Art and Culture in Vancouver

"Vancouver has several beautiful Art Deco pieces, but if you only have time to visit one, it would be the Marine Building. Exterior reliefs are carved into terra cotta, with images of marine life like crabs and seahorses. Go inside and gawk at the architectural details on the walls, the windows, and even the elevators." - MATADOR_NETWORK

The Marine Building in Vancouver is a stunning example of Art Deco architecture. Built in 1930, it features intricate marine-themed details, beautiful brass elevators, and an opulent lobby. Though it’s primarily used as an office space, the impressive lobby is open to visitors. A must-see for architecture enthusiasts!

Architecturally brilliant. You don't get rhis character from the built environment any more anywhere. This is a beautiful space, so ecstatic that it has been retained in it's original style. The craftsmanship would have to be appreciated by most and surely will be a part of the walking tour that anyone visiting Vancouver must take in. Loved even just walking through the foyer and imagining the history of the era.

Amazing architectural interior in the Art Deco style. Make sure to check out the 2nd floor for an awesome viewpoint.

If you love Art Deco, pop into this 1930s office building near the water. It’s open to the public to see the architecture inside. Most of the design is in the lobby and don’t sleep on going inside one of the elevators. There are a few shops in the basement. Restrooms are in the basement but they aren’t open to the public unless you ask a shop owner to let you in.

This location is the most beautiful building in Vancouver. It was built almost 100 years ago in Art Deco style. You can visit here free but should remember that Business Center works before 5 pm on weekdays only. Feel free to climb on the second floor by the elevator. In the Christmas season, the hall has elegant decorations.

This building is fabulous, take a look around the lobby and enjoy.

Beautiful iconic art deco building. Well preserved and maintained. A must see for architecture nerds in town. At ground floor there is a bar and a coffee place both worth the visit also.

Google
Wonderful art deco building with a "must see" entrance lobby. Well preserved original features, such as the phone booths, and the detailing make it a pure delight. There is a coffee shop by the lobby so one can stop to enjoy the ambience. Highly recommended so do not let the external refurbishment put you off going inside.

Yelp
Went there under renovation, but the side decor is still able to be seen alongside the building. Very iconic, but wish it was not under construction

Yelp
One of the few historic art deco buildings standing amongst all the skyscrapers and believe it or not this was one of them in 1833. Originally called Marine building is now called The Heritage building. Beautiful marble floors of design, a nice display of old photos coming up on the screen, really lovely architecture inside and very impressive. So glad we found this place it's easy to pass in a blink as there are so many restaurants on the outside it's hard to tell that this place was actually a very prominent piece of History

Yelp
This edifice is an incredible, unique example of Art Deco style. Construction started in 1929 and completed 16 months later in 1930 after the Great Depression began. Unfortunately, the owner subsequently took a bath selling the vacant building at half price! Thankfully, it has survived all this time to be enjoyed today. This landmark truly needs to be explored and every small detail appreciated. I attempted to schmooze our way to a viewing from the top floor. However, the attorney we met in the elevator explained we could only appreciate the view from their office for $225/hour. I offered to pay by the minute but shockingly, he was neither amused nor agreeable.

Yelp
This building is absolutely gorgeous! The Art Deco building has an underwater theme that actually isn't corny with designs. Pay close attention to ever detail! You have to look closely! Here are some info you should know: - It only open during business hours, so it's closed on weekends and at night. - Your limit is up to the 2nd Floor - Yes, This is the Daily Planet in Smallville. - It's conveniently located by the Coal Harbor near the convention center. Lots of food options nearby so you can definitely stick it into your schedule to see...it's worth it! - try to look at the building from outside and all the way up...lots of details there too! ENJOY!

Yelp
The Marine Building is Vancouver's art deco delight. Built in the Great Depression, the sky scraper ended up going way over budget and then selling for less than half of what it cost to build. But that's doesn't show in the beauty of the building. The lobby and elevators of the Marine Building are adorned with myriad mystical sea creatures. Sea horses, snails, seaweed, and crabs crawl over the walls next to intricately inlaid wood. The great brass elevators evoke an elegant pre-WWII era. Although the Marine Building once towered over downtown and the waterfront, it's now dwarfed by the Bentall towers. But the gorgeous design and decor still rises above all other buildings downtown. For anyone needing a time-escape in Vancouver, I strongly suggest walking on in and taking an elevator up to a randomly picked floor.

Yelp
The Marine Building is a must see spectacle for both tourists and Vancouverites alike. And it costs you nothing! The architecture, specifically the ceiling- is incredibly detailed and work of art. The pictures posted give you a pretty good idea of this! It's amazing to think The Marine building first opened in 1930! Take the stairs up to catch a closer look and for a great photo or two. There's also s framed photo of what Burrard Street looked like back in the 1930's. George Costanza would be proud.

Yelp
The most decorative Art Deco Building in Vancouver, this is a pure joy to visit. Most travel guides to Vancouver encourage tourists to visit this beautiful tower and marvel at it inside and out, but few locals know that not only is it open to the public it welcomes looky loos with open arms! My suggestion is to head inside and take the elevators to the second floor - that is where the best views of the stunning lobby can be found. An interesting note - the intricate ceiling was carved on site. Spend some time here, delving into its history and fabled connection to the Guinness family (yes, THAT Guinness family) and just soaking up its eerie beauty. You won't be disappointed!

Yelp
Probably one the oldest buildings in Vancouver, and one of the most interesting. If you're an artist, an architecture, a historian, film buff, tourist, or just someone looking for something cool to look at the Marine Building, is it. It's an Art Deco building that has it all, the stained glass, the patterns, and yes the revolving doors. If feels like every inch of this place is covered in details. If the security would let me I would probably sit here an draw sitting on their floor all day but, alas I think they would have a word, or two for me. Photographers looking for some cool shots should probably come here. It's open to the public during the day. Haven't gone to the second floor but I probably should. Yes Smallville, and many other television shows, and movies have been filmed here, and once you go inside you won't blame them. Accessible? Only if you think you can get your wheelchair through a revolving door..I'm sure it maybe be possible if albeit challenging.

Yelp
Any fan of architecture or the marine world has to enter the lobby. Just walk in and you are in one of the most ornate surviving art deco buildings in the world and we have it downtown Vancouver. I want an office in the building I don't know what for BUT I WANT IT....... ok tantrum over. When you're in the neighbourhood drop in.
