On the Grid : Maria Bonita

"If you're thinking you didn't come to Germany to eat Mexican food, you're wrong. This teeny taqueria has handmade tortillas, salsas and simple dishes that are bursting with flavor and mescal margaritas to boot! The rustic enamelware and plastic cups give that authentic street food look, feel and taste." - Gabby Lord

As a Mexican myself, it's unusual to find good mexican restaurants (most of them are just Tex-mex US food) but this one is really good! The asada tacos really feel like street mexican tacos! The quesadilla was delicious as well. Give this place a try!

Google
Kinda bumped into this place and was intrigued by the queue while neighbouring places were empty. It was a blast. The food was beyond tasty and the frozen drink was delightful! The staff are nice too. I would go back. (I ordered a quesadilla and margarita.)

Amna Abdullah

Google
Loved the nachos and guacamole. The tacos were okay. Quesadilla was better! Margaritas were spot on! Cool vibe. Kinda cutesy! ❤️

Google
the food was okay, it tasted good, just a hint of something missing. the service was really amazing, very nice staff and the food was quick!

Google
I love this place so much. I'm American and find it really difficult to find good Mexican food in Germany. This place is the bomb. The menu and the seating is very limited, but the service is super quick and friendly. The carnitas with cheese are amazing!

Google
Super tasty, but also very greasy… but also super tasty. Best burrito I’ve found in the city. Much closer to authentic flavours than the usual spots in Berlin. Absolutely worth a try.

Google
A nice Mexican bistro to have a quick bite. It's easy to reach, next to a tram stop. The food is good, the prices are normal. Nothing mind blowing or wrong. It's a small place. There is limited space inside and it's hot. There are tables outside but it can be challenging in the summer due to the scorching sun. There are not many trees to cast a shadow. It's a convenient bistro to eat something quick and move on. If it aligns with your expectations then nothing disappointing.

Google
I remember María Bonita was better in the past. Unfortunately we had a different experience in our last visit. Very greasy quesadilla, I wouldn’t add oil to the outside of the tortillas and also the guacamole sauce added to these quesadilla is too acid, better let people add it at their own convenience. My girlfriend ordered the Tinga de Pollo burrito, and it was more beans than Tinga, it was also quite greasy, and wasn’t fun. As a Mexican, I have to admit I was quite disappointed by the quality of the Food and would love to see it go back to where it was.

Yelp
This is probably one of the better options for Mexican food in Germany. The workers were from Argentina and they tried to duplicate Mexican border tapas. The meat was a little salty compared to what I am used to but the food was good in general. The refried beans were definately from a can but the pico de gallo was spot on. There was some confusion between the tacos I ordered and the burritos I received. But the Jamaica drink I am used to tasted the same. They do not have ice so fresh drinks and bottles are refrigerator cold. Nacho chips were on point!
google avatar

David Ethan T.

Yelp
Friendly people, great food. Closest thing there is to Los Angeles Mexican food. Definitely worth the visit

JJ Z.

Yelp
got the carnitas quesadilla. Was 10€ for half of a usual quesadilla so was taken a bit aback but it was super yummy. If youre in the area and want a snack or quick bite - definitely be prepared for the menu and portion size tho!
google avatar

Justin C.

Yelp
This food is really good like the burritos and the guacamole and I also have noticed that the restaurants food has gotten better and better!
google avatar

Günter H.

Yelp
Great tacos! I can definitely recommend the Alambre tacos with beef. However, I wouldn't order the corn chips with guacamole again. I found the guac a bit too bland. At Friday 7pm, there was a queue. But it didn't room too long. The tacos are worth the wait. You can pay by card for bills of at least 15€.
google avatar

Catalin-Alexandru E.

Yelp
The tacos are really delicious, they could have more diversity, also when it comes to veggie options. There was only one available, with sweet potatoes. The meat was good quality and also the veggies. I found it way to expensive for what they offer but way better than any other places with the same theme. Cash only is also not an option in Berlin nowadays.
google avatar

Brian C.

Yelp
Pretty underwhelming burrito that only had steak and beans, garnished with a bit of chopped onions on the top. The burrito was huge and I think they expect you to eat it with a knife and fork because it was not wrapped at the ends. The meat had a decent flavor too it, but the refried beans made it taste like those microwavable burritos from the supermarket. If this burrito had more balance simply by adding Spanish rice and onions/cilantro, it would be amazing! Such a missed opportunity, but I might be back to try the chilaquiles or huevos rancheros.
google avatar

Maria M.

Yelp
Simply the best tacos in Berlin. Try the carne asada! It is a casual place but the service is warm and cool. Beautiful neighborhood, they have vegetarian options and mezcal! Maybe they should add a michelada to be complete ;) Every time I am in Berlin And I crave mexican food, I come here!
google avatar

Jonathan R.

Yelp
I got a veggie burrito (beans and sweet potatoes) to go. When I unwrapped it in the park, 250 meters from the restaurant, I discovered a stew, vaguely wrapped in a tortilla. How they imagine this "burrito" to be holdable-eatable and worthy of serving a customer at lunch time is beyond me. They were also quite literal about the "beans and sweet potato" description; there wasn't a single other vegetable in that burrito.

Sami B.

Yelp
Didn't look like much from the outside but was recommended to come here by friends. Menu was not too big, which made it easier to choose. Also there was not much seating in the place, mainly just bar stool style. I wanted something vegetarian so I got the quesadilla de queso & my friend got chilaquiles. We both ordered blended margaritas which were super tasty and quite cheap. Our food came really fast and both meals were delicious and fair portion size. Will definitely go back to try again:)

Yelp
Living in Germany for a while after living in Texas my whole life has made me miss..Mexican food. And oh boy! This place finally hit the spot!!! I have tried many Mexican restaurants all over Germany and was so surprised with Maria Bonita. I'm so thankful to Rick Steve's for adding it on to his restaurant recommendations. I ordered the pork belly quesadillas and my husband the carne asada tacos and it was DELICIOUS! I knew it was legit because they also served horchata and spoke Spanish. This restaurant is definitely a hole in the wall so not many seating options. We lucked out and got seats straight away before a flood of customers came in.
google avatar

Connor B.

Yelp
This minimalist hole in the wall was the perfect spot to satisfy my American hunger for good Mexican food halfway around the world. My wife and I ordered the tacos - chicken and carnitas. While not the best tacos we've ever had, they were definitely good and satisfying! The carnitas were juicy and mild - almost bland, while the pulled chicken was spiced up a bit and hinted of BBQ. It is a bit pricier than street food at €2 per small taco, but still not bad. Limited seating and no bathroom made this a nice quick stop on our tour of Prenzlauer Berg. There's a ton of food in the area, but I doubt you'd find better Mexican!

Philipp M.

Yelp
Best Mexican Food in Berlin, also no better place for frozen Booz!!!! I ordered the food and it was perfect. Ordered a second round right after.
google avatar

Thomas S.

Yelp
Was super surprised to find a legit tasty burrito in Europe, it was delicious! Got it with carnitas. Different from a typical burrito in the US (more of a fork and knife affair) but it can compare with good spots in California.
google avatar

Sherry S.

Yelp
This place is only good when you and eat there. But delivery sucks!!! BIG!!! It didnt seem like they put any effort in ensembling my burrito. Taste was also soso. For 16 euros i was dissapointed as hell about the delivery At the restaurant the food looks way better and also tast better. And i felt like i had more for less money. Conclusion: dont deliver here make the effort to go that place (which is very cute and cool stuff).
google avatar

Jesse F.

Yelp
Edit: I've been back with a group and this time the "burrito" actually tasted pretty good. That was *not* a modern-day burrito. I grew up in California, where the Mission-style burrito was invented, which is the style you'll find 95+% of the time. This burrito, unfortunately, wasn't. Instead, it was open on both sides and filled only with a refried bean and meat purée. No rice and no salsa. All of that would be fine, although not what I consider to be a standard burrito, but the reason For the low rating is that it simply didn't taste good, of much like anything at all. It was bland, and the fact that the filling was puréed together instead of being actual pieces of meat didn't help. However, their margarita was pretty decent, so it wasn't all bad. Time to keep searching for an actual decent taqueria :/
google avatar

Andreas S.

Yelp
NEVER AGAIN. This is how the chips that i ordered came. They were totally soggy, beans tasted like crap and guacamole was super watery. There is this bold guy that was really rude all the time and didn't respect the customers. Seriously not mexican at all.

Jim P.

Yelp
Just had some a great meal at Maria Bonita! Carne Asado Tacos with a side of chips and guacamole. I really liked that they grilled the cheese before putting it on the taco. Super friendly staff. We'll be back before we leave Berlin.
google avatar

Gemma S.

Yelp
As Californian, Mexican food is a craving I have been having here in Berlin and good Mexican food is hard to find (Que Pasa doesn't do it justice). On Cinco de Mayo, my friend told me that someone had told him about a good Mexican place right in Prenzlauer Berg so we went to check it out. Maria Bonita is small, cutely and colorfully decorated and a great place to grab a bite with a friend - as long as you don't mind waiting a little bit. We got Margaritas which were amazing and potent, chips and guac and tacos. The chips were good and the guac was good although I felt like it could have had a little more spice to it. The amount they give though is nice for the price you pay! Ample amount of guac! The tacos were massive and tasty. The chicken was plain and definitely could have used some greens on it, but it was still good. The carne asada though with melted cheese was amazing and made me wish I had ordered it for myself (I only had a few bites of the tacos). They also have Corona's with lime which is nice although it costs EU3 which is a bit more than buying one at a Spätkauf. Overall, the experience was great and I only wish they had a bit faster service and more tables to sit outside! Definitely recommend to any Mexican food lovers in Berlin!

Yelp
Maria Bonita receives a lot of praise from the Mexican food lovers I know, but I've been twice already and am not all that convinced. The menu is pretty small and meat-heavy, but there is a vegetarian section. Unfortunately, three of the four options have eggs in them, which means only one is capable of being vegan without having to remove some of the main ingredients. Prices are OK in general, though compared to what you get at other burrito joints in town, they are a bit on the higher side. The first time I went, they had the Rajas something or other, which was so unmemorable that I can't even remember what was in it. It tasted fine, but yeah, not something that made me want to come back. The second time I went, recently, they had gotten rid of that option and had a sweet potato chipotle option, which sounded good. I had them hold the sour cream to make it vegan, and it was pretty OK, but again, not amazing. I guess what puts me off about the burritos I've had it that the flavors don't really blend together super well... plus the burritos are full of cilantro, which I just can't get behind. If I go again, I would ask to have no cilantro, but Maria Bonita is more one of those places that I will only eat at if I am in the area and don't know what else to get.
google avatar

Sue M.

Yelp
This is in no way real Mexican food, and not even tasty food at that. Lumpy, overly cold guacamole and flavorless, overly salty tacos de alambre.
google avatar

Thao T.

Yelp
The food was okay but the burrito was really heavy on beans - I almost didn't taste the chicken in it. Besides beans and chicken, there wasn't much else which was disappointing. The tacos looked good but I didn't try them so can't say much about that.
google avatar

Lene H.

Yelp
I went to Maria Bonita for a late lunch today, and it might have been the unusual warm weather making me cranky, loosing my appetite.. but I found Maria Bonita to be much overrated. I had the vegetarian quesadilla and it was just.. blah! Too much cheese for one, and it just didn't taste good really. I had trouble finishing it off. I was however also eying the fish tacos, and based on other people's reviews I think I will give this tiny Mexican joint another go in order to try those.. hopefully I can update my review with a better rating then. (update: i went back for the fish tacos, and although they were much fresher.. the fish was deep fried and tasteless.. and it's still two stars from me..)
google avatar

Nick S.

Yelp
Epic carnitas. Crispy, succulent pork with fresh salsas and tasty tortillas. Sadly, the fish tacos aren't quite as good. It's not that they aren't also delicious - they are - but you only get two tacos with the saddest finger-sized piece of fish each. For € 6, you should get 2-3x the amount of fish. As it is, they're mostly lettuce. Aside from that, this place gets top marks. The frozen margaritas, while a bit pricey, are also outstanding. Fair warning - the chipotle cream on the fish tacos is proper spicy. If you're not used to a little heat, I wouldn't recommend getting them.

Yelp
Lovely mexican food in Prenzlauer Berg. Really authentic and reminded me a lot of my travels in Mexico and Central America! A lot of flavour and a great margharita!! Perfect hangover-munchies place! It is also quite cheap - which is just a bonus for me. Lots of flavor. REMEMBER to get the two different hot sauces that are placed on the kitchen counter right next to where you pay!! It's free, so just go crazy.. The habanero sauce is really KICKING! :-D - there is a couple of chairs inside(I think there is room for app. 7-8 people) and there are some tables and chairs outside in the summer. note: there is no toilet.

Yelp
After eating here today, I feel like I've been reunited with a long lost lover. I'm being totally serious! After movng from California to London last year I feel like it's been a terribly long time since I've had authentic Mexican street-style food especially "real" tacos: tasty little mounds of grilled meat, piled on small fresh homemade corn tortillas. The carnitas tacos are especially good. They also have a beef taco which has crispy pieces of bacon mixed up in it - Oh hells yea!! The quesadillas are made with homemade, fresh flour tortillas and an interesting mix of melty cheese and I think some goats cheese for a little kick. The place is really small, just a couple benches outside and some counter style seating inside for maybe 10-12 people. If you can't get a seat, just get your food to-go - it is 'street food' after all :) Due to the success of this place, the owners have a couple other restaurants: Santa Maria is larger and focuses on street-style food and the other sister restaurant named Maria Peligro has a bit of a hipster vibe and a bit more polished presentation. Have not checked these places out yet, but will do so soon and report back.
google avatar

Ian R.

Yelp
A very good Mexican food takeaway eatery. It's owns by the same people as Santa Maria in Kreuzberg. This location is Santa Maria-lite, with a smaller menu selection that's perfect to take away. There is basically no seating, only a couple of standing tables along the side of the room. The location is convenient if you live in Prenzlauer Berg, but can be a bit of a commute if you live elsewhere. The prices are good for the quality of the food. A nice pit-stop for those exploring the surrounding neighborhood.

Yelp
The best tacos I've had in Germany! I'm visiting from Los Angeles and authentic Mexican food is hard to find in Germany but this was as close as it comes. We had the chicken tacos which were a little too saucy for my taste but the Carne asada tacos were damn near perfect and exactly what you'd find at any taco truck in Los Angeles. The spicy avocado salsa was indeed spicy but delicious and you can wash it down with a Mexican beer or a frozen Margarita!
google avatar

Esteban T.

Yelp
Burrito de puerco especial is amazing. Definitely recommended. Haven't much from the rest of the menu. Couple of things weren't all that special
google avatar

Sophie P.

Yelp
It's the most authentic Mexican food you can get in Germany. It was quite delicious and service was fine. What I did enjoy was that the sauces they provided actually tasted pretty close to being authentic, and even better yet, they serves HORCHATA. This place was literally the only place I could get a horchata with my meal!
google avatar

Lisa M.

Yelp
I came here in search for good Mexican food. We had: the weekly special (burrito), the pollo quesadilla & guac. Guac: texture was nice, flavor good, but it could've used more spices. Burrito: okay. but the taste was rather weak. Quesadilla: I don't know but for some reason it reminded me of pizza?! Might have been the sauce. the cheesiness was not like the usual one (thin, melted, kinda mixing in with the other ingredients), but the cheese was thick and hard.
google avatar

Trent Z.

Yelp
AUTHENTIC MEXICAN FOOD IN BERLIN!!! I searched high and low for years - discovered this place that hasn't been open even a week yet (July 25, 2009)- and was blown away! This is the real thing! I grew up eating Mexican food in California and Mexico and this is the closest you'll get, certainly on this continent. I'll definitely become a regular and wish these guys from Mexico City great success, especially with their expansion plans! Viva la Mexico! Trent
google avatar

Carmen R.

Yelp
Woohoo! The best mexican food I have had in Berlin, especially if you are a non-meat eater. I like this even better than Santa Maria Eastside (which seems to be everyone's favourite) Great guac, amazing margaritas. Small rotating selection of craft beer. Tip: I don't suggest the vegetarian tacos. It is the only thing on the menu I tried that did not like. the sweet potato is a bit too soggy, watery, and messy to make a good taco. However, the sweet potato quesadilla and burrito are spot on :)
google avatar

Eduardo R.

Yelp
This place is freaking awesome. As a Mexican who has lived in Germany off and on over the years, I have found it really hard to find good quality Mexican food. Usually you will find places serving something disgusting like chips with ketchup. Maria Bonita is a breath of fresh air. Delicious, great service and just like home. I really like it!!
google avatar

Mathew L.

Yelp
Best Tacos in Berlin. Best Guac in Berlin! I lived in SF and LA so have pedigree to comment. Everyone else needs to step up their game
google avatar

Ariel H.

Yelp
Oh, no. Taste was OK, staff was also kind but food!!! How can chicken Britto be filled with liquid? I thought they put soup in the wrap. :( not cheap & costs 6.50 Euro. Waste of my money. If you want ti order Britto, you must look for a bib first.
google avatar

Mohammed G.

Yelp
Fantastic Quesadillas, Tacos, and Nachos. Authentic and solid Mexican food. Absolutely love it.
google avatar

Geoff B.

Yelp
This is one of the best Mexican spots in Europe. Its so hard to find "real" Mexican food over here and this place is on the top spots. A little hole-in-the-wall joint with a simple menu and good portions. Been here twice, walked away happy both times.
google avatar

Daniel S.

Yelp
Love this place: great food and nice atmosphere! Sorry guys, have to update this post: I wrote this 3h ago. Since then I went for a walk with my wife and we stopped there to get a margarita. Did I mention that they also have awesome tasting margaritas?! My wife said I came out of this place like a kid out of a toy shop..... God, I love the smell in that place! Smells like warm corn tortillas!!!

Yelp
My fellow Americans: Fear not, for decent Mexican food can be found in Berlin. *Just so you know*, there are some things that will be different. For instance, if you expect rice in your burrito, you WILL be disappointed. Well, basically, if you expect anything in your burrito besides meat and beans, you will be disappointed. And as per Berlin Mexican fare, you will have one helluva time trying to eat your burrito if you expect to pick it up and shovel it in. I don't know what it is about utensils here, but people love 'em, can't eat without 'em. The owner (who is from El Paso, TX) knows this and caters to his audience. Respect. The guacamole is super fresh but not spicy, and they fry their own tortilla chips from the tortillas they buy, i.e., they aren't like those crazy "tortilla" chips that are Doritos knockoffs you can buy at a getränke. My tinga con polle burrito's chicken had some really nice smokiness, but my man's barbacao burrito was reaaaalllllly tasty. Mmm. Expect Coronas and Bohemias, tequila and enchiladas. If you're yearning for the Tex-Mex you might find in the states, well, you'll still be wanting. But Maria Bonita serves up good portions with great flavors. Tip: if you want to sit at a table, your only option is to sit outside on the picnic benches. Only stools inside. Or take it to go!
google avatar

Yelp
Maria Bonita in Prenzlauer Berg is quite good for authentic Mexican. As a Southern Californian and Mexican food devotee living in Berlin- Maria Bonita succeeds at satisfying that in-born urge us Californians have all come to know. Put it this way- Maria Bonita could easily compete with some of the more popular/tasty Mexican options in Los Angeles. In comparison to the ordinarily dismal 'Mexican' restaurants in Berlin (and Europe in general), that's damn good. I was a regular here during my time in Berlin. Having a Corona + lime with a carnitas burrito was always nice change of pace from döners and Beck's! Much, much better than the ever-popular Dolores!
google avatar

Daniel A.

Yelp
Some people say it's the one of best Mexican they've ever had, so I had to check what it's all about, this one is a really small place with simple but good food. To me there was nothing special about it - drinks are very expensive and no toilet - which means they want you to sit, eat and leave.. There are not so many seats around so I get it... The dish was very big and I could barely finish, but it had a pile of raw onions on top which took me a minute to get over the shock (as a person who doesn't like raw onions) I must say, all my other friends (4 of them) were really impressed and 2 even ordered one more :)
google avatar

Peter H.

Yelp
Good food. Great Margaritas. Latin music. Short trip to mexico with authentic food ( I can tell as I often was there). Just ordering and sitting at the table and been asked to pay because it makes it easier (we were only two people there) and after that no more service. Go get cutlery or salsa yourself. That didn't make us feel welcome. And it's not difficult to smile.
google avatar

Erin B.

Yelp
I believe this place is owned by the same people as Santa Maria & Maria Peligro and though they are all serviceable, I see that they are all trying to suit different markets Maria Peligro -larger space, more upscale Santa Maria - tight space with open kitchen, great bar, taco tuesdays Maria Bonita - cheap take-out Mexi at a very small restaurant with counter I rate them- Santa Maria - far & away the best. It's the closest approximation we've found to Mexican food with favorites like the chilaquiles & 1 euro taco tuesdays & tequila. It can be packed, but for good reason. Ay yi yi! Maria Peligro - A lovely space and friendly service impressed us. The prices were a bit strange though. I got the chilaquiles here which were 2 euors more expensive than Santa Maria and they were much less loaded with stuff and came out cold with the egg under done. The burrito was also sadly mis-priced at 9 euro and while the meat was good - it was just a burrito with a smear of guacamole. It desperately needed a side salad/rice/beans. Nice food - just a let-down after our trips to Santa Maria. Maria Bonita - we tried out this down and dirty space, but again the prices were peculiar. While it is supposed to be the more take-out/cheap, the plates were just kinda sloppy and free add-ons at the other places (habanero salsa is smoky goodness) cost extra here. Another disappointment, my huevos rancheros were served with the quesadillas completely under the eggs & sauce so I had to eat it with a knife and fork and just have soggy quesadillas at the bottom. This is nto how that dish works.

A B.

Yelp
good place for Tacos - the food I sampled tasted really good! decent place to sit outside bad place to eat inside, and there are no bathrooms either. For the super basic setting it's definitely not a cheap eatery - chips/guacamole for 8€?
google avatar

Quang D.

Yelp
We had the carnitas and carne asada tacos with chips and salsa. They had good flavor. It didnt come with all the fixings like I am used to but it was a nice quick spot to eat. I would come again.
google avatar

Andrew W.

Yelp
The best place I have found in Berlin for Mexican food. Not as good as the stuff where I grew up(southern California), but considering where I am now, Maria Bonita. They do need to have a better Tequila selection and clean up a little. A scrappy upstart restaurant doesn't have to remain slightly grungy. The service is friendly and the menus are in German and English(for those ex-pats who can't seem to learn Deutsch). Ask for the habanero salsa if you want some heat. It's kind of a creeper. I come here about 2x a month. See you there!
google avatar

Chris B.

Yelp
First time I went here, I was craving authentic Mexican food. For some reason it's difficult to find good Mexican food in Berlin. I had some vegetarian tacos with guacamole. They were fantastic. Seriously. It was like nourishment for my soul. Second time I went here, I just had a few Euros to burn, so I got a margarita to go. Best invention ever, in my opinion. Third time I went here, it was 9:50 PM and they wouldn't serve me tacos because they close at 10. Seriously?! Lame. Basically Maria Bonita is a 5-star Mexican dive, with 2-star business hours. Hence, 3 stars.
google avatar

Mallory P.

Yelp
Fantastic food, hands down. Authentic Mexican taqueria style food to be taken home or eaten there. I had read about this place in the New York Times and being a native Californian, was intrigued to see what a German version of Taqueria food could taste like. We were not disappointed. While not totally mirroring the average taco or burrito found in coastal California, the food was fantastic and you could tell they added a bit of German flair to their burritos and tacos as many of the carne asada options had been sprinkled with bacon - but definitely NOT complaining about it. We picked up the food to go, but saw that while the place was small, the storefront had small tables that you could sit and eat at while watching the world go by. Mexican food in Germany is borderline at best, but even in the context of Californian Mexican food, this place is AWESOME.
google avatar

Alex K.

Yelp
It's excellent, authentic Mexican food in a delightfully dive-y joint with pink walls and Corona beer - served properly with a lime - as well as great margaritas. It could almost be in Los Angeles. The only thing that was maybe a little off were the corn chips which were thinner than normal. Considering other Mexican joints in Germany actually try and pass off kidney beans and passion fruit margaritas as authentic Mexican fare, the fact this place exists boggles the mind. Real carnitas with properly cooked pork, real tacos, salsa - and it's cheap. If you need your Mexican food fix it's good to know this place is here. I feel at peace now.
