your gratitude! As Bronwen Clewley mentioned, the coffee here is truly delicious. The matcha is fantastic—especially for Paris! It’s flavorful and never disappoints, whereas in other places it often tastes bland and flat. The staff is amazing — they’re always smiling and friendly, even though working in a busy coffee shop can be tough. Yet they consistently deliver perfect coffee, quickly and with such care. They even recognize you, even if you don’t come often, which is so sweet considering how many people they see every day. When I used to live in London, every time I came to Paris this coffee shop was my go-to place! So many people come from everywhere to enjoy their coffee, the ambiance, and the food — especially during Fashion Week. I’ve met so many Londoners here that I first met back in London — that’s how good this place is! Now that I live in Paris, I still come here all the time. Honestly, it’s the best coffee shop in the city. I really want to emphasize how warm and welcoming the staff is. In many trendy coffee shops, the atmosphere can feel cold or even a bit rude — but not here. This place feels genuinely friendly and inviting. To be totally honest, I’ve tried their lunch &I can tell you it’s so good, their cookies and scones are absolutely delicious. Oh, and they even have a lovely dog — it’s such a cozy, homey place. You can bring your own dog too, and they’ll happily play with others. It’s adorable! You’ll meet all kinds of people here — from art, fashion, and local Parisians who just love the vibe. Everyone is welcome. I completely understand the no-laptop policy. A lot of people would sit for hours with just one espresso, which isn’t great for business. Instead, they’ve created a laptop-free environment that encourages people to connect, laugh, and share good moments together — and I love that. I just want to say thank you, Mardi, for creating such a lovely and joyful place. Shout out to Mardi and their staff, See you soon! ❤️

Nice and friendly cafe. Very good coffee. Hot chocolate less to our taste. The scone wasn't fresh from the oven, but we enjoyed it very much.

I heard about this place about my friends working in fashion week! And everything about it is on point! From the coffee smell you can feel from the top of the street, sipping the delicious coffee with a quick bite was everything was I looking for a sunny day in Paris. Minimalist, good music and smiley people :) The hood is hip. I am definitely coming back to try other items ! Love the community behind the coffee shop! Je recommende !

Just want to address some of the negative reviews across the board, especially in regards to staff, price, laptop allowance, quality and coffee taste. First of all, the staff at Mardi works extremely hard and I've never experienced a more well-oiled machine in service when it comes to process and timing. 90% of customers do not tip (not that it's expected, just notable when you are asking for 'more smiling' while they're hustling to produce 300 orders on a 36º July day). I'm frequently in cafés that struggle with a queue and think back to Mardi and how efficiently a busy Saturday is always handled. However you think you are entitled to request your workers' moods, be assured you will get your coffee in half the time as any bistro and all food and drinks delivered with the utmost care towards quality and hygiene. Also they are nice! Just be nice too and you'll be surprised how it works!! The 'no laptop' signs are posted everywhere. A symbol on the front door and window, 'no laptops please' written in English on the wall menu, written again in French on the paper menus, and posted on small cards at the cash register. It's not exclusionary, it's just a busy place that needs to free up the tables for everyone to enjoy their coffee and baked goods. The prices, to be clear, are equivalent to any specialty coffee shop OR local cafe/bistro, with exception to a €1.50 Café Richard espresso available at most restaurants (if you're drinking this you know what you're paying one euro for, come on). A random inexpensive café will offer a café crème for €5, same as Mardi's milk-based drinks, made with 4x cheaper ingredients. I don't understand the comparison with prices when at Mardi you pay the exact same for a higher quality and value product. Finally, the food is an absolute beacon and a bargain. The chefs are highly skilled and begin tirelessly producing everything by hand every morning, creating a different daily cake as well as international flavours not found in any boulangerie. As I've learned, finding Swedish kanelbullar, British Victoria sponge, American icebox cake, Easter semla buns, Japanese tayaki and a hojicha-flavoured Basque cheesecake in one place, is unusual and extremely special. Love you guys, clients please learn to think critically and be decent! xo

They don’t have much choice of breakfast, however the sandwich is so tasty, fresh and crunchy along with a flat white! Deserves 5 star ⭐

@mardicafeparis : superb spot for some delicious coffee and brunch. Thanks for the recommendation @europeancoffeetrip The cafe is very airy and well lit from the huge street facing windows on two sides. People are passionate and friendly. Coffee selection is excellent and staff help you with recommendations from quality roasters. You can get brews from espresso based drinks to batch brew and filter coffee of your choice method. Food is also served with a lot of thought put into it. The ingredients are super fresh and top notch and the resultant dishes are excellent!

A delightful little gem. The coffee is of exceptional quality, the staff truly kind and smiling, and «Le dessert du jour» (a cake reminiscent of French toast) …simply delicious.
