Just another typical overpriced, outdated, local motel that uses the location as a reason to charge so much, however this particular motel is one of the better low-quality "cheap" places in the city. so 3.5 stars. Technically all motels like the Marina Inn should cost NO MORE than $100/night INCLUDING the taxes in fees (meaning the rooms should never go over like $80/night) but again, because of the area.....smh.
What's funny is I wasn't even the one to book this place, it was my grandmother because she insisted on staying in a motel to prep for her hospital stay as opposed to just staying with family across the bridge. So after she mistakenly booked a room in her budget in the TENDERLOIN of all places (she hasn't been in San Francisco in like 7 years and before that, it was another 10+ years since she's been.), I had to help her pick a better place that was still in her price range. The total for 2 nights was like $215 including taxes through one of the booking discount websites, but that was most likely only because she checked in on Labor Day because she needed to be at the hospital in SF the next morning, so the rates were a little lower as opposed to that Friday-Sunday I'm sure. I stayed with her one of the nights to assist with what I can.
Despite it being an overpriced motel, The Marina Inn definitely has a grand nostalgic feel to it. I'm talking like literally, the building is like straight out the early 1900s or late 1800s. I'm thinking more early 1900s like the 20s or 30s judging by the cool wallpaper, old-timer vintage hallways, and green carpeting. They even have a kitchen that seems to come out of the 30s as well, judging by the entry doors and chairs, tables, and windows. You're definitely taking a step back into the past if you're staying here. Cosplay with Old Western costumes, anyone?
The room we slept in had a nice smell upon entry as well, which was nice. It was also pretty spacious, with two beds (one queen one twin). The twin bed was like one of those beds from like creepy movies about little girls being locked away hidden in a secret pink room LOL. And thank heavens that the beds were actually COMFORTABLE and clean! As others complained, yes the temperatures in the rooms is quite high when there are hot days in the city (There's no AC) but our big fan worked quite well (except at night lol). At least the TV had cable channels to take your mind off the heat.
Of course, the bathroom was atrocious and worn down, as is to be expected in these types of motels but at least the hot water worked and the water pressure was normal. There was a REALLY cool huge, circular mirror next to the queen bed that looked like one of those huge mirrors your great-grandmother and great-great grandmother most likely used to brush their long hair ever so slowly while sitting in a chair lmao (Also looked like a 'Mirror, Mirror, On The Wall' set). A big negative would to be that there was NO fridge in the room. Like wtf. All motels should have fridges in the rooms. I'm not sure if all the rooms were like that but ours definitely did not have a fridge nor microwave. I'm guessing there was an actual fridge in the kitchen (I never explored the entire kitchen, just walked by) but there wasn't a huge need to inquire about it. Ice is on the first floor by the vending machines.
The young lady who checked us in was nice, and the other lady who was there at night was pretty nice as well so the service is pretty good. However the cleaning lady I encountered was not nice. I wanted just an extra small towel in the morning, so I saw the cart down the hall and walked down. Mind you, everything is CARPETED so obviously you're not going to hear much footsteps (my shoes were off too lol), this B$#&! had the nerve to rudely claim I was being sneaky and scared her as she was coming out the room and I was approaching the cart. Like excuse you?? You just happened to come out the room you were cleaning at the exact time I pulled up to ask for a towel so you need to stop being stupid. I definitely told her to her face to watch her attitude. She's lucky we were near the front desk, and also I didn't want to lay into her and have a yelling match so early in the morning waking other people.
So overall, for a low-budget motel, it's definitely good enough. Don't come here expecting lavish settings just because on most days it's overpriced lol. And obviously, there's no easy parking (it's SF, get real) so there's no need to even touch on that. Luckily I lucked out on finding street parking just around corner on other side of motel. The area is very residential. Obviously I have a little more quality taste and would wait for good deals on like Days Inns or Holiday Inns, but the Marina Inn is solid for simply needing to place your head temporarily. I would definitely not stay here myself for anything over $100 total that's for sure, unless I needed it for quick booty calls lmao. But I have better places for that :)
