Everything about my stay was great. The location downtown was perfect for walking to lots of attractions. My room was clean and comfortable. But the highlight of my stay was John H our wine tasting host. He was so friendly and knowledgeable. As a single woman traveling alone, he made me feel welcome and comfortable. John H gave me excellent tips on where to go and what to see. His customer service was exemplary. The hotel gets five stars but John H gets 10 Stars!!!

First off - the staff here are fantastic and wonderful. Wine tasting from 5-6? Yes please! The rooms themselves are trash: 1. The beds are terrible. Softest bed i've ever been in, almost impossible to sleep. That said the sheets on the bed were really nice. 2. No sound proofing at all. You hear everything going on, outside your room, and on the floors above and below you. 3. The showers are that half open concept so it doesn't really closed, and so you have cold air blowing on you the whole time you're in the shower. Lastly, and probably most important, the location is great. Right on the edge of the Pearl, and they have a paid and locked lot underneath the hotel.

I had such a wonderful time at this hotel! The rooms are beautiful and spacious, and I had 8 pillows on the bed to snuggle up in as I liked. The staff was so kind and helpful, and shipped the gloves I forgot back to me overnight, so I wouldn't be without them when I got back to Chicago. On top of everything else, you're in walking distance to so many fabulous restaurants, coffee shops, Powell's Books, and an incredible record store, and less than a 10 minute drive to some of Portland's coolest neighborhoods, or to the arboretum! The neighborhood is quiet, the views are lovely, and I felt perfectly safe walking to restaurants and shops by myself at night.

I recently had the pleasure of staying at the Mark Spencer Hotel, and it was an outstanding experience from start to finish. The hotel's charm and elegance are evident the moment you walk through the doors. The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, making me feel right at home. My room was beautifully appointed, blending modern comforts with classic style. The bed was exceptionally comfortable, and the room was equipped with all the amenities I could need, including a well-stocked kitchenette. I loved the thoughtful touches like the complimentary wine hour and the local coffee provided in the room. The location of the Mark Spencer Hotel is unbeatable, right in the heart of downtown Portland. It was so convenient to explore the city's vibrant neighborhoods, fantastic restaurants, and unique shops. The hotel's proximity to public transportation made getting around a breeze. One of the highlights of my stay was the delicious breakfast served each morning. The selection was varied and fresh, providing a perfect start to my day. The hotel's cozy lounge areas were also a great place to relax and unwind after a busy day of sightseeing. Overall, my stay at the Mark Spencer Hotel was nothing short of perfect. The combination of exceptional service, comfortable and stylish accommodations, and prime location make it a top choice for anyone visiting Portland. I can't wait to return!

The amenities were outstanding. The bed was PERFECT! I had a great stay! The Kitchenette was cute and stocked with all necessities. The shampoo/conditioner/soap smelled amazing and were of great quality. I’d definitely stay again if I’m ever in Portland!

Google
The Mark Spencer is a meticulously maintained classic 120 year old hotel. Gracious, sumptuous and as comfortable as a loving grandmother's hug. Large rooms with interesting configurations, which invite relaxing, lingering mornings.|Comfortable bed with fluffy, white bedding. The shower is like an enveloping spring rain, which has to be bad for utility bills, since it was difficult to exit! Clean and well maintained. I am enjoying my stay.

We stayed here for a company holiday party for the convenience of walking to the crystal ballroom (5 minutes or less). This is an older property but very well established, the staff was helpful and gave great information. The parking garage is low ceiling and the turns are sharp but manageable. They have a welcoming complimentary wine and cheese hour from 5p-6pm, thank you!||There are no ice machines on your floor but do have one on the bottom floor!||I would stay here again!

I’ve been staying at this hotel for over ten years now. Location is good minus the zombies that hang out near by but it’s Portland… My one star rating is based off my last experience with the gentleman at the front desk. Hard to call him a gentleman, but I try to be polite. I will just say he was beyond rude and I truly felt like I was being looked down upon. I unfortunately won’t be back unless I know 100% this person no longer is employed with them. He absolutely ruined my day and made me feel like I was trash. Very unfortunate because I really do like this hotel but this man had zero respect for me. I would have stayed a few more nights if it wasn’t for him. I never wish someone to lose their job but this man doesn’t belong in customer service. Beyond that Alissa? The front desk manager was very apologetic and kind I appreciated that.

Yelp
My husband and I stayed here for a night recently with our dog for a little not-too-far-cation. The staff here is amazingly friendly and helpful. We arrived just in time for the complimentary wine & cheese hour, which was a nice surprise. The little sitting area in the lobby was perfect for relaxing with our pup. There are also some snacks and items you might have forgotten for sale at the front desk. There is underground parking that is easy to access from the lobby. We didn't get the pet welcome kit described on the website, but I forgot to ask about it, so no big deal. The location was nice. We did see some people while walking the area around the hotel who were obviously affected by addiction. I probably would have felt unsafe if I was walking alone. We walked to Powell's, our favorite bookstore in the world, and easily picked up a takeout dinner which we enjoyed in the room. Our room had a little kitchenette, which was fully stocked, and the king bed was so comfortable! Our window faced a brick wall, so no view, but it was nice and quiet. I detracted a star for a few little things: There is technically a fitness room, but it's kind of a sad basement room with old machines situation, so, if the fitness room is important to you, keep looking. Second, Mr. Spencer, please be more generous with the towels. Yes, two people can survive with just two towels but having one backup would be nice! The shower control was weird - basically, there was just one control for both temperature and pressure. if you want full pressure, you also have to have full heat, or, if you want to cool it off a bit, you're getting less pressure. I settled for a comfortable temperature and less pressure. I need a cool room when I sleep but either the AC in our room didn't work or I couldn't figure it out, but the room was warm. I called the front desk and the awesome staff brought a fan to the room to keep me cool and saved the day! Last note, if you have your heart set on the coffee shop or cafe, it's not open on Mondays or Tuesdays. That's ok, there are plenty of other great places in the area!

Yelp
I have been staying at the Marc Spencer for 30 years. And it's always been a pleasurable experience. Over the decades of watching it transform from a budget friendly converted boarding house to an absolutely lovely and well appointed full service hotel while still maintaining reasonably priced rooms has been terrific. You can't beat the location. I just right downtown near everything. Yet very quiet. It doesn't have an elaborate restaurant, but it does have some on site provisions. It doesn't have a cocktail lounge, but it does have nightly wine tasting. It doesn't have its own parking garage, but it does have parking options.

Tom O.

Yelp
I liked this hotel for its location, staff, clenliness and ease of use. They are very friendly and will help guests when asked promptly with a smile. It is clean, has comfortable beds and a nice vibe. It looks like an old warehouse or such that was smartly converted to a hotel and they've done a great job modernizing the place. It kind of reminds me of The Palmer House in Chicago only better with larger rooms. Also, it is within a few minutes walking distance to Powell's City of Books - a must visit. The underground parking is tricky if you are in a full size SUV but that is really nit picking. I've stayed here twice and gladly will do it again.

Yelp
We booked the Mark Spencer through AirBnb and we had a lovely experience. For the 2 of us, the hotel had plenty of space in the room. Our bed was a double, but it didn't bother either of us. The front desk service was top notch! They were incredibly helpful with our questions and one of the gentleman even walked us to the light rail so that we could get to our concert at Moda Center without having to pay a large Uber fee (it was $5.60 for an all day pass for Portland's light rail). Service like that is above and beyond my expectations! Each person we encountered was so friendly. We didn't try any of the food or beverages in the cafe, but there were nice options and they offer wine tasting every day. There is also parking in their own garage for $32/night. We felt safe and secure - we highly recommend this hotel and would 100% book again if we come back to Portland!

Yelp
Such a great hotel with a great staff, nice amenities, great little extras and centraly located.

Yelp
Dogs are allowed is my favorite sentence. This hotel being able to accommodate my best friend deserves a 5 star. The managers came after we checked out our room and asked right away if we had any issues during our stay. My BF mentioned that while we left out window open, the smell of the street made it through our room and instantly the manager called it in. I mean, it was our fault we left the window open and told them that was the only thing. We didn't really complained about anything else, yet he still took initiative to handle the situation. The staff has been thoughtful and professional. My dog loved the king sized bed and we got to rent a corner king suite at the very last minute.

Kitty H.

Yelp
We got a last-minute deal through a third party to stay one night during the holidays so we could visit some friends. It worked out great. We requested a King bed and they were able to accommodate us so the three of us (including my six-year-old) were able to snuggly fit in one bed. We were centrally located, just two blocks from Powell's. The best was that parking was only $28 a night so we were able to stash the car in an underground lot and it didn't cost half as much as the room. They had a small but quaint lobby and the whole place had a classy vibe. They had complementary coffee and tea (but only had one black and one green tea since the camomile was out) all day and a free wine (with some crackers and cheese cubes) from 5:00-6:00 in the evening. Breakfast could be purchased at reasonable prices in the morning and we enjoyed some breakfast sandwiches that they heated up in the toaster oven to order. I noticed a few employees also getting breakfast so I knew it must be good. We'll have to check them out in the summer when we can walk around downtown and explore more. Definitely a good value but a very nice place!

Yelp
One of the best hotels I have stayed in!!! Rooms are very spacious and clean!! Alex, the manager at this location is awesome! He was very understanding, helpful and accommodating!! I will recommend this hotel to all my friends and family!!!

Yelp
Great place to stay. Centered in the city in walking distance of restaurants and shops.

Yelp
They charged me $18 for a pack of cashews, they said I ate. But I bring my own cashews to places. While I was fighting with the front desk, Mark Spencer's grandson stole my catalytic converter (inside job). Weeks later a coworker got bedbugs, and charged for cashews there too. Couldn't even get wrestling on the TV, and when the call center elevated it to management they laughed at me and hung up. Out 18 Big ones, and my feelings are hurt. Can't recommend.

Yelp
SERVICE & CHECKIN Due to a delayed flight, I arrived in the middle of the night + had made a booking error... Not the best checkin circumstances. Thankfully this wasn't your typical skeleton crew; the staff went above & beyond to accommodate me. A great first impression by employees with no shortage of smiles or professionalism. Truly a level of hospitality that I've yet to find anywhere else in Portland. They're also pet friendly ($28/night) & offer covered parking ($25/night). Deposit is $50/night with support for tap pay. Late checkout is free. ROOM https://youtu.be/QxK42YNW4H4 Clean & comfortably spacious (for 2) with an elevated modern aesthetic. The room was well-appointed with an array of seating options, ample tabletop space & full size mirrors. Despite the age of this building the infrastructure was also impressive, delivering great lighting & stealthily quiet AC + functional windows. cons: limited storage; workspace chairs lack ergonomics BED Drowning in pillows! The mattress was softer than I prefer but the support was decent. Linens were especially luxe & fresh, topped with a cozy duvet. A comfortable setup guaranteed to deliver quality sleep! The nightstands also provided good utility. BATH A medium size bathroom that pulls no punches on tiling: a glossy marble flooring with a green mosaic shower. You don't see this everyday in the more accessible hotel spaces where grout & tiling receive 2nd-class treatment. The colors & finish felt very regal in this one. Beekman bath products were pre-stocked in the shower & the waters pressure was strong throughout. Towels were sufficiently hefty & their bathrobes have an amazing texture. Cons: smaller shower; limited counter space; bath products weren't fully stocked TV & ENTERTAINMENT Big (50") wall mounted Samsung FHD TV. No mobility from this mount, so best of luck connecting an hdmi device... The channel situation is also chaotic, but there's a cheat sheet available in-room to make sense of it all. WI-FI & CELL RECEPTION Cell towers are relatively close so expect tip-top cellular performance regardless of carrier. Complimentary WiFi is unencrypted... but the throughout was outstanding. --Performance-- Video streaming - good Online gaming - GREAT Video chatting - GREAT --Nerd Stats-- 36-46 Mbps download 47-48 Mbps upload 0% packet loss 11 ms latency 1 ms jitter FOOD & DRINK Contactless DoorDash delivery available. Onsite food offerings include a snack shop behind reception & a (costly) light breakfast available until 11. In-room kitchenette is equipped with microwave, small mini fridge, toaster & coffee bar. Glassware & dishes are also stocked & clean, ready for use! NOISE It can get loud here & it's not the most sound proof of hotels but guests were polite/conscious enough during the 5 days I spent here LOCATION Good proximity to Starbucks, Whole Foods, public transit & all the things. VERDICT It's classy but not stiff or dated & the employees are unbelievably nice (replaced-by-robots-nice). Combine that with the competitive pricing & staying here becomes a no-brainier. I highly recommend this location & look forward to returning for my next staycation! 5/5

Yelp
Some friends of ours recommended The Mark Spencer as a great place to stay, clean and friendly with an awesome location. We were so pleased to find that everything we expected was true. The location was central to all that we wanted to see and experience in Portland, from Powell's to cafes and donut shops, Chinatown to the Waterfront, The Saturday Market to the Art Museum. The room was clean and the mini kitchen made it convenient for making and sharing breakfast and late-night dinners/snacks while we were visiting the city. Staff was efficient, friendly and quick to respond to requests and questions (the need for bedding for the pull-out couch, extra towels). Parking is available onsite, in a garage that has keyed access with in-out priviledges. There is a $25 per night fee for use of the garage, but made it easy and convenient for loading/unloading bags and making quick trips throughout town.

Yelp
I was treated absolutely horrible by one of the employees working the front desk. 100% rude and disrespectful customer service from Anthony. I've been staying at this hotel for over 10 years. I've spent a lot of money here and for some reason I was treated like I was trash. As much as I love this hotel, especially the location I will never give my money to them unless I know Anthony is no longer an employee. I never wish anyone to lose a job but this man has no business in customer service.

Alan D.

Yelp
The hotel was exactly as advertised. The rooms are clean. The staff was pleasant. We stayed in a premium corner king room and it looks just like the pictures. There is a wine tasting from 5-6 daily in the lobby. The hotel is dog friendly. There is a small parking lot under the hotel and overflow across the street. For management: The man who checked us in on Sunday 2/25/2024 was smooth and professional. He had a great demeanor. I'm unsure of his name, but he appeared to be the only one working. Any hotel would be lucky to have him.

Yelp
Ever since Covid hit. I have been looking for accommodations that give me a little more space for times when I might feel more comfortable getting takeout. I knew that would be especially true after an over 10-hour drive from the Bay Area when we just enjoyed our takeout Nong Khao Man Gai in PJ's while watching Coco on the big screen TV. Trying to find that while being centrally located ended up being a bigger challenge than expected as I noticed so many of the rooms available in most of the hotels, I was interested in were really small. Mark Spencer ended up meeting my requirements perfectly, offering a range of rooms from the smaller standard to larger suites to choose from. For only a $40 per night difference, I went for the executive king suite which has a private bedroom plus a living room with a fully equipped kitchen offering dishes, a couple of pots, microwave, and a small stovetop. While we didn't actually cook, I did boil some hot water often for tea and took advantage of those real dishes and real utensils and replated our takeout or leftovers. It probably saved us close to the $40 per night not wasting our leftovers while reducing food waste. I loved that they offer a discount on the parking fee for hybrids. My only complaint was the spaces in the parking garage underneath the hotel were quite small so may be a challenge maneuvering if it is full and we did get blocked with an unattended construction truck at the garage exit. Luckily, we were not in a hurry. Because of Covid, they have discontinued their continental breakfast and afternoon tea and cookies but with so many great options around, it is not a huge inconvenience. They are centrally located just a block away from Powell's City of Books and another block from there to Screen Door's new Pearl District location and so many wonderful restaurants and even a Whole Foods to pick up local Stumptown coffee, chocolates, and jams to bring home. I would definitely choose Mark Spencer again the next time I find myself in Portland.

Yelp
Stayed here for 3 days. This hotel has been great. From the moment I checked in, I felt welcomed. The guy was super nice, along with the Asian lady. She was so friendly and gave me directions to the Portland Zoo. Upon walking into my room, it literally felt like I was walking into an apartment studio. Had a stove, microwave, fridge along with things like plates, silverware, pots and pans. (never used them though). The room was so welcoming and warm, as it was raining and cold. Pillows - 9 of them. These pillows were straight awesome. Attached a picture of them. Not sure why they gave me so much lol, but I loved it. Blankets - Nice and warm. They do get very warm though. Shower - Not the best pressure, but the shower head is great. Loved showers here as the shower head is aggressive, but the building water pressure restricts the shower head they have from being great. They have wine and cheese/crackers daily from 5PM to 6PM daily. How can anyone beat that? This is an absolute plus. Go to any bar around Portland and get a glass of wine. That bar will charge you $12 for it. So this is a major plus. I'll definitely come back to this place every time I come back to Portland. Cheers to this hotel for making my stay A+

J S.

Yelp
Booked via Hotel Tonight and got what you might expect. A room facing a wall--worse yet--a brick wall with some gull poop. Service was not great with one hotel clerk who was pretty surly checking us in. The room had a comfortable bed and bathroom. It was ok for one night only and it's close to Powell's and a shave ice place down the street. Maybe if you pay more you'll get a better room.

Chelle G.

Yelp
We stayed at The Mark Spencer Labor Day weekend and it was nice. The suite big and was very clean. If I return the Portland this is where I'm staying.

Briana R.

Yelp
Everything was great From, the young man in the front to the friendly conversation with the maintenance guy with the beard although only staying one night, it is definitely a vibe for sure. Will recommend and be back myself.!

Itaty F.

Yelp
Hotel was phenomenal. Location was in the heart of down town with the best brunch spots, beer spots, bars and best dining places in town. The customer service and hospitality was unmatched. Super clean, beautiful bathroom with a vanity, which was superb for my skin care and makeup time. Wine tasting from 5-6 was a plus & the cherry on top. They also have Cheryl's breakfast/brunch available for room service which is amazing and convenient. 10/10 would recommend. Staff is all amazing, patient and helpful. Would come back for sure!

Kailani S.

Yelp
Great historical hotel that is stylish with a modern twist, and very clean. We stayed in a corner king bedroom, for 1 night. We had a nice view with large windows overlooking the streets with city view. Cute kitchen area with available dish wear, electric stove, and microwave. The location is great, right in the heart of DT, in the middle of everything. Shops and restaurants all in walking distance. The room was very quiet and peaceful. We really enjoyed our stay here, the bed was comfortable, bathroom was nice, loved the artwork in the hallways. The staff at the front desk were friendly too. We would definitely stay here again.

Matt S.

Yelp
Service - 1 star. Room was 30 minutes late past 4pm check-in. No reasonable excuse was offered. The free coffee was absolutely terrible; no continental breakfast. Directions for turn down service were not covered at check-in and when requested the next day after 12pm they explained that we needed to request before 12pm because housekeeping is done at 2pm, which does not compute because they were clearly still working on our room after 2pm the previous day. I don't appreciate being lied to or having to adapt to their poor staffing issues. Room - 4 star. Other than massive stains in the carpet and cobwebs in the ventilation system, the room was nice and quiet. We would not recommend staying here!

Yelp
My family and I stayed here for trip to Portland. It's conveniently located near Whole Foods for groceries, Powell's books, and lots of coffee shops and restaurants in the Pearl District. When we arrived, we were greeted by the doorman/security who was helpful our entire stay. Checking in was a breeze. We were able to a find wheelchair accessible parking spot in their underground parking lot. We received a second key so that we could scan ourselves in to the other front door to reach the accessible entrance during our stay. Shortly upon arrival to our room, someone came by to deliver another bag of towels and linens for the sofa bed. The room itself was clean spacious for our family of 5. I loved the decor, beds were comfortable and there was a fully stocked kitchenette, although there was not really an area for us to eat, so that was kind of hard. The gym was closed and breakfast was not being offered due to covid. My favorite part of the hotel was the atrium in the basement level. It's so calming with string lights overhead and plants all around. The basement level is also where the laundry, ice machine, hotel offices, and meeting rooms are located. The only downside of staying here is that downtown Portland didn't feel that safe at the time of our visit. On our first day in Portland, we decided to walk around downtown after dinner. Homeless tents were all over the sidewalks and our wheelchair bound son was unable to navigate many of the sidewalks. My other son was also barked at by a homeless man which scared him. The kids refused to walk around downtown after that day, and we ended up taking refuge in the safety of the Mark Spencer whenever we returned from our day out.

Yelp
Synopsis: Dated room with no hot water Dets.: For my birthday weekend, we came to this hotel. The four-star reviews belie and obscure the truth of this place: That it's basically a flop house. Upon entering our room, I hid my disappointment at the florescent lighting and bare bones decor. After unpacking, I decided to shower. The water initially ran cold, which seems normal; however, after five minutes, the water remained cold. I took it on the chin and decided maybe it would get hot later. Reader, it did not. After calling and visiting the front desk, who told us to "run the sink and shower at the same time" to get the water hot, we checked out two days early. (What??? And no, that didn't work.) Avoid this place.

Yelp
The Mark Spencer Hotel manages rooms in the Washington Plaza Apartments around the corner - these apartments are advertised as "economy" living spaces and that is a gracious overstatement. I have been stuck in these apartments for a month and have experienced near daily set-backs such as broken elevators (forcing you to walk up 5 flights of stairs), WiFi outages, shoddy housekeeping, broken showers, stained walls, stained sheets, broken laundry machines, and more! Why would such an upscale hotel even associate with such horrible living conditions? Beyond this "economy" level living, I am constantly amazed at the attitude of Mark Spencer management. When these daily problems occur, management gives a zero-reassurance-shrugged-shoulder response which translates to "we have no information on when it will get fixed so suck it up and stop asking us". Due to this attitude alone I wouldn't recommend staying even in the upscale hotel. I have been forced by my employer to stay here while working away from my home, and it has been beyond disappointing.

Rose N.

Yelp
I wanted to love this historic place. The corner king room was huge! But...there was a coffee maker with no filters. I asked and they said you could get them at the front desk. Do people really steal these that cost maybe a nickel each? The bathroom at first looked good...until you saw grout in the shower that badly needed cleaning as well as the stains around the bottom of the toilet. There's no excuse to pay these prices and not have it spotless. Parking is $32, be aware. I had to utilize it the second night because it was late and I didn't want to try parking that late. The hotel restaurant was closed in the a.m. so bring food.

Maisha R.

Yelp
We chose the Mark Spencer hotel specifically for its downtown location in Portland and the huge hospitality suite with a large table and sitting area, allowing us to spread out and socially distance ourselves to remain safe - despite being vaccinated - during the pandemic as we ordered and brought food in. The accommodations in the three rooms we reserved - the hospitality suite and the two master suites - were wonderful. The master suites were recently renovated and spacious. They had a separate bedroom and a nice sitting area with a well-equipped kitchenette. The hospitality suite had a separate bedroom, one and a half baths, and a huge living/sitting area with a full kitchen decked out with a stove, microwave, refrigerator, and dishwasher. While we certainly weren't cooking, it was great to have the ability to store leftovers and reheat food after it was out in the chilly weather. We appreciated the General Manager's flexibility and graciousness with us as we celebrated our birthdays. The complimentary fine chocolates, sugar cookies, birthday card, and bottles of blueberry champagne were such nice touches! The hotel is in a great spot, just around the corner from Powell's and close to a lot of restaurants with diverse cuisine and several of the food cart pods. I would definitely stay here again. The rates for the master suites were very reasonable and while quite pricey, the hospitality suite met our needs and was worth the value for us during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Yelp
Carpet in lobby is nasty, smell in hotel lobby and in our room was not good, the room size is misleading in pictures, rooms are very small, closet size, can't put any personal things in bathroom because it's so small and no room for anything, mold on bathroom walls, There is no information on their site about charging for parking just says parking available, they charge you $32 a day for parking, they are robbing you blind.

S P.

Yelp
An absolute gem of a place for our family to stay while visiting Portland. It was spacious, centrally located and the service was excellent. Our family looks forward to staying here again.

Lauren H.

Yelp
We had a wonderful stay here, in one of the corner king rooms that's pet-friendly. The kitchenette in the room had more than we expected--a mini fridge, microwave, sink, and small electric range. They also provided a small assortment of dishes, cutlery, and cooking tools. Furniture, bathroom, and bedding were great. Staff were very nice and helpful. Our dog was very comfy during his stay, too!

Yelp
The Gist: A boutique hotel in the Pearl District of downtown Portland, ideal for shopping and dinning. With different types of rooms and suites they offer, they can accommodate the needs of different types of guests. The best part of this hotel is its location, perfect for tourists. Location (5+ Stars) There are many restaurants and shops nearby. + Powell's Books only two blocks away. + Target with a CVS pharmacy only a few blocks away + Stumptown Coffee inside Ace Hotel right across the street. Currently (during the COVID pandemic), takeout only: the takeout window is on Stark St. Executive Suite (4 Stars) My son and I stayed in an executive suite with two queen beds. The suite (Rm318) was spacious, but it looked a bit more dated than it was shown on the hotel webpage. It did not look rundown, though. I think they need to update the chairs and the carpet. Overall, the room was kept up well and clean. + Bedroom: The queen beds were comfortable. The blackout curtain was nice. + Living room: there's a sofa, a table, a TV, and a desk. + Kitchen: there's a small fridge, a microwave, an electric stove, utensils, a coffee maker, etc. It's well stocked with plates, pots and pans, utensils, etc. Parking (4 Stars) They offer overnight self parking (with in and out privilege) for $25, which is about a half of what other hotels nearby ask for. I had to park on a small parking lot right across the street as the garage was full. There's no fence, no cameras, nothing! Other reviewers complained how small their garage is. I guess we get what we pay for whether it's the garage or the parking lot. COVID-19 Measures (4 Stars) + Plexiglass at the front desk + Hand sanitizers across the hotel + Masks required + Space out between guests for 24 hours + They have suspended their afternoon wine reception and breakfast. See the following link for details: https://www.markspencer.com/covid-19.html?utm_source=google%20maps%20-%20locl.io&utm_medium=website%20button&utm_campaign=locl.io%202019 Price (3.5 Stars) I booked my room at the last minute, 2 days before the checkin date. It was advertised with a 21% discount on hotels.com. The executive suite was $133.51+tax, which was not too much more expensive than a regular room with two beds. I used an additional 10% discount from Target RedCard. So, I paid $138.45 all inclusive. Bottomline What I paid is not bad for a hotel suite in downtown Portland, but I still feel that I missed out a lot for not being able to have breakfast and the wine reception. In the end, the great location made up for everything that was not perfect. Checkin Tip: There's a 15 minute loading zone in front of the hotel on SW 11th Ave. If you arrive here by car, park in the loading zone and check in (without your luggage). ********************* You may also like: 180 Xurros https://www.yelp.com/biz/180-xurros-portland-3?hrid=QGxBqsBH4Pggodj5IiMf5A&utm_campaign=www_review_share_popup&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_source=(direct) +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ If you found this review useful, please hit "useful" or "cool." Yelp
Located in the pearl district of Portland, surrounded by breweries, restaurants, and far away from the city hall. Clean, well organized, efficient use of space. Friendly services. Front desk is very informative. Would recommend.

Yelp
Amazing Staff in a historic building. Loved the location as it's walkable to Powell's books (1.5 block away), all trams, City Centre, Portland Tourist location is around the corner on SW Harvey Milk St, which is kinda like a little Meatpacking District with closed off cobble stone Streets, Scandals a straight-friendly fun gay bar, open-late bodega, and super-inviting McMenahamin's Mel's Cafe (at the least get a drink as the barstaff are super chill).. Go to Crater Lake if time allows... Wine night by the hotel staff looked awesome and fun. I looked super creepish walking up and down the hallways appreciating the art aligning its walls in this humbly eclectic temporary abode. Washer/dryer downstairs, and free gym as well.

Yelp
I had high hopes for my stay at The Mark Spencer Hotel, yet I changed my dates and checked out after just one night. Here's why: - I'm sure the guest experience is different non-covid19. ALL amenities at the hotel were unavailable during my stay, although that is not what it stated in my booking. While I completely understand why certain things were unavailable, they could have provided other plus one guest services to take their place. For example, bottled water or coffee service in the morning. For the price I paid ($120 a night on Booking dot com) and the reviews I read, I expected a little pampering. - they did meet my request to be away from the elevator, however I found the noise on my floor to be intolerable. I could hear everything and ended up sleeping with the TV on to drown out the neighbors. Even a staff member came up to deliver something to their room at about 10:30 pm and had a conversation with them in the hallway. While the hotel itself felt dated upon entrance, the room itself was just fine. Comfortable king sized bed, good water pressure in the rain shower. However, nothing special. It sure seemed like a lot of money to spend for a bed and a shower. On my way back from a nearby coffee shop, a hotel cleaner was outside wiping down the door handles. She saw me approaching, opened the door (how thoughtful!) and then walked through it. I had to use my key card to get in. She had seen me leave just 5 minutes prior. Overall, there are way too many boutique hotels in downtown Portland for me to stay at this one again. I'll leave a review for the new hotel after I check in. Here's hoping to a better guest experience.

Yelp
Beautiful hotel, centrally located walk to restaurants and other sights of Portland. Loved the convenient on site parking, too. When we arrived it was raining and we're offered an umbrella by hotel staff. We have a friend visiting from Southern California, landing in Portland, we live in Eugene so I booked a room again 2 weeks after our initial stay to show her some of the Portland sights. Really looking forward to being a guest at The Mark Spencer's, so would I recommend, definitely!!!!

Yelp
Stayed here one night while I was in Portland. Walking distance to so many restaurants and stores in the pearl district. The area felt safe which was one of my concerns so it worked out well. The rooms were clean and modern looking. The staff was super friendly. I think there was a bar in the hotel but I didn't see it. The had a mini breakfast/coffee bar but I didn't try it. I would stay here again.

Yelp
Wonderful service and comfortable rooms. We took our teens and got a room with a kitchenette and living room area, which gave us more space and privacy. One block from Powell's books and some great restaurants. High recommend this place.

Yelp
My wife and I had high hopes for this hotel based on the reviews. I originally booked 4 nights (Friday - Mon night), but we decided to check-out early after the 3rd night because we didn't want to risk another horrible night and ruin our Portland vacation. Pro: 1. Bedding: comfortable and decent. We appreciated the extra pillows. The cons list: 1. Location and noise disturbances of room 317: this is the room we were assigned and it is not the best room to be in if you are looking to sleep peacefully. First off, this room is wrapped around by the bigger executive suite room 318 and everything happening in room 318 can be heard in this from (see pic of room layout). On the Friday night that we checked-in, slightly prior to 9 pm, the guests in room 318 started making loud noises and laughing loudly. I figured it's Friday night and still before 10 pm, so maybe the noise will stop once quiet time starts. I was wrong. The noise kept up past 10:30 pm and I finally called the front desk staff (Joe/Joel?) to address the guests in 318 in reducing the noise level and/or to switch out my room. Joe told me he will come by to check it out. After another ~20 min and the noise still continuing, I called front desk again but the call was not answered so I went downstairs and spoke with Joe, who came up and spoke with the said guests. Joe assured me he had another room available so if the noises do not stop then he can switch out my room. However, after he spoke with guests in 318, he never got back to me to attempt to accommodate my stay with a different room. Saturday night rolled by and there were no more loud noises, so I figured Friday night was probably just a one-off experience and was going to let it pass. Then, Sunday night rolled by and the guests in 318 (unclear if same guests or new guests) were loud and raucous, even playing music, after 10 pm again. I called front desk again around 10:45 pm to request for them to remind guests in room 318 of quiet time policy and to reduce the noise. The call to front desk was not answered so I walked down to the lobby and spoke with the front desk staff (female, did not catch her name). It's unclear if anything happened from front desk's end, but the loud laughing and music continued. Finally, my wife called the front desk staff again at 11:15 pm and spoke with Tim who said he has been trying to contact the guests in room 318 with no luck, but will come up to check it out. The noise level did die down after Tim spoke with said guests, but my wife and I decided not to chance staying at the hotel for the last night in case loud, raucous noises occur again. It's very disappointing how much my wife and I had to repeatedly ask front desk to address the noise disturbances from room 318. And keep in mind that we had full itineraries and explored Portland during the whole day and only really came to the hotel room (usually around 8:30 pm - 9 pm) to rest and sleep, so it was very off-putting that our "guest experience" was not valued. I understand that it's the weekend (especially the weekend prior to Halloween) and people may be in partying moods, but I would've thought the hotel staff would be more diligent in asking all guests to comply with the hotel quiet time policy and be respectful of each other, given that the hotel is dated and not well-insulated. 2. Cleanliness/lighting in bathroom: lighting is sub-par in the bathroom. My wife was disappointed that the vanity area had very dim lighting and was not efficient. Maybe hotel management will consider adding brighter lighting so women can utilize the space to get ready and apply makeup, without having to constantly turn back to use the main bathroom mirror on top of the sink? Lighting is nonexistent in the shower area. Hence, why we found grout/mold? on the shower tiles, since it probably was never thoroughly cleaned (see pics). Also, I can only assume that the shower was not properly cleaned prior to our arrival since we found some dried-up hair strands on the shower wall itself (see picture), that did not belong to my wife or myself. 3. Parking: this is actually the least of all the cons, but it pretty much goes along with other reviews of this hotel. Parking costs $25/night. Parking spaces are tight and it can be difficult to maneuver around trying to get a spot. Note that spaces are limited and usually gets filled up before 9 pm. Upon checkout, front desk Joe/Joel apologized for the noise disturbances and told us he was going to comp us 1 free night and only charge us 2 nights out of the 3 nights we stayed here. However, he mentioned that since we prepaid through a 3rd party then he may not be able to, but will let us know. It's been 1 week and he and/or Mark Spencer management staff never got back to us and we did not receive any refund on our end.

Yelp
Overall, I would recommend the Mark Spencer Hotel. I picked this hotel primarily due to its location to restaurants and public transportation. Even though check-in was at 4pm, my room was ready at 1:30. I found the staff very friendly and helpful. Just as an FYI, if you use the hotel lobby restroom, the toilet is a bidet! The toilet seat is warmed and features are fun to experiment with. Pros: - Free cookies - They offer chocolate chip, macadamia, and coconut cookies every day between 3 and 6pm. Would have liked to see alternative cookie options, but they were free, so you can't complain that much. - Free wine and cheese - This is offered between 4:30 and 5:30. There are two wines to pick from (red and white). They do try to offer different varieties every day. The cheese and cracker options are the same every day though. - Free continental breakfast - This was better than I expected. Just wish that the offerings would have changed from day to day. Offerings included: Bananas, oranges, apples, two kinds of cereal (Cheerios and Raisin Bran), orange juice, cranberry juice, milk, croissants, muffins, zucchini bread, Danish pastries, small bagels, bread, hot oatmeal, salami, prosciutto, yogurt, and an avocado spread for avocado toast. Middle of the Road: - Parking - This is $25 a night with in and out privileges, but it's not guaranteed. We had a rental car for one night and picked up a parking pass around 7am to ensure a spot when we returned in the late afternoon. We were assigned the open lot across the street. The lot itself isn't very big and it was difficult to get out, due to the nature of the slanted slots and one way in and out. Cons: - Poor Wifi - Housekeeping wasn't that great. Housekeeping didn't replace the drinking glasses after every use. Also, there were three sets of towels in the room, and sometimes not all the towels were replaced.

Yelp
The Mark Spencer Hotel is an absolute gem! I've stayed at luxury hotels whose beds and pillows were nowhere near as comfortable as those here. Don't you hate it when you're staying at a 5 star hotel and the 1000 thread count Egyptian cotton bedding cannot mask the lumpy bed and the pillows are too insubstantial to support you? No such problem at the Mark Spencer Hotel! It is a very charming boutique hotel conveniently located near Powell's, downtown Portland and the Pearl District, enabling you to shop at eclectic stores and dine at great restaurants within walking distance. The rooms are nicely appointed and have a roomy kitchenette should you desire to cook (or reheat leftovers) and eat in. Besides the comfy beds & pillows, the hotel has the warmest, friendliest, welcoming staff I've ever encountered who are efficient and helpful exactly when you need them. Totally loved having a doorman at the ready and the refined and polished staff eager to assist. Really felt special with the personalized attention and felt that all staff encountered were knowledgeable and capable - like everyone was a concierge! Will need to partake in the evening wine reception next time and maybe take advantage of the dog-friendliness of the hotel (at least something to keep in mind for the future). Only stayed 3 nights but would happily stay longer! It was quick and easy to get to various parts of Portland as well as make it out to visit the numerous waterfalls in the area. Truly a very enjoyable stay!

Yelp
Scooped up a room at this hotel for the A/C (which blasted during the worst heat wave this Portland has ever seen). The Mark Spencer is located in the heart of downtown, with plenty of shops, bars, and eateries within walking distance, which would have been amazing if everything wasn't closed from heat overload. We did find a Whole Foods nearby and had a delicious, in-room, air conditioned picnic. The bathroom was beautifully updated, the bed was cozy, and the room was just what we needed it to be, cool. Would stay again if back in town.

Yelp
This place is a true dump! I can't believe how filthy the carpets are. From the rooms to the front desk and to the garage, it's disgusting. The elevators are filthy too and it makes you not want to touch not one single thing. Whoever owns this place, I'm sorry you have not a lick of pride. How could any employee be happy? My husband forgot his slippers and was walking around barefooted. I brought my cleaning Clorox wipes because I don't trust housekeeping. The dishes looked like they were just wiped out. Once I cleaned them they looked better. I don't trust this place as far as their cleaning. I've never stayed at Motel 6 but I felt like I was at one while staying there. My standards are high and if you have high standards, go elsewhere. The floor we stayed on smelled like Someone had cooked fish all week long. We couldn't wait to get home. I couldn't wait to bathe our dogs. The carpet was funky because when my dog smells something funky, he rolls in it. Mark Spencer you'll never see us again. Our next visit, will not be there and I promise you that. Bye

Yelp
Wow we loved our room. So spacious. We were on 4th floor and slept soundly! Complimentary continental breakfast. They have a cool little rooftop bar too. The service was exceptional! We appreciated the bell hop holding our luggage last day on July 26th. Thank you bell hop guy!

Yelp
Nestled into downtown Portland, where NW and SW meet, among building construction sites, historical buildings, boarded up store fronts and new gentrified buildings you'll find the Mark Spencer Hotel. At first glance, she's nothing to write home about, but as you frequent the property you'll notice how clean the side walk is fronting the hotel. Then you'll walk another block and notice how grungy the other sidewalks in the other blocks are, and you'll appreciate the lengths the Mark Spencer hotel goes to keep the property delightfully clean and orderly. The elevators are small but I think it really adds to the old timey charm of the building, formerly the Nortonia Hotel. Who is Mark Spencer you ask? No clue. But I think it has a unique ring to it. We checked in with the afternoon/evening staff and were greeted by the bell man, who was very prompt and friendly. We checked in with a someone at the front desk who was friendly, knowledgeable and extremely helpful. He noticed everyone who came in and out of the property while he was working. This gave us a nice sense of security, especially because, as you may notice, downtown Portland has a lot of questionable folks/activities roaming the streets. The room was the perfect amount of space for two people to comfortable live for 4-5 nights. Probably longer if we needed to. We specifically were looking for a hotel at a good price point when a kitchen /kitchenette and in close proximity to the rail & streetcar lines. This is that place. Sure there are other hotels in the area (Moxy, Hyatt Place etc), something about this hotel spoke to me while we were looking at different places to book. The towels and linens were remarkably soft, still trying to wrap my head around how they launder their linens, I've never had such softness at a hotel before. That counts for a lot. The little things they do at this hotel that adds so much to the experience of being a guest really made our trip that much better. I would stay here again.

Yelp
Stayed here for 3 nights during our visit to Portland. When we arrived, the lady who helped us with check-in was very nice. However, check-in took much longer than anticipated due to problems with the card-reader. Also, sadly due to Covid, many amenities were unavailable. Upon check-in, we were told that there was no housekeeping, no continental breakfast, no tea/coffee/cookies for the afternoon, and no wine reception. While this is definitely understandable due to the Covid situation, it would be nice to have these changes noted prior to booking. Upon arriving to the room, it looked like the standard 3 star hotel room. Bed was a nice queen bed that was relatively comfy. Room and bathroom were a good size and were clean. The layout of the bathroom is a little weird because when the door swings in, it makes the bathroom seem smaller and you have to squeeze behind the door to get to one of the mirrors. Not anything too bad, but just a little tight for bathroom space. One of the major complaints was the poor WiFi connection. In most of my hotel stays, I've never had a problem with using WiFi. At the Mark Spencer, WiFi was very spotty and often times we would have to use our own phone data instead of the WiFi in order to just browse the Internet. One of the good things about the hotel is that it is in a prime location in Downtown Portland close to a lot of restaurants and touristy spots. Overall, this hotel is good for the location, but room itself was just average. WiFi here is also quite bad.

Yelp
Mark Spencer Hotel - Playful Boutique Hotel with Historic Touches. Mark Spencer is perfectly situated where the West End and The Pearl meet, centrally located to some of the best food, pubs and attractions in PDX. This two-wing, sandy brick building built in 1907 was once called Nortonia Hotel; close to the theatre district it was the hotel mecca for all arts, theatre and performers. Those remnants are definitely felt throughout the hotel with touches of artifacts on the walls that hug the hallways of this six floor property. Steve and I visited Portland at the end of September for two nights and we were satisfied with our accommodations at Mark Spencer. The location is incomparable, it's clean, feels safe and booming with bustling great food and entertainment options! My favorite nearby places were definitely, Jake's Famous Crawfish, Heart Coffee and Powell's Books. All within walking distance to Mark Spencer Hotel. The Front Desk staff was incredibly accommodating and even surprised us with a bottle of red wine and sweets for my birthday! Although a 3-star hotel, one of the greatest perks of staying in a boutique hotel is the attention they pay to detail and hospitality. With nine classes of rooms, Mark Spencer can accommodate any guest! Next time you're in Rose City, give them a try! Please keep in mind while traveling during a national pandemic, not everything is perfectly done, not every amenity is available but there's opportunity for us to support the travel industry in America. Grace goes a long way!

Yelp
They met us at the curb with a luggage cart... Very friendly staff, and this morning they didn't have a coffee maker in my room call downstairs and the guy put the coffee on early just for us! His name is Harrison best service ever

Yelp
We stayed at this hotel for a large group and there was a noise complaint made against my party. The one star review wasn't about the noise complaint or fact that my friend and I decided to leave the hotel voluntarily, but it was the snide, condescending remark the manager made and his attitude about the situation. In addition, one of the remarks made was "if we have to ask you to leave, I don't want you to be "homeless" for the night". Seriously? Dude, there's a Hyatt right across the street.

Yelp
I just stayed at the Mark Spencer, and was very happy with my experience there. They are located near everything I wanted to see. The area is safe. The room was really nice. I didn't have a view, but other than that I loved the room. They also have a secure parking lot. The cost is $25 per night. They have a small fitness room with one treadmill, one elliptical, and some weights. I did use the fitness center and it's nothing too fancy, but it did the job for me. The staff was also friendly and helpful. The only thing I didn't like was that their checkin time is 4pm. Most hotels I stay in checkin is at 3pm. Not too big of a deal, but just to let you know. If you're thinking of going to Portland and want someplace nice, then give the Mark Spencer a chance.
