These Bars Transform Into Tropical Escapes Each Winter

"Perched beside Lake Ontario in Rochester’s Sea Breeze District for more than 80 years, this beachfront bar mixes firepits, an antique jukebox, live music, and vintage tiki charm that predates the modern revival, with roots as a Prohibition-era speakeasy where George Magin poured Scofflaws made from bootleg Canadian liquor; today it’s a beloved lakeside haunt where summer energy lingers even when the shoreline freezes and you find snow outside but sand underfoot." - Carrie Honaker

I am not sure but don’t think they do food here. I didn’t see a menu. This place bills itself as a vintage watering hole. It is that indeed. Has seating on the beach and a few small rooms with tables and other seating. Kind of a Key West vibe on Lake Ontario.

Clara M.

Google
Went for one drink and stayed almost 4 hours. Had such a wonderful time, the drinks were delicious. Music was amazing, very clean beach. Would go back 100%

George

Google
Great atmosphere! We had drinks outside on the beach & watched the sunset! They allow outside food.

W. C.

Google
So great here I love the vibe! We brought our own food in and sat in the back by the window to watch the water on a cold day. It was so quiet and cozy! The barteneder said they're entering their slow season but I liked it more than when we went in the summer and it was packed. Either way we will be back anytime we're up that way!

Shayna R.

Google
Stopped here after dinner in an attempt to have a good view of the lake and hit the jackpot! What a perfect spot to watch the sun set and enjoy the beach that is completely closed to the public.

Michael L.

Google
Stumbled in on a coctail competition on the beach. Sat at the Tiki bar -- fun night, great crowd.

Google
I LOVE this place - Rochester’s local Key West-ish tiki bar!!! Perfect spot for drinks with friends & to see the sunset over the lake. We’ve been going here for a long time. Spring- Summer-Fall 😊 never been in the winter but it is open then too! The Rum Rita is my fav cocktail. It’s Their Secret Recipe - I try making it at home but never quite right. You can order food & have it delivered or get take out from the places near by. I have to say it’s been an adjustment these past few years, with the “assigned seating” now & the $5 cover charge (or more w/ entertainment) every day of the week?? It seems..? My friends & I love this place - was lucky enough to have the whole place practically to ourselves the day I retired - it was a Rainy day, we didn’t care - had a great time!

Michelle M.

Google
One of the most amazing hidden gems in the Rochester area. A tiny bar, amazing beach vibe. Feet in sand. Could have used cocktail waitresses on beach due to number of guests. Useful info: $5 cover charge, no smoking on property, live music (check schedule)

Yelp
Excellent vibes! Love the live music and the views right on the lake are hard to beat. There's QR codes at each Barrel table so you can order directly, which I recommend. Make sure you bring your beach shoes as it is literally on the beach. The only downside is the inside is a bit small so sometimes hard to navigate through if you're ordering inside or walking in and out
google avatar

Max K.

Yelp
Best ambiance to view the sunset from. They have plenty of seating out in the sand, very casual and comfortable. An incredible place to hang out and relax with amazing sunset views. They have a qr code at each table or set of chairs so you can order from your seat and they will bring your drink to you. They've got a pretty efficient set up going
google avatar

Anthony I.

Yelp
The best dive bar that happens to be on the beach with live music and drinking on the sand watching the sunset and the boats go by?! Sign me up!

Jan F.

Yelp
Great place! Keep it simple! A dive bar with a great location! Solid bands,! But most important awesome beach setting! downside place packs on weekends!
google avatar

Justin S.

Yelp
The drinks are good and easy to get. The service is pretty good if you call someone over. The ambiance is nice and it is the only place like it in Rochester. Everyone is friendly.

Yelp
Great location to have a drink and catch the sunset with your feet in the sand. Mixed drinks are not their specialty, stick to the basics, gin and tonic, canned stuff, etc. The outside bar is cash only, but there is a server that makes the rounds and she takes e-payments. Live music ends at 9, local noise ordinances I think. They're very strict about IDs, I'm 55, and look it, but they checked my ID. They don't serve food, I saw someone bring a pizza in with them though so I'm guessing they're ok with that. This place is really all about the location and setting. It really is in a beautiful spot, right on the water. The sandy beach is soft, there are a ton of outside chairs and old barrels to put your drinks on. Wear flip flops and take them off as soon as you step outside. There's always a cool breeze coming off the lake, even on hot and humid nights. Dig your toes in the sand and sit back with a drink to watch one of the most beautiful sunsets in Rochester.

Yelp
You almost forget you're in Rochester when you're here-- truly a gem. When you first arrive, there's someone in front collecting an entrance fee, which was $5 per person when we came, not bad. It's truly worth it for this view of the beach and fun live music playing. We arrived just in time for sunset on a Wednesday evening and scored the last table (or barrel). Once we entered, there's a bar to order drinks. Although we didn't realize, but you can order from your seats too. We made our way to our barrel table where there's a QR code to order drinks to be brought out to you. There's always waitresses coming around to take your orders if you prefer too. This was the perfect scenery with live music playing, sunset reflecting in the background, and affordable drinks all around. I had a Jameson and Gingerale as my first drink, and then a Frozen Margarita for my second since I saw everyone else having one. All the drinks are under $10, which is cheap (but this is coming from someone from a big city). Such a fun spot to hang out here. Definitely try to make it out for sunset, but still a must anytime in Rochester. You really feel like you're at a beach town city here.
google avatar

Olivia B.

Yelp
We had a great time here! $5 cover with live music, good drinks, and you can sit out on the beach. Can definitely get a bit crowded so we came around 5 PM on a Saturday and we were still able to get seated outside. If you go on their website or Facebook pages, they let you know what bands are playing. They also don't serve food but you can bring food in which I appreciated. Will definitely be back!
google avatar

Gordon V.

Yelp
What a great place to put your toes in the sand on the beach with a cold drink and listen to a band! I have been coming here for years and it's so fun!!! There is a cover charge for the bands sometimes $10 or $5 depends on the band, don't forget your ID. Always a friendly hello and greeting and you can sit alone or with new found friends. Cool barrel tables with chairs right on the beach. There is an indoor bar and seating indoors if you prefer sometimes nice on those windy or rainy days. The outdoor tiki bar is cash only. They carry some local beers, wine, mixed drinks, good variety. The staff is awesome!!!! Can't wait to go back!

Laila P.

Yelp
love this place! we went for the live music and the sunset and had the best time ever! couldn't have asked for a better night #margeslakesideinn #buzzybooth

Yelp
Just a note to start that this is NOT my first trip to Marges. - just my first review of it. I have been going to this great lakeside bar for over 20 years. But they've made some changes here. Now when you go during the summer and go out on the beach, you get seated at a table with nice chairs. They have each table numbered and have a QR code where you can order drinks to be delivered to your table. There's also a QR code to have Bill Grays food delivered as well. But about the bar. The inside is a kitchy old-time seaside/Lakeside house that has tons of character and charm! And that's great for any season that's not summer. But in the summer, you walk out the back door and you feel like you're in Key West with the sand and the sun and the music and the tiki bar. There's really no other place like it in our area. They have a great selection of beers and mixed drinks. And also frozen margaritas and rum runners. This is one of my favorite places to go in Rochester. They have a great live music and a jukebox indoors too. Check out Marge's- I think you will love it- I do!

John R.

Yelp
Great place!! However is it necessary for the young female bartender to be extremely enraged/visibly mad when you order drinks? I was under the impression that was part of the job? I'll hang up and listen

Squirrel Mom C.

Yelp
bartender and man at door were very friendly. excellent customer service and amazing view thank you very relaxing watching the surfers

Yelp
Marges is the greatest hidden gem on Lake Ontario- great vibe... winter or summer. Dark and cozy on a snowy winter day and a beach that beckons to sit and sip while watching the sun set in the summer! #margeslakesideinn #buzzybooth
google avatar

Natalee F.

Yelp
The best beach vibes in Rochester. This place is a gem, you can sit out on the soft sand beach and drink and watch the sunset. Go on summer Mondays or Tuesdays for freedom from the strict rules of the other nights - on those nights no bands, you can sit where you want, etc. Go on other nights for kind of annoying lame rules - if you are only 2 people, you can only sit on the side chairs, only facing the glaring sun, etc. Not sure why those side chairs can't be where the sun is at your back. They even have food on weekends like a charcuterie board stand or hot dogs/hamburgers. I was SO IMPRESSED they even had vegan Beyond Burgers at their hotdog stand - amazing! Otherwise you can order or bring your own food in. The only mixed drinks are canned, but they are pretty good. I like the pina colada - get a lot of ice to pour it in. It's strong! The staff is friendly, the vibe is very Jimmy Buffet, and the view is the best. Only one bathroom for ladies so prepare to stand in line if it's busy - or do like I do, just use the mens bathroom instead.

Yelp
We visit friends in Rochester once or twice a year only when the "stars are aligned" By that I mean our favorite hotel (The Del Monte) is available and Marge's Lakeside Inn is open. Marge's is greater than the Great Lake it's located on! You pay a reasonable cover ($5) for entry and are seated at a table on the private beach which is part of Marge's. Drink service is excellent. As we're usually there on a Saturday or Sunday, the live music starts around 4 and helps to provide the vibe that keeps bringing us back here every visit. Beach, water, music and drinks-how could things not be perfect? With COVID (pre and post) having a huge effect on businesses such as Marge's, I've always called or messaged to confirm open hours especially before making our trip. Responsiveness from management (Francine - who I believe is the owner) is fantastic. She runs a great place and goes out of her way to accommodate her customers. We need to make another visit to Rochester later this Summer to get our "Marge's" fix. I really cannot remember a bar even going back to my college days that I've enjoyed so much.

Yelp
Fun and sun are all this Inn is about. Beach front music, beverages and entertainment . What more can be said. This is a go to place for fun.

Yelp
Omg I had the time of my life yesterday (Saturday 7/30/22) at Marge's, the coolest bands were there. I met some of the band members of BB dang including the lead vocals who is wicked talented, I'm hopin I get to see them play in Nashville or CMAC in the near future! Wow I was so impressed! Best of luck to the band:))) The set up on the beach was perfect, weather was unreal, the beer was great, great peeps, great vibe, great music! Really wonderful! Marge's knows what's up, they know how to throw a party! I had a great time dancin', if u have never been to Marge's now is the time to go!
google avatar

Tracey A.

Yelp
After being gone a few days, my friend's husband returned and as she recounted to him the things we'd done in his absence he suggested she take me to Marge's. "You know, that place on the sand" he said, as she tried to recall what, where, or who Marge was. Then he turned to me: "you get a drink and go out back and you're sitting right there on the sand, on the shore of Lake Ontario". Marge's immediately scaled to the top of my to-do list. The day before leaving Rochester we made our way to Marge's with adequate time to get drinks (full bar) from the dimly lit tiki-esque interior then walk out back and choose from an array of chairs (plastic Adirondacks are perfect). Ropes delineate the boundaries of Marge's and I dragged myself, my drink, and the Adirondack to the edge of the rope closest to the water then planted myself there. Believe me when I say that there are few things in the world better than spending time with friends on a beach with a cold drink in your hand, watching as the sun slowly sets over the water. If you rightly trust in the real estate adage "location, location, location" you'll easily understand why Marge's is winning. Rochester weather is fickle and I've no belief that Marge's is a 5-star destination during much of the year, especially when Lake Ontario freezes over. For a brief moment in September though, it is the height of casual perfection. With interior photos spanning Marge's lifetime, this place feels well loved and rightly so. It's quite special and unique.

Yelp
Weekend crowd with a long wait for beach seating but they still allowed us to pay admission under false pretenses. Ask a lot of questions before paying cover charge.
google avatar

Paige L.

Yelp
COVID-19 Summer 2020 review - Marge's is taking many safety precautions. They have tables set up with a max of 6 - only people in your party can sit with you. They are tracking their numbers from the front entrance so be sure to arrive early if you want to get in. If you're inside, you must wear a mask. They also have staff in the backyard to clear tables and bring drinks out. All of their staff members wore masks and were properly sanitizing tables and chairs as soon as guests were leaving. Marge's still has the amazing Marge's feel even with limited capacity. Also, they closed at 10 pm on the day I went so you may want to double check the hours with them before you arrive.

Yelp
Best lake side bar and music! Stopped here on a July 4th to see Alyssa Trahan perform. Got to dig our toes in the sand and meet some great folks! Francine is the best and such a great host!!
google avatar

Cindi C.

Yelp
Had a wonderful time tonight! The vibe was chill and fun! We sat inside and listened to the band ! They were great! Great voices! Was a good time to enjoy one of the last warm days of the season! #margeslakesideinn #buzzybooth
google avatar

Ruth C.

Yelp
Yipee! Marge's is open for the season! Took a motorcycle ride there yesterday for Mother's Day. Sunny day but cool on the beach. But who cares... again itt was sunny and we could drink! On the beach. Yes, drink on the beach :) Bartender very friendly and attentive. Love this little "hole in the wall" type bar. Can't wait for the warmer weather and live music. Just FYI the Live music does start next week! Check out their facebook page for events. Would definitely recommend!

Annie S.

Yelp
Beautiful location right on the water. There are a bunch of fire pits so you can choose one with your friends and stay warm at night with your toes in the sand and listen to live music, need I say more?

Annie S.

Yelp
Cute bar by the lake, tons of fit pits so you can go with your group and put your feet in the sand while youre around the fire with a drink listening to live music... need i say more?
google avatar

Brian N.

Yelp
The best kind of dive bar in alll the right way. Even if marge does chase you out after selling you new drinks at closing time, the staff will apologize for her behavior on your way out.

Susanna M.

Yelp
GREAT TIME! Alcoholics & private beach during sun. Here are a few picture uploads. For my birthday make up.
google avatar

Dana B.

Yelp
What a fun place!! Went on a Sunday afternoon and had a blast! We sat out back of the house with a beautiful view of the lake! The band they had called XOXO were absolutely amazing! It was such a blast dancing in the sand with a drink in hand ;) !! Must watch the sun set, it was stunning!!
google avatar

matt f.

Yelp
Its easier to get into the white house than this place. Wristbands, cover charge, walkie talkies. Jesus. Rude staff, shit service, Marge is in over her head. Thank god its on the beach, or else it would be 0/5 stars.
google avatar

Danielle C.

Yelp
One of Rochester's hidden gems! If you are in the mood to put your feet in the sand, listen to great local bands and enjoy a cold beverage, you have found the perfect spot! Marge's is the beach bar version of Cheers. You will feel right at home in this enthusiastic and fun loving bar. If you're hungry, they don't have a menu but welcome any delivery service out front or you can carry in your own.
google avatar

Shannon S.

Yelp
What a great place!! How have I lived here for over three years and no one has told me about this place?? It was wonderful ordering a margarita and walking out to the beach, walking barefoot in the sand, and watching the sun set and the water! I felt like I was in FL only 20 min from home!! From the yelp pics, it looks like an awesome place to come for live music or other occasions. It had a great beach-y vibe and decor though extremely dark inside. Prices for drinks were reasonable and as the menu says, the frozen drinks "aren't fru-fru" meaning they aren't sweet but have a good proportion of alcohol. And if you want more, you can order a chaser for $2 extra. It comes in a fun test tube turned upside down! I'll definitely be back soon!!
google avatar

Kevin C.

Yelp
First time stopping in. Bar very small and nothing inside. You won't want to hang out inside anyway because the setting out back on the water very nice. Sand & Lake Ontario. Large seating area in the sand. Enjoy a drink or 2 watching the sun set & the moon rise. Friendly & helpful waitresses.
google avatar

Lea B.

Yelp
Pros: Beach Booze Beer Live Music Free Popcorn Beach (Did I mention that already?) Credit Accepted! Tiki Bar outside Allowed to bring outside food in Lots of seating outside Flip Flops are a must! Cons: NO FOOD SERVICE....(don't ask, because they do not like this question) Parking Bathrooms = TINY and Long Ladies Line Can's only (Beach Friendly, so don't ask about bottled anything) So here's the deal for those of you who have not been here.....upon entrance this place appears as a small bungalow. Step in, order your drink at the tiny bar and then head outside. They don't serve food so feel free to grab yourself some food from Bill Grays in advance. (This is actually encouraged) Definitely not a fancy place. Grab your own chair from the stack and take a seat on the sand. It can get chilly quick, so pack a sweater for the evenings/sun down. Flip Flops are a must!!! For the ladies, the bathroom situation is tough. Its a small space with a low ceiling and a red light. Not sure what that's all about, but don't say you weren't warned. See you there!

Brian H.

Yelp
This is a FUN place. It's like going back in time - to 1960's & 1970's!! No one is a stranger there (even if you've never been). I still remember the first time I walked in; I made new friends within 2 minutes! The building is small; but during nice weather it opens up to the beach - right on the shore of Lake Ontario. Who's the clientel? You'll find some business owner that may make $2 Million a yr dancing on the beach with a retired janitor. At Marge's it just doesn't matter. Everyone is there to have a great time !!
google avatar

Kelly S.

Yelp
Walking up it doesn't look like much, actually kind of small. You have to park across the street and walk over, but it's not far. But once inside grab some drinks (I recommend two) They have the normal beers here, but go for the RumRita, frozen margaritas or my favorite a rum runner. Once you have your drinks, head out back. Trust me, you want to be on the beach, it's like a mini vacation here in Rochester. Wear flip flops so you can put your toes in the sand and sit back and listen to some live music... all while enjoying a perfect sunset glistening off the lake. Sometimes they have bonfires out back to enjoy as well. It can get very busy here, so once you grab a spot on the sand sit back and relax!

Yelp
Sadly, this review is based solely on a phone call experience. Having never been there, i called to see if they offered a menu. The woman on the phone said they had cold gazpacho soup with a side of goldfish crackers. For clarification, I asked if they also offered a full menu. She said that's all they had and hung up. Um, rude. Horrible customer service.

Paul R.

Yelp
What a bunch of regulated goofs. VIP stations, all seats are assigned, roped off areas. beach only accommodations for us second class citizens. That is all fine but I didn't need a finger in my face to get the message. The management was definitely stressed before the day started and in over their heads. I had asked when they started requiring reservations because I had been to the event before and was told I was a liar. Really ??? I am a individual that pays my way and is never confrontational. What could have been a fun day was ruined by a crude staff. What I have known as a place to frequent in the past is no longer on my fun list. There are plenty of spots in town and this is no longer one of them that I will patronize or recommend. A bad choice indeed.

Anthony G.

Yelp
This place is great! Always has good music to listen to and relax while having a drink with friends. And the waitstaff always keep the drinks coming. I love coming here!

Kim S.

Yelp
Great place, people and views!! The place to be in the summer!! Love the adult capri suns!!

C R.

Yelp
Fun! Fun! Fun! Only downside is the restroom facilities. Better be able to hold it if the place is busy.

Patrick M.

Yelp
Great "beach" location... it's a lake. That's the only redeeming quality of this place. Way overpriced, rude and annoying staff who question you wherever you go. 2 canned drinks costed almost $20 cash only. $5 cover on a Sunday afternoon. Was directed to only be able to sit against a certain wall. The floor inside is sinking. They seem to be trying to be a destination beach bar and it is nothing of the sort.
google avatar

Melissa S.

Yelp
We came in from out of town for the weekend (New York city ) and wanted to visit this place. I called on Saturday and spoke to a guy on the phone. He told me they would be open on Sunday. We went all the way there to see a sign that says " closed for private event" not cool. Please inform the staff about any hourly changes. Obviously nobody told him they would be closed the next day.....
google avatar

Breanna B.

Yelp
Marge's, I love you so. It's a slice of vacation in our darling city. The bar is like an over the top, somewhat misplaced tiki hut. But they deliver on the fun times. It can get packed so I recommend grabbing 2 drinks before heading out back. You'll find your run of the mill beers, but definitely sample their always churning frozen margaritas or rum runners (they do run on the sweeter side, FYI). Once you make it to the sand, it's pure bliss. You're transported to your favorite beach vacation spot as you put your feet in the sand. I suppose that's as good as it gets here in Rochester on Lake Ontario. It's no Outer Banks or Caribbean beach bar, but it'll do. They often bring in great bands to kick the night up a few notches. It's the perfect place for a fab night out with friends. Sit back and relax, you're on vacay for this one moment.

Yelp
Alright, enough of the winter! It's time to start thinking about bars on the lake and time in the sun - and Marge's is probably one of the best of them. Cheesy? Yes. Tacky? Oh yeah. Shameless? Check. But you'll love it. Marge's Lakeside Inn has been around as a bar for over 50 years (maybe more!) and sits in a residential strip off Culver Rd by Lake Ontario. It's across the street from Don's Original and Bill Gray's and you may miss it if you're looking for "a bar." It's not a bar, it's a house. As you can see from the photos, it's got a Margaritaville feel to it and the place can seriously help you forget that you're in Rochester on warm sunny summer days. The bar usually opens at 2pm on weekends in the summer (sometimes earlier) and there were a few years that my friends and I were camped outside the front door waiting for it to open. Bathing suits and flip flops allowed, it's best to get there early to secure prime sun-bathing real estate and to make sure that the free popcorn machine is working. Beers? Budweiser, Coors, Corona - all in aluminum cans of course, no glass allowed outside! Your best bet is to try a frozen tropical treat. Marge's - the best beach bar to people-watch and sunbathe and relax in Rochester! Just be careful driving home: the police frequently set up mandatory checkpoints on 590 South because they know about the lush lakesiders.
google avatar

PJ C.

Yelp
Nothing else like it in the Rochester area. We've been coming here for years - even before they had a beach! The jukebox is gold (though it used to be even weirder in the past). The quirky atmosphere and great location right on the lake cannot be beat. The large beach with all the tables and beach chairs is great and can be jammed when the weather is warm - though surprisingly it was pretty quiet on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. Decent beer selection - all in cans (no glass on the beach!). Cannot say I ever ordered a mixed drink here... seemed like asking too much. The old-fashioned bowling game when working is a classic. Thank goodness this kind of place still survives and is more popular than ever.
google avatar

Kristina L.

Yelp
Try the Rum-Rita, half rum runner/half margarita. It's a frozen slushie and goes perfect with a beautiful sunset on the beach!
google avatar

Jen R.

Yelp
Holy Crap... Summer Sand Cocktails Sunsets Maybe a Bonfire Yes, Yes, Yes... Why only 4 stars.. PARKING IS A PAIN! No food, but I saw people bringing in Bill Gray's burgers They are known for the frozen drinks, they make themselves no mix. The RumRita, get one $7 is a fair price. They have beer and etc.. Wear flip flops you will take off your shoes. The view of Lake Ontario is stunning, sure it's not Hawaii, the Caribbean or the Mediterranean but with the sun setting over the lake, the candy colored skies and a cold drink with good friends make up for that. Bring your friends, outta towers. It's laid back and EVERYONE goes. Yes you are carded, who cares.... You can buy a sippy cup, a t-shirt... Have a cocktail, take a few photos and kick back and be happy it's the summer.... Pretty flawless..... GO

Yelp
A dive bar with a beach, in ROC. It's perfect in every way. Call an uber, watch the sun set beyond the lake and get crunked!
