The 13 Best Restaurants In Borough Market - London - The Infatuation

"At Borough Market, the early bird gets the fry-up. Although Maria’s Market Cafe serves until late afternoon, come in the morning when the tourist throng hasn’t reached fever pitch. Wipe-clean tablecloths and plastic bottles of red and brown sauce give it a caff feel, and the food is hearty, satisfying stuff. Our go-to is a soft, floury roll with sausage and crispy-edged bubble and squeak." - heidi lauth beasley, jake missing, daisy meager, sinead cranna, rianne shlebak

The 15 Best Breakfasts In London

"At Borough Market, the early bird gets the full English. Although Maria’s Market Cafe serves until early afternoon, come in the morning before stalls open. The wipe-clean tablecloths, fake flowers in old bean tins, and plastic bottles of red and brown sauce give it an old-school caff feel. And the food is wholesome, nap-inducing stuff. If you don’t fancy going all in on a fry-up, we’re big fans of the soft, floury roll with juicy sausage and crispy-edged bacon too. " - heidi lauth beasley, rianne shlebak, sinead cranna

Maria’s Market Cafe Review - London Bridge - London - The Infatuation

"At Borough Market, the early bird gets the fry-up. Although Maria’s Market Cafe serves until early afternoon, come in the morning before stalls open. The tourist throng hasn’t reached fever pitch and you’re likely to eavesdrop on the wonderful group of women who run this tight ship as they catch up with regulars. The wipe-clean tablecloths, fake flowers in old bean tins, and plastic bottles of red and brown sauce give it an old-school caff feel. And the food is hearty, satisfying stuff. Our go-to is a soft, floury roll with juicy sausage and crispy-edged bubble and squeak. Ketchup or brown sauce is up to you. " - Daisy Meager

London’s Best Italian Caffs, According to Caffs Not Cafes Instagram | Eater London

"The best way to enjoy Maria’s Market Cafe is the best way to enjoy Borough Market: get there early, preferably on a weekday, when there’s fewer tourists around, and get a feel for the history of the place, where there’s been a market in some shape or form since the 12th century. At Maria’s, visitors can enjoy all manner of things inside a pillowy bap, including lamb, liver, and wild game sausage. Still, the fried breakfasts – particularly the ones with chips – are among London’s most refined examples of the genre, which here hinges on quality ingredients, positioned elegantly on a plate. Before Maria’s there was Borough Cafe, which opened round the corner on Park Street in 1961. The original caff was where the eponymous Maria Moruzzi grew up and later worked, alongside her parents who opened the place, before they had to give it up. When they opened their stall in the market, this time with Maria in charge, she naturally put her name on it. Although its founder has since hung up her apron, Maria’s is still a brilliant place to enjoy a slightly fancier fry-up, rooted in decades of love, care and family tradition." - Isaac Rangaswami

Delicious breakfast. Really tasty, very generous portions. Excellent value for money. Hayley, Laura and all the team are really lovely and helpful. Speedy friendly service. Really good to have vegan options for English breakfast and vegan burger too, not enough places do this. Great setting in the heart of Borough Market. Nice lively vibe. Loved it so much I went back 2 days straight. Highly recommended, looking forward to next time already! Oh and it's King Charles' and Queen Camilla's favourite caff, marked by royal assent! Thanks again

Google
Maria’s Market Cafe is a lovely little spot tucked away between the hustle and bustle of Borough Market—a real hidden gem! The menu serves up comforting, no-frills British classics that hit the spot, and the atmosphere feels authentically local, with views of the Shard and London Bridge just around the corner. While the bacon was a touch overcooked and the iced coffee could’ve been fresher (and fuller!), the overall experience was still great—especially considering the reasonable prices for central London. Hopefully they’ll have Cracked Black Pepper next time! Fantastic value, warm vibes, and a spot I’ll definitely be coming back to soon!X

The food was decent, but the service was disappointingly slow. Despite the restaurant not being crowded, we had to wait around 25–30 minutes for just two English breakfasts. We also requested some salt, but no one followed up or returned with it. On a positive note, I was impressed to see a vegetarian option for the English breakfast — a thoughtful addition for non-meat eaters. Overall, it wasn’t a worst experience, but the service definitely needs improvement.

Google
Wow! What a beauty of a cafe neatly tucked inside Borough Market. Very good prices for London and the quality of the food was exceptional. Lovely staff and friendly too, cup of tea £2.50 for a large cup!

Google
The saving grace here was the bacon. Although after requesting well done, the request was not executed. Staff were about 15 and useless to be fair, at least there giving the kids ago. Hope there paying them right. Very expensive too all in. Full English minus the beans no offer of toms and a tea in a paper cup £18.60 oooft. Nah soz ! Go find Terry’s round the corner for a premium full English.

We first saw Maria’s in Somebody Feed Phil, And it not only lives up to it, but I think I just had the best Bacon and Scrambled eggs ever. The staff were nice, and the food came by the time we settled on the table.

Google
This little cafe in the middle of Borough Market is amazing! I'm used to rude London service, but these guys are so friendly and helpful and pleasant! They gave me a stool to put my backpack on, some extra biscuits that I didn't even ask for, and they were pleasant and helpful. Great coffee too. I definitely recommend going here - it's a breath of fresh air!

Google
One of the best cooked breakfasts I've had! Visited on a quiet morning and it is really atmospheric sitting in the middle of the market, great for people watching. All the staff were smiley and friendly.

Yelp
I am a regular visitor of Borough Market in London. Last Saturday, we were very disappointed in the coffee that Maria's Market Café served. Their Americano Coffee tasted like dirty hot water. I complained and the café owner disputed that there was anything wrong with the taste. I requested refund and would simply leave. The owner initially refused. Then after 5 minutes of arguing he begrudgingly agreed to refund me. The crowing glory of terrible service was that my refund was given to me as a pile of loose change ... later I realised that the owner shortchanged

Yelp
Food is FABULOUS here The portions are huge and always fresh and hot What more do you need for breakfast, brunch or lunch... Staff are a ton of fun, engaging and super friendly We get our Bacon Butty fix every trip to London. Great cups of tea too mmmmmm.

Yelp
Excellent food, excellent service and hospitality! Great place to enjoy some hearty breakfast or lunch. Staff is very friendly and family friendly! Just visiting London, but I definitely would be back and highly recommend!

Yelp
Maria's Market Cafe's food and ambiance is almost as great as the service! The most adorable and admirable waitress / hostess by the name of Hailey was an absolute gem! She was helpful, prompt, engaging and attentive! Oh yes, and the Americano was nearly as delicious as her delightful personality. 5/5 from this American in London!

Yelp
Centrally located in Borough Market, specializing in different meats- the lamb bap was chosen by one in our group and the meat itself was wonderfully juicy but the sandwich was basic and lacked flavor. Meat needed more seasoning and sandwich needed more contrasting flavors, something acidic rather than just arugula. They have a few meat-blend burgers on the menu that sound great. One of the few spots in the market with seating available!

Yelp
We popped in for a quick breakfast during our first run at Borough Market. The menu seems fairly straight-forward, but as an American, I was left scratching my head. What, exactly, is a "bubble"? We have many things that'd go along with that phrase where I'm from, but none of them seemed like they'd be a match for a breakfast cart. Not knowing, and too timid to ask, we just ordered the breakfast plate that most appealed to us - egg, black pudding and bacon. Sign me up! The food came out quickly, though we had to kind of hover in order to hear the friendly lady working the register call it out. I did appreciate the portion size - especially of the black pudding, which is something we can only find in the smallest of quantities back home - though I thought that something on the plate - either the bacon or the egg - was super salty. Still, it was a good, quick breakfast, and gave us the energy we needed to sustain through lunch. The dining area can get a bit cramped, especially if you have large groups of people trying to squeeze in to a table in the "courtyard" (there were several there, when we were, and a couple more trying to get in as we were trying to get out). The service, as I said, was friendly, and I can't ever fault any food place for getting my food to me piping hot and with a quickness.

Yelp
If you are in need of quick, unhealthy, filling breakfast/lunch, here is the place. At the center of the market, you will be able to enjoy a squeak and bubbles, traditional english dish. It's made out of a soft bun, a roasted meat (sausage for me) and something like a roasted chunky potato mash. Not subtle but sublime. Amazing affect on hungover as well. You will also be able to eat a proper english breakfast with eggs or black pudding, beans, toast, bacon, hot beverages. Big plus: it's cheap (around £5), people here are really nice, it's quick, you can sit at a table...

Yelp
Exciting menu! Tried the Wild Sausage sandwich Next to the Shard. Lots of food options in Borough Market. Glad I found Maria's. One of my bookmarked must-try restaurants!

Yelp
Located inside Borough Market, Maria's Market Cafe serves up typical English-style breakfast fare and was recommended to us by a couple of locals. The line was consistently long on a Saturday morning, but I didn't mind the wait because it bought us some time to translate the English food slang. So you don't have to feel as dumb as I did, this should get you started: Bap = sandwich Bubble = potato & cabbage hash Rocket = arugula The Liver, Bacon, Onion, Rocket with Mustard Mayo Bap and a side of Black Pudding was definitely big enough to share. Salty, savory, proteiny, carby, greasy, perfectly fried-up-- it was everything I needed after a night of too many pubs. My only regret is that afterwards I was too full to completely indulge in all the other delicious offerings at Borough Market. Make this your last stop at the market!

Yelp
Great place for a filling, British breakfast! It's a little pop-up cafè in Borough Market that only has a handful of tables outside and is run by one lady behind the counter. There seemed to be an endless combinations of different breakfast plates with a lot of British classics. Overall, the service was quick and friendly, the prices were pretty cheap, and the food was delicious and filling. I'd definitely recommend this place for breakfast!

Yelp
Bacon butties, bubble and squeak, this place has everything you want from your traditional British greasy spoon! Being home, I needed a bacon butty and a cup of tea! It was calling my name. So, finding Maria's in the middle of Borough Market was perfect. Needless to say on this cold December morning it was packed, so much so they were out of bread and baked beans, not that it matter to me, I wanted a bacon butty with egg on a bap (translated for Americans to English thick cut bacon, fried egg, put in a buttered bread roll) and a hot cup of english tea to wash it down. I got exactly that. It hit the spot indeed. Yes it may be just a nostalgic notion, but I was a happy camper, and Maria's delivered the goods. I would definitely swing by again if I was at the Market, as it was fast and greasy perfection!

Yelp
Who would have thought that a traditional greasy spoon would become a rarity in London?! So happy to be taken to Maria's for a sit down lunch - sometimes a plate of bacon and egg with a side of bubble'n'squeak just beats the poshest selection of organic produce. As always, the idea of a fry up beats reality, but I still loved every moment and every bite of it.

Yelp
Can not believe there was nothing on Qype on Maria's Caf. Maria Moruzzi's parents opened Borough Café on Park Street in 1961. Maria began working there as a seven-year-old and has worked there ever since. I go for the bubble and squeak, which I can never make as good as hers. Do not expect anything fancy, this is a great greasy spoon with heritage.

Yelp
No matter how much of a traveler you think you are, my buddy John has you beat. He has covered all 50 states with his family, getting his elementary school age youngest into every one. Plus, most of Europe. When he said, eat at the Maria's in the Bourough Market, I put it on my list. In a sea of great, artisan made cheeses, breads and meat, most of which you can try, is Maria's. After having 100 nibbles of food, I was ready to eat. There are lots of other sandwiches and full-meal-eats available, but Maria's is unique in that it has a tables to sit down. John had said the breakfast was great--but we were there at lunch. They seem to serve breakfast all day, but I'd already had a British breakfast, with bubble and beans. So, I tried the pork loin steak with brandy chutney. The sandwich was on this big, hand made roll. The roll itself was great. Very soft and tasty. The pork was a thin strip if meat, not unlike Canadian bacon but tasting like pork loin. The chutney made the whole thing. The pork had been grilled. It's hard to commit to an entire meal in among so many great places to sample and get interesting food. Other stalls, without seating, had meat pies and mash, salt beef, venison burgers and so much more. But if you want breakfast or to sit and linger with your food, Maria's is a solid choice.

Yelp
Excellent greasy spoon in the middle of borough market. Go for a fry up with everything! Friendly service and reasonably priced. A breath of fresh air compared to the trendy eateries in the rest of the market

Yelp
Monty Python once said "...there's egg and bacon; egg, sausage and bacon; egg and spam; egg, bacon and spam; egg, bacon, sausage and spam; spam, bacon, sausage and spam; spam, egg, spam, spam, bacon and spam; spam, sausage, spam, spam, bacon, spam, tomato and spam." Maria's Market Cafe has a similar approach to menu planning. No spam, but a LOT of bacon, bubble and black pudding, and complex variations thereof. If you are a salad enthusiast, or a veggie, look away now. Maria's is buried underneath the arches in Borough Market, and it's the real deal. Food is served piping hot, having been created by the eponymous Maria in seconds. Good portions, no-nonsense service, and it's all cheap as chips. Bacon, egg, black pudding and bubble, plus a can of coke? £4.80 - and absolutely delicious. You don't want to eat this stuff every day, but from time to time - particular if one is in recovery mode - this is just the ticket...

Yelp
World Food vs Cockney Food... You can keep your chorizo in ciabatta, Monmouth coffees and fancy pants olives. Where's the real food in Borough Market? I'm talking food to feed the famished, not food to end up at the end of a preposterous Nikon lens of a foodie tourist. The answer is Maria's For half the price of a free-range ostrich and rocket poshwich you can get a superbly satisfying Bacon, Cheese and Bubble in a Bap with Brown Sauce that will make your belly sing. Proper London food, served with an 'alrite my darlin' and eaten on paper gingham tablecloths. London wins.

Yelp
As the name suggests, this cafe is (more or less) an open air affair smack in the middle of Borough Market. Borough Market it's self is covered, so you won't be rained on - but it can be windy, so wrap up if it's cold. This is honest British Breakfast grub, slightly dripping in fat and all the better for it. Opening times seem to be a bit erratic, especially on a Monday morning - but then who can blame them? I've only ever had the bacon roll, at a very reasonable £1.50 on my way into work, so can't talk to the full breakfast, but the ever present pan of bubble and squeak on the hob always looks great and everything's freshly cooked. One day, I fully intend to make time for a full breakfast here. One day my friends.

Yelp
Cheap and yummy Thai cafe that also does good simple British cafe food too! The decor is nothing to look at but the atmosphere is fine and a good place for people watching.
google avatar

Peter K.

Yelp
Had the bacon, sausage and egg Bap. Best breakfast sandwich ever. No need for cheese, the pork sausage is meaty and salty (not spicy), the bacon is not US style, but more of a slice of grilled spiral cut ham, and the egg is cooked in glorious grease on the grill. The bread is a light fluffy white roll that soaks up the flavor (not a potato roll). 5 £. Coffee is instant, so u might want to bring that in. SO GOOD!
google avatar

Anthony L.

Yelp
Like others have said: delicious, greasy, grande breakfast sandwiches at a price below that of the posh stands in the market offering much smaller sandwiches -- hardly served with all of the love that Maria dishes out at her classic breakfast cafe.
google avatar

Debbie H.

Yelp
Maria's Market Cafe is in the heart of Borough Market. Head here when everything else feels a little overwhelming. You will find a tasty steak bap, a good mug of tea and a warm smile. Exactly what you need for a market lunch.
google avatar

Helen E.

Yelp
Yep, Tom E said it perfectly. The bubble and cheese roll is a top (woohooooo, CHEEEAP) comfort food in the midst of this confusing posh market, which though interesting, smells too overwhelmingly of cheese and sells insanely expensive small pies which I find very disconcerting in their tiny, dense (often filled with deer) expensiveness.

Chris T.

Yelp
Was very disappointed with this place. The food was basic, poorly prepared and served. Considering the range of option around about in the market this is one to avoid

Yelp
Spotted this unassuming little place in a tight corner of Borough Market the other week. Among the over-priced stalls that surround it, Maria's Caff is bang on. Good food*, good price and Maria herself is a bit of a character! I had the cheese + bubble and squeak bap; who knew it made such a tasty little bite!? Will be back if I'm in the area again. *as previously mentioned, nothing fancy but tasty all the same :)

Yelp
I have been to this place a couple of times but I have always had the egg and bacon sandwich. I always end up buying, hopefully next time I can resist it and try other things on their menu
