Shelter Island Bakery Owner Marie Eiffel Is Accused of Abuse

"Marie Eiffel Market has some barriers to entry. Like the prices, which some local Shelter Islanders (and even some wealthy summer visitors) have lately started to think are extreme. The lobster roll is $45, a pint of berries recently hit double digits — steep for an island that likes to think of itself as the sleepy inverse of the Hamptons. And then there is Marie Eiffel herself, the bawdy Frenchwoman who owns the place. Regular customers can’t help notice her habit of screaming at young employees and making sexual remarks to customers. But — well, she is French, and the croissants are really good, and the roast chicken is the thing for takeout dinner. Plus where else on the island can one sit with an iced coffee on a dock and watch sailboats bobbing in a picturesque harbor?" - Ezra Marcus

Good local restaurant and market. Good quality food. Very few tables. Some outside on back deck facing harbor.

Cute little harbor side cafe/grab and go store. The bakery items are fresh and you can see the staff constantly putting out new things from the kitchen. It was a little chaotic in there, super busy, with tons of people waiting for their food, but the food came out quickly. You can grab your order and sit at the outdoor deck which was right on the harbor. The table and chairs are bare bones. You clean your own tables and there’s no service out there. The highlight was the peach tart tartin - which is huge and meant for 2 (or 3) and it was delicious flaky crust and the fruit was caramelized to perfection

Food was pretty good, simple but quite a few nice options for breakfast. Something for everyone. They roast La Colombe coffee, which we enjoyed! Lots of bees outside on the dock area so we ate inside but felt the inside could be a little more elevated/cleaner given the concept and price point. Would be a great place to pick up some provisions if you’re staying in a house on the island!

We had lunch there as we heard that it was a great place to eat. I was not disappointed at all! We all had sandwiches et it was really good. The owner Marie was very friendly with us same as the staff. I would totally recommend this place if you want a great lunch!

For the price of a restaurant entrée you don’t get much; small portion, average quality, all to be picked up at the counter when they call your name. Nothing special. The view out back is the best part, but you can get the same thing for free sitting on a park bench next door (where they send you to use the public restroom). I spent $22 on crab cakes on greens (which I paid $6 extra for) and it was just a takeaway container filled with two sauce containers, maybe a handful of mixed greens, and two little crab balls (no bigger than a golf ball). To think that for $16 they just throw those two little balls in a container with sauce is just awful… it’s hardly an appetizer let alone a meal! Seriously, they’re just fried pieces of nothing. I walked down the street to stars cafe when I was finished and bought myself another lunch. Don’t let yourself be made into a fool; you will get nothing for your money here.

Stopped in for a quick bagel and coffee. Both were delicious! We sat outside on the water and enjoyed the view.

Great food, very nice view when eating outside in the back. A lot of options including vegan. Everyone is wearing masks, but social distancing is more up to customers than it being enforced in anyway.

Very cool spot. Expensive but I guess that’s to be expected. Great food and vibes. Really solid omelet quick service.
