Maria-Theresien-Platz is one of those places in Vienna where you naturally stop and just look around. The square is wide, elegant, and surrounded by stunning architecture on all sides. The twin buildings of the Kunsthistorisches Museum and the Natural History Museum face each other perfectly, creating a very balanced and grand setting. At the center stands the statue of Empress Maria Theresa, adding to the charm and sense of history. The open space, landscaped gardens, and impressive buildings make it a lovely area to stroll through or take a short break while sightseeing. Simple, beautiful, and very Viennese—this square is definitely worth a visit.

This square is a carefully staged urban square that translates the imperial worldview of the Habsburg Empire into space. At its center stands the monument to Empress Maria Theresa, flanked symmetrically by the Kunsthistorisches Museum and the Naturhistorisches Museum. Together, they project a claim to imperial legitimacy grounded not only in dynastic power, but in culture, knowledge, and rational order. The square functions as an open-air declaration that the Habsburgs ruled the world through learning and artistic achievement, not merely through military force. Its location beside the Hofburg Palace reinforces this message. Imperial authority is shown extending beyond the palace walls into institutions of scholarship and public education, suggesting that power is sustained through intellectual and cultural stewardship.

Its one of Vienna's most impressive squares, surrounded by magnificent museums and historic buildings. The centerpiece, the statue of Empress Maria Theresa, commands attention, while the open space is perfect for strolling, taking photos, or enjoying the vibrant atmosphere.

This spot in the heart of Vienna is one of my absolute favorites! My sister and I visited as part of our DIY Before Sunrise film locations tour, and it was absolutely gorgeous—the architecture and landscaping are stunning. It’s definitely a must-visit if you’re in Vienna. There are so many charming corners that are perfect for cute photos! It can get quite busy on weekends, so I’d recommend going on a weekday for a more relaxed experience.

Visited this place and was really impressed. It’s a great spot for taking photos, especially of the statue, which looks very amazing in person. The atmosphere makes it enjoyable to walk around and capture some nice shots. Definitely worth a visit if you enjoy photography.

What a great place to discover on such a beautiful day. Very well maintained and it sits between the two big museums, Kunsthistoriches and Naturalhistorisches. More of an opportunistic visit than a planned one, but a great statue to see nonetheless.

Between the twin museums you will find a statue of the Empress Maria Theresia, a very famous personality of the Austrian history! First woman to access the throne, she supported the arts, reinforced the economy and the military status of the empire. Strong headed, she married for love and had 16 children, the most famous of all being Marie Antoinette (wife of French king Louis XVI and beheaded during the French Revolution).

Located between the Naturalhistorisches & Kunsthistoriches museum. It's a great area that nice for catching up with a coffee or enjoying the weather. It's well maintained and you can walk to Museumquartier which is right across the street.
