Convivial market cafe offering traditional pub offerings plus beer & wine in warm environs.
"At Borough Market, the early bird gets the fry-up. Although Maria’s Market Cafe serves until late afternoon, come in the morning before stalls open, when the tourist throng hasn’t reached fever pitch. The wipe-clean tablecloths and plastic bottles of red and brown sauce give it a caff feel, and the food is hearty, satisfying stuff. Our go-to is a soft, floury roll with sausage and crispy-edged bubble and squeak." - heidi lauth beasley, jake missing, daisy meager, sinead cranna, rianne shlebak
"At Borough Market, the early bird gets the full English. Although Maria’s Market Cafe serves until early afternoon, come in the morning before stalls open. The wipe-clean tablecloths, fake flowers in old bean tins, and plastic bottles of red and brown sauce give it an old-school caff feel. And the food is wholesome, nap-inducing stuff. If you don’t fancy going all in on a fry-up, we’re big fans of the soft, floury roll with juicy sausage and crispy-edged bacon too. " - heidi lauth beasley, rianne shlebak, sinead cranna
"At Borough Market, the early bird gets the fry-up. Although Maria’s Market Cafe serves until early afternoon, come in the morning before stalls open. The tourist throng hasn’t reached fever pitch and you’re likely to eavesdrop on the wonderful group of women who run this tight ship as they catch up with regulars. The wipe-clean tablecloths, fake flowers in old bean tins, and plastic bottles of red and brown sauce give it an old-school caff feel. And the food is hearty, satisfying stuff. Our go-to is a soft, floury roll with juicy sausage and crispy-edged bubble and squeak. Ketchup or brown sauce is up to you. " - Daisy Meager
"Borough Market is panoply, Borough Market is international, Borough Market is tourism; Borough Market is workplace, Borough Market is local, Borough Market is community. Come to this longstanding caff, order a bubble and bacon sandwich, and understand that this place contains multitudes." - Ed Smith
"The best way to enjoy Maria’s Market Cafe is the best way to enjoy Borough Market: get there early, preferably on a weekday, when there’s fewer tourists around, and get a feel for the history of the place, where there’s been a market in some shape or form since the 12th century. At Maria’s, visitors can enjoy all manner of things inside a pillowy bap, including lamb, liver, and wild game sausage. Still, the fried breakfasts – particularly the ones with chips – are among London’s most refined examples of the genre, which here hinges on quality ingredients, positioned elegantly on a plate. Before Maria’s there was Borough Cafe, which opened round the corner on Park Street in 1961. The original caff was where the eponymous Maria Moruzzi grew up and later worked, alongside her parents who opened the place, before they had to give it up. When they opened their stall in the market, this time with Maria in charge, she naturally put her name on it. Although its founder has since hung up her apron, Maria’s is still a brilliant place to enjoy a slightly fancier fry-up, rooted in decades of love, care and family tradition." - Isaac Rangaswami
