This was our second trip to Vieques and I wanted to give Maritza’s a try, as I had read many good reviews. It was a mistake. I reserved a Jeep over 3 months in advance because I know local rental companies run out if you wait too long. Upon arriving at the airport, I called Maritza’s to notify them we were there. A few minutes later, the gentlemen I had just talked to called me back and said, “I had to switch you to a Ford Bronco because of over booking.” I just said ok. Everybody makes mistakes, right? We arrived at the rental office with two other couples from the airport, to find that they both had shiny new Jeeps waiting for them, while we had an extremely beat up Ford Bronco. I just went along with it, as I didn’t want to cause any problems. Maybe these people are just more important than us? As we left Maritza’s, I noticed that they had many Jeeps in their fleet out to the side of the office building. Upon arriving at our rental house, I decided to call them and explained that I was very unhappy with the Ford Bronco, as it had no where near the capabilities of a Jeep. I told them that we like to drive to some beaches that require a higher clearance vehicle, and that is why I had reserved a Jeep. I also informed them that I saw all of the Jeeps beside their building when we were leaving. The lady at Maritza’s responded “We still have like 20 people coming who have reserved Jeeps.” I then asked why it was more important for everyone else to get their Jeep, and it wasn’t important for us to get ours? We are here, on the island after all. Why were we singled out and treated like second-rate customers? She then said that she would try to figure something out. After being on hold for 10 minutes, she said we could come back and switch for the Jeep we had reserved. After six days, we returned the Jeep to Maritza’s. Upon arriving, the man at the counter did not say hello, didn’t ask how everything went… he wouldn’t even look at me. He just asked for my credit card. Was he ashamed of his behavior, or was he trying to make me out to be the bad guy? No apologies. None of the friendly conversation and smiles that we received when we arrived to pick up our substandard vehicle. I have easily rented over 50 vehicles in my life and have never been treated so poorly. If you are considering renting a vehicle from Maritza’s, I would think twice. They are dishonest and should be ashamed of themselves. We will be giving all of our business back to Vieques Car Rental.
