Yelp
My wife and I had high hopes for this hotel based on the reviews. I originally booked 4 nights (Friday - Mon night), but we decided to check-out early after the 3rd night because we didn't want to risk another horrible night and ruin our Portland vacation.
Pro:
1. Bedding: comfortable and decent. We appreciated the extra pillows.
The cons list:
1. Location and noise disturbances of room 317: this is the room we were assigned and it is not the best room to be in if you are looking to sleep peacefully. First off, this room is wrapped around by the bigger executive suite room 318 and everything happening in room 318 can be heard in this from (see pic of room layout). On the Friday night that we checked-in, slightly prior to 9 pm, the guests in room 318 started making loud noises and laughing loudly. I figured it's Friday night and still before 10 pm, so maybe the noise will stop once quiet time starts. I was wrong. The noise kept up past 10:30 pm and I finally called the front desk staff (Joe/Joel?) to address the guests in 318 in reducing the noise level and/or to switch out my room. Joe told me he will come by to check it out. After another ~20 min and the noise still continuing, I called front desk again but the call was not answered so I went downstairs and spoke with Joe, who came up and spoke with the said guests. Joe assured me he had another room available so if the noises do not stop then he can switch out my room. However, after he spoke with guests in 318, he never got back to me to attempt to accommodate my stay with a different room. Saturday night rolled by and there were no more loud noises, so I figured Friday night was probably just a one-off experience and was going to let it pass. Then, Sunday night rolled by and the guests in 318 (unclear if same guests or new guests) were loud and raucous, even playing music, after 10 pm again. I called front desk again around 10:45 pm to request for them to remind guests in room 318 of quiet time policy and to reduce the noise. The call to front desk was not answered so I walked down to the lobby and spoke with the front desk staff (female, did not catch her name). It's unclear if anything happened from front desk's end, but the loud laughing and music continued. Finally, my wife called the front desk staff again at 11:15 pm and spoke with Tim who said he has been trying to contact the guests in room 318 with no luck, but will come up to check it out. The noise level did die down after Tim spoke with said guests, but my wife and I decided not to chance staying at the hotel for the last night in case loud, raucous noises occur again. It's very disappointing how much my wife and I had to repeatedly ask front desk to address the noise disturbances from room 318. And keep in mind that we had full itineraries and explored Portland during the whole day and only really came to the hotel room (usually around 8:30 pm - 9 pm) to rest and sleep, so it was very off-putting that our "guest experience" was not valued. I understand that it's the weekend (especially the weekend prior to Halloween) and people may be in partying moods, but I would've thought the hotel staff would be more diligent in asking all guests to comply with the hotel quiet time policy and be respectful of each other, given that the hotel is dated and not well-insulated.
2. Cleanliness/lighting in bathroom: lighting is sub-par in the bathroom. My wife was disappointed that the vanity area had very dim lighting and was not efficient. Maybe hotel management will consider adding brighter lighting so women can utilize the space to get ready and apply makeup, without having to constantly turn back to use the main bathroom mirror on top of the sink? Lighting is nonexistent in the shower area. Hence, why we found grout/mold? on the shower tiles, since it probably was never thoroughly cleaned (see pics). Also, I can only assume that the shower was not properly cleaned prior to our arrival since we found some dried-up hair strands on the shower wall itself (see picture), that did not belong to my wife or myself.
3. Parking: this is actually the least of all the cons, but it pretty much goes along with other reviews of this hotel. Parking costs $25/night. Parking spaces are tight and it can be difficult to maneuver around trying to get a spot. Note that spaces are limited and usually gets filled up before 9 pm.
Upon checkout, front desk Joe/Joel apologized for the noise disturbances and told us he was going to comp us 1 free night and only charge us 2 nights out of the 3 nights we stayed here. However, he mentioned that since we prepaid through a 3rd party then he may not be able to, but will let us know. It's been 1 week and he and/or Mark Spencer management staff never got back to us and we did not receive any refund on our end.
