We spent 4 nights at the Market Street " Hotel" the week before Christmas, it was a very disappointing experience.
Pro's: great location, 100 yards from Waverly Bridge, 5 mins walk from Royal Mile, 20 min walk from Stockbridge.
Nice linens and bathroom amenities.
Cons: Public spaces/restaurant/bar way too small for a hotel.
The room was tiny, which was an unpleasant surprise as we had chosen a "Vista" room which looked like their middle sized room on the website. We couldn't even unpack our clothes as the room only had 1 drawer and a 3' hanging rail.
You have to book a breakfast reservation the day before, fine for business travel but awful for vacationers who don't want to be tied to any particular wake up time.
We attempted to use the bar/lounge 4 times during afternoons and/or evenings and each time were turned away by staff, saying there was no room. Whenever we pointed out that there were empty tables, we were informed they were reserved or "we're short staffed". On our 5th attempt (on our last night) we were begrudgingly given a table after practically begging, only to be told that in order to get the complimentary glass of champagne promised us, we needed to have brought a notice from the room with us, although the desk clerk did acquiesce and tell the waiter to serve us the drink.
The layout of the "hotel" is floors 1-6 are rooms, level 7 is reception/bar/lounge. So basically you enter from the street into an unstaffed area, get in the lift and go to your room. It feels as though you are just renting a room and with us being denied access to the bar and lounge and not getting breakfast, it didn't feel like a hotel at all.
Luckily we enjoyed breakfast at the Edinburgh Art Centre next door, at least they were happy to take care of us.
