6 Drive-Through Adventures for Socially Distant Explorers

"In the 1920s, a businessman by the name of Frank Pohl founded the Giant Orange chain in California. The concept, as one might guess, involved selling refreshments such as orange juice and hot dogs out of roadside stands that were shaped like giant oranges. Pohl sold off a few of the stands before his retirement, and the last operational Giant Orange closed in 1973. Although the heyday of citrus-shaped stands scattered across California’s roadways has passed, a few of Pohl’s large orbs survive today. One of the last remaining oranges lies nestled amid palm trees in San Jose and still carries on the tradition of roadside dogs and OJ. Mark’s Hot Dogs has been serving up its beef-and-pork franks since 1936. In 1947, then-owner Mark Yuram moved his joint into a decommissioned Giant Orange. Today, diners can order at the counter and eat their dogs (which can be topped with chili, cheese, or sauerkraut) at nearby picnic tables or, in a nostalgic nod to American fast-food spots of yore, use Mark’s car-service option. In the latter case, servers will come right to your car to take and deliver your order. For those who don’t feel like the tart chaser of orange juice, there are floats, sodas, and milkshakes to wash down your dogs. In addition to being an eye-catching oddity, the stand is also historically significant. It’s a relic of the mimetic (also known as programmatic) architecture craze that took over California from the 1920s through ’60s. In an attempt to catch the attention of the increasing number of drivers on the road, many businesses designed their buildings in the very shape of the products they sold, leading to doughnut-shaped drive-throughs, tamale-shaped tamale stands, and more. While some of these buildings can still be spotted across the state, most have been repurposed. Designated a San Jose landmark, Mark’s Hot Dogs is one of the few food-shaped stands still feeding hungry drivers." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Great dogs. Second to none. The problem is their unhappy staff with attitudes. They take your order like you're bothering them. The prices are sky high and while I love 2 get high, I hate paying high prices. If you want a hot dog bad enough especially a good hot dog. You just kind of deal with all the other crap as far as the attitude and the lack of making anyone feel like a valued and appreciated customer. The snapper dogs are great. If you want great dogs and you can get there for the very.few hours they are open (how do you run a business only being open 5 hours a day?) you'll love these dogs.

Google
I'm very sad to say this was definitely not the Mark's Hot Dogs I remember. Born and raised in San Jose and Mark's was the place to go long ago when still on Alum Rock. I remember car side service frost root beer floats and delicious hot dogs with a skin that sort of snapped when you took a bite. I had been telling my boyfriend of the great experience and family trips to Mark's since the 60's and this just wasn't it anymore. To be fair it's been over 10 + years since I last came to Mark's but the hot dogs were nothing to write home about. Way too much mustard, no snap or "bite" to the dog and the lemonade was like pure sugar. Honestly 7 11 has a better dog. So very disappointed. I wanted to start a new generation on the tradition of this place but sadly that's not going to happen. I won't recommend again. 😔

Google
Prices went up as expected in our current economy... But great friendly service and who can complain when we still have a historical place left in San Jose. Wish they would pick up and head over to the south side. Meridian and Hillsdale/branham/ Camden area. Love this place. I used to come with my mom when I was just a kid

Yeng V (JaNe)

Google
It was good for a local hot food spot that's quick to grab

Google
Kinda old style drive in setup. (Pull up with lights on) and someone will come to your car/ there's not a walk up window, although they have picnic tables. I guess you can walk up to a table). We ate in our car. The hot dog tasted good fresh, but the vanilla shake I had ( stole the show) was pretty smooth. Cash or card accepted. Mark's Hot Dogs has been around for awhile, even through tough times.🙂 So give Mark's a spot on your food stops.

Google
Food is always good! Had a hotdog. The male server greeted us and was professional but I could hear a female in the kitchen swearing and yelling about a situation she was personally dealing with. She was so loud. We didn't stay to eat. Please be professional while at work.

Anthony Salas

Google
The best hotdogs ever. My dad used to stop and get us kids hotdogs and then we would go to the drive-inn Tropicana across the street and we would watch a movie and eat hotdogs. Best thing ever. Thanks Dad for the memories

Jerica XO

Google
Service was fast and friendly. The food was already done like she literally walked in and walked out with our food. When we got the food I was extremely disappointed, the polish hot dog was so small and the flavor was dull and watered down if anything it was more like a hot dog, not a polish dog at all. Also, not worth the price we just got two “polish hot dogs” and it came up to $17.00 !! I would have rather had a big bite from 711 better price and flavor compared to here. I’ve had other food from here before too and it was average. I don’t see what the hype is about.

Yelp
It's one of the most genuine things leftover from old SJ. The hot dogs, they serve here are some beefy dogs and have a great snap to it. It has that classic American flavor that is rarely seen. However; I ordered a chille dog with no cheese and got cheese. It's okay. Service here is really friendly and nice, they take care of you here and feels like it's a welcome feeling each time. Parking is a bit small, and the music came straight of 00's. It's a clean area, it's a quick grab and go place. It a bit weird you order, wait, pay and then get food. But, it's not the first time. I would recommend this place. If your getting of the highway to/from east side SJ, this place is what you need if you want a glizzy.

Yelp
Fabulous service and great food. I am so thankful for how kind and patient the employee was with my staff and students. Thanks so much!

Yelp
Super cool and historic spot. They still have drive-up service so you can order from your car and eat there or take it to go. We sat outside on the patio. Super clean spot and the Chili Dog and Fries I got were super good. Great Shakes too. Support small business! The food is better, and you will feel better about spending money when it goes back into your community instead of going to some gross corporation.
google avatar

Yelp
Just ok. Heard great things about the hotdogs here but it was mid. And pricey given the product and the sort of place. For what they are charging, the place should be indoor and air conditioned.
google avatar

John C.

Yelp
Good hotdogs and friendly service. There are out door bench style tables or you can order while seated in your car. Then they bring your order out to you. No indoor seating. The shack where they prepare the food is tiny. I enjoyed my food. I'll be back again.

Steve S.

Yelp
Come get a taste of old school San Jose and get yourself some kraut dogs and some chili and cheese with a Oreo shake! Dogs that got that snap* Always great service and food! Pull up with your headlights on and get window service or step out and get a bench seat and check out the classic menu. They got polish too! Yelp
Too bad they dont have a Nascar Martinsville dog. Those aew awesome. Still love this place, been coming for years.

Yelp
Ok for the old school East Side San Jose kids this place is so nostalgic - I remember coming here all the time as a kid. It looks exactly the same but cleaner! They really cleaned up this place very well. I only came here for a root beer float which was amazing made just perfectly. My friend did get a hot dog and it smelled and tasted just like I remember! I thought service was super fast however I did come here close to closing and it was crazy the poor server was jumping from car to car trying to get everyone on their way. If you're tired of the same ol' costco dog and want something a bit better come here! Wash it down with a good ol' root-beer float!
google avatar

Charlotte N.

Yelp
My husband bought 3 chili cheese dogs and brought home to Morgan Hill to eat. Within 2 hours of eating we both had diarrhea. This has never happened before with the regular hot dogs without chile. Long drive to get what used to be the best hot, no more.
google avatar

Irene M.

Yelp
I'm rarely on this side of town but I was today and how excited was I to see that Marks is still here (I just absolutely love that this place has stood the test of time)! The menu is exactly the same as it was when I was a kid of course the prices are a little higher but with the rising cost of food, I totally get it. The hot dogs we ordered were great, they were a pretty generous size and the buns were just as soft as I remembered. They still have carhop service which just adds to the awesomely nostalgic experience. Our server Kelvin was super friendly and our order came out pretty quick. We will definitely be back the next time we're in the area! :)
google avatar

Yelp
We love this place. Such a great history. The menu is simple and good. They've been in business since 1936. Not much on the menu besides hot dogs but they do it right. The French fries were super hot and tasty. We loved the crunch of the hot dogs. The young lady taking orders was super sweet. She will take your order from at your car and bring the food out to you. We come here from time to time. Love the memories and we are happy they are still here.
google avatar

Manuel L.

Yelp
I absolutely love this San Jose iconic classic hotdog place services is friendly. I love how they come right out to your car and take your order like the old-school days. The classic cheese dog is my favorite and the hotlink is also delicious. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Marlene G.

Yelp
Hot dogs are pretty good here! Nice seating area under a shade. Service was pretty quick and friendly. You can park and stay in your car, they come to you and take your order. They have their own parking lot!

Tony L.

Yelp
Marks hot dogs is the best chili cheese dog in town by far .... I tried many other place from happy hound, corporate Wienerschnitzel and other I seem to forget but I will never forget marks and recommend to all my friends and family ... It's the best and there milks shakes are delicious too.. It's a San Jose landmarks and am proud they are in my neighborhood. Alum rock ...

Yelp
They went down hill they just throw slop on it hella messy too much relishes too much mustard jut a hot messs
google avatar

Yelp
How does a hot dog establishment run out of hot dogs at 12:30 pm on a Saturday!? This place keeps getting worse and worse!
google avatar

Jer-rod J.

Yelp
The Hotdogs were so delicious! The Chili had tons of Flavor and was a perfect topping for my Doggy Dog.
google avatar

Olivia D.

Yelp
I can't believe I've never been here until recently! And they offer car hop service too. We came for lunch on a Saturday and promptly greeted by a man even though he was busy and seemed to be the only one working. He asked if it was our first time and explained the menu to us in detail. He highly recommended the chili cheese dogs, so we ordered two. Some reason I thought this was more of a fast food joint where you order at a window and pick it up yourselves. But not only did he take our order at a table, he made our food as well. I did not realize how much chili was going to be on those things! 5 hours later and I am still full from lunch. Highly recommend this place for a quick bite as we were in and out under 30 minutes. I wanted to leave a tip but there wasn't a way to include it on the receipt :(. Will bring cash next time.
google avatar

Ted M.

Yelp
I use to come here every Sunday after church with my parents, when they were located on Alum Rock, and their hot dog were crunchy and tasty, and the chili beans were great, today I decided to take a drive to their new location and I was very disappointed. The hot dog was a regular dog without that crunchy tasty flavor, and the beans were terrible. Costcos hot dog is way better!!

Michael W.

Yelp
Good hot dogs! High prices 3 hot dogs And a coke 30.00+ blah blah blah 85 characters required
google avatar

Rigo D.

Yelp
I had 2 polish dogs with onions, tomatoes and jalapeños and it was delicious! Service was great and I love the old time feeling. I just want to say to the owner that he is doing a great job and don't take the haters too hard. You can't please everyone but you did please me and I'm the only one that matters.lol! Thank you for keeping this place alive. Sorry no picture of the hot dogs, I ate them too fast.
google avatar

Sara T.

Yelp
Come here to visit a historical landmark and get yourself some hot dogs and chili cheese fries in SJ! Tbh the prices are not worth it. $5+ for a hot dog? A little over priced for hot dogs, especially when costco $1.50 hot dogs can get the job done. However, I still recommend visiting Mark's to visit a little history of SJ! Plus support small local business! I finally came here during the pandemic. The person came up to our car and took our order. Returned like 10 mins later with our food. Due to the pandemic, tables were closed off so we ate in the back of the truck. Overall, hot dogs were good. I don't find myself returning unless I have friends visiting out of town and want to show them a little history of SJ.

Shellie T.

Yelp
Thank you Chris for the excellent customer service ‼ I felt so bad because I could not leave a tip using my credit card. Next time I will definitely have cash. Not only is the food amazing still but the employees at work there are so nice and friendly especially Chris.
google avatar

John P.

Yelp
The food my family and I ordered was good. The service, however, was terrible. The guy who took our order had a lousy attitude even before we ordered. He acted as if we inconvenienced him by trying to order food. I had been coming to this place ever since the 70s when it was on Alum Rock, and I wanted my children to experience a place I enjoyed as a kid since we no longer live in the area. I doubt if I'll ever come back.
google avatar

Marcus M.

Yelp
My favorite hot dog place. This place comes from an era when architecture was part of the marketing of a restaurant. I love that it is shaped like an orange. I also love that it is a car hop and that they come out to your car to take your order and deliver your food. You can order at the tables, but why? It is an experience of history. I usually just get cheese only with the hot dog. My favorite thing about this hot dog is the pop from the first bite, I mean the actual pop. The flavor of the dog is good as well. The dog seems to have shrunk, but its the times.
google avatar

Udyat Krishna G.

Yelp
I went here with my mom and sister for the first time we got 2 chili dogs a ketchup dog a pink lemonade and Oreo milk shake and a pink lemonade and chili fries. Both me and my mom agree the chili cheese dog was probably the best hot dog we've had in our lives it had a perfect ratio of chili to hot dog to onions my sister said the ketchup dog was really good but it had a little to much ketchup for her. The chili cheese fries were perfect like perfect just enough chili and really good fries. The milkshake and lemonade were good too. The service was amazing even though it was one person serving and one person cooking. The lady who was serving us was very patient and helpful explaining the menu. The ambiance was nice it had a hand painted sign and the place where they cooked was shaped like an orange. I would definitely recommend coming here and i would most definitely come back!

Yelp
I've lived in San Jose since 1973 and this is the first time I've ever been to this place. I'm very thankful this place has survived since 1936! I hate to lose history and it's so cool to see one of these orange huts still standing. My wife and I ordered 2 chili cheese dogs, a bag of fries, and 2 drinks for $30. Yea it seems pricy but consider this: the owner has to pay I'm sure sky high rent, rising food prices, employees, insurance, etc etc. The fact that somebody is willing to do this for a living and keep this piece of history alive is worth the price. The hot dogs were obviously high quality. They tasted great and snap when you bite into them. Another reviewer complained that they snap like a cucumber. I have to say, that's the first time I've ever seen a complaint about a hot dog that snapped. Puzzling. The chili and fries were good as well although I think the portion size of the fries could have been bigger. They even come out to your car to take your order. The waitress was friendly. I do wish they would update the credit card machine to allow you to add a tip. They have signs that say "tips appreciated" but that's hard to do if you have no cash and are using a credit card. We truly wanted to tip our waitress today but couldn't. So, support Mark's. Come out for a high quality blast from the past!
google avatar

Lucas O.

Yelp
Didn't know we had a local chili dog spot in San Jose. Way better than Weinerschnitzel. Service was good and food was good. Had the vibe of an old school drive in. Half expected the guy to come out on roller skates lol. Portions are massive
google avatar

Linda G.

Yelp
The hot dogs taste good, but the $7.35 per Hot Dog is a bit much. I have read the other reviews about cost, and the reasoning for the increase in cost. Gas prices have been this high in the past. The cost of food has gone up, but not to the degree of the increase in prices here.

Anonomous E.

Yelp
Who doesn't love a quality hot dog and root beer float! Great food selection and courteous service. We are constant customers! Thank you Mark's Hot Dogs!

dan w.

Yelp
A basic, classic menu with exceptional service. I love the chili cheese dogs or chili cheese polish sausage. The staff is ALWAYS friendly with great service. Eat at the tables or get car service. I'm glad they added the french fry machine. Sorry the neighborhood can be hard on the staff, but they are always friendly and helpful.
google avatar

Nathan H.

Yelp
Honestly very boring. The only reason I have been here is because it's a San Jose Staple. East San Jose Staple. That orange building is iconic. A lot of history. Fun place. I understand that I should not expect much. The food is intended to be affordable and cheap. However, it's just not worth it. Buns are so boring. The polish is not that great. Boring. Not a very good flavor. Not terrible though. I must say, I like the hot dogs more than the polish. More beefy flavor. Savory and good. I have been twice. Just not worth coming back.

Yelp
Returning back home I passed by this spot and haven't ate here in a long while. Here was my experience on a Thursday afternoon. AMBIANCE: Parking: There's parking for the spot, about 10 spots. Seating: Outside seating with about 6 spots for group seating. Feels: The surroundings are nothing fancy. Just your neighborhood hotdog spot. You're close by the rail and some other every day accessories stores and restaurants. For a local food adventure, this is your spot. FOOD: Chili Cheese Dog (Recommend) A standard plumped dog with some chili cheese and requested sauerkraut. For the most part, it's a regular ma and pa type of dog. Before gentrification and all the flashiness, this is your old school type of dog. Bread served as is, boiled dog with chili with a mild kick. CUSTOMER SERVICE: Swell. Requested for a dog and got it in a matter of minutes. TL; DR OVERALL: 3.5 Stars. A solid bite, price could be a ta bit much for me ($6) but still an experience to learn about the backyard of San Jose while supporting a small business. It may not be a world famous place that people need to try but a timeless nostalgia place for locals. Enjoy! TIPS: * Sriracha or Tapatio, take your pic. * Lost? Look for the orange dome.
google avatar

Erika N.

Yelp
My grandma took me here since I was a child and I can tell the original owners sold it to a team that values its history. The service is always nice and the hotdogs hit the spot. Only complaint is that they close early lol.
google avatar

Madaline F.

Yelp
Best hot dog restaurant of all time I am a huge fan of a good hot dog you are hot dog
google avatar

Love K.

Yelp
Serving you since 1936? I call bluff. I've never noticed this joint when I used to search for chili dog restaurants. The fiance found this spot thanks to Google and we were on route. The orange Flintstones looking dome is not hard to spot once you're there. Parking seems like it could be tight if it were to get busy but we got lucky. Instead of going inside, there was someone outside taking orders. I ordered a chili cheese dog and chili cheese fries. I was not disappointed. The chili is on the bean-y side but I prefer it like that. The fries seemed small but I was able to share. All in all it was delicious. Typing this makes me crave another chili dog.

Yelp
Mark's Hot Dog's are still yummy after me coming here over 50 years. There's no other hot dog made from the quality ingredients they use. This family owned business used to be located on Alum Rock Ave, I've been to the newer (in years) location on Capitol Ave a handful of times though I've lived in SC over 30 years now. I love the size of the hot dog & the particular bun they used & I've never found quality since like Mark's Some people thinks it's to expensive but it's not &!you get the quality u pay for. $7.10 is well worth the price of this amazing meal & I will be back! Carhop was friendly & courteous as well! Keep up the good work Mark's Hot Dogs!

Yelp
I typically don't rate very low on the Yelp platform, so it was a surprise for me when I found out my experience with Mark's Hot Dogs was a complete letdown. I paid about $5 for the sauerkraut hot dog, and it tasted rather plain and soggy. The quality of the ingredients felt underwhelming, and the portion size I got was smaller than I had predicted given the price. The chili cheese fries, which was also $5, was marginally better; however, I experienced the same issues with quality of ingredients and portion size. It's problematic when you sit down and eat your food, thinking about how there are much better hot dogs in the Bay Area that are more reasonably priced--at least that was the feeling I had as I was about to head out. The customer service wasn't the best either. I hope I don't sound over analytical when I say that the person who served my order looked like she didn't want to be there. She was on her phone, she handled the food without care, and she gave me and my friend attitude for asking for recommendations. Mark's Hot Dogs look like it would be a phenomenal place with its high reviews and nod to drive-in restaurants of the past. (It's been around since 1936, for crying out loud!) Unfortunately, I'm going to give a pass on eating out at this establishment for hot dogs and chili fries.

Yelp
Hello everyone, I grew up at eating Marks hotdogs. I'm 59 to be 60 years old. Yep that's a longtime to be eating there. My dad built race cars, Super Modified to be exact. With some old time Stock Cars. He would go to Fresno over 152 with a race car on the trailer. He at some point worked on Larry Rodriquez Super Modified race car in our backyard shop the windows and the house would shake when he fired that bad boy up. San Jose Speedway then to Mark's hotdog. I live in Arizona now but every time I'm in San Jose you will find me at Mark's. I eat a chili dog with onions and take 4 back home to Arizona. When I think of chili dogs I think of Mark's. I try to get there at least every 3 months. I get to dying for a chili dog they are the best made, best flavor, and such an awesome atmosphere. I just met the owners last month and told them of my story and I'm now an honorary employee with a Mark's Hotdog employee sweatshirt I have been so blessed with the sweatshirt, and I'm going today from Arizona.

Yelp
This is for mark the owner I read about your troubles with people breaking into the business and homeless people handling around harming business . Your place has been so popular that People talked about your place back home in Texas So The main reason my family and I haven't been going the last 3 years is the staff you have can be rude and basically not friendly.

Yelp
This place has been a San Jose staple for over 80 years and although they don't have the largest or most elaborate menu around, they do an excellent job with the things that they offer. The food is reasonably priced, the atmosphere is nostalgic and the service is always fairly quick despite the fact they can get busy during peak hours. All of their food is good, but the chili dogs and chili cheese fries are always a favorite of mine and are one of the reasons that I always return for more. Traditional chili doesn't usually include beans but here they don't skimp and give you a little more bang for your buck. I'd suggest that everyone try this place at least once, just keep in mind that they aren't a late night spot to dine and do sometimes close early depending on the flow of business.

Yelp
I went with a friend and our kids. The place is a classic hot dog place without much frills. I had a polish with chili and jalapeños, which I enjoyed. We also got chili fries, regular fries, and nachos. The fries were good. Their nachos were more plain than I would usually prefer; however, the kids preferred them that way, so who am I to argue. I also got an orange shake, which was very good. Overall it was a good experience, and the kids enjoyed themselves.

Yelp
Every time i go down this road, I've always wondered about this place. I kept thinking that this place was closed since it looked so vintage and I barely see any cars. I only found this place due to Yelp and wanted to give it a try. I especially was interested in their nachos and jalapeños. Their menu is quite limited with the essentials but thats ok. The nachos gave me this sense of nostalgic feeling back to my childhood. I haven't found a place that gave me that same great taste and also bringing me back to that childhood memory. I have to say that this place did it! Not only that a plate of it was like $4.95. Its a perfect if you want to share it with someone or if you want you can eat it all on your own. Its pretty big in my opinion. Their chili cheese dog is good too and cost like $4.95 as well. I would definitely come back to this place again for their nachos and possibly try their other items on their menu. They do have a carhop service and seating areas outside to eat. Classic vintage style.

Yelp
This is an awesome retro hot dog stand. Its a stand shaped like a giant orange ball. They have hot dogs, chili cheese, fries, floats, polish dogs. Hot links. They need a few more menu adds but bacon wrapped dogs and hot sog sandwiches should be added.

Yelp
I've been coming here every now and then since I was a little kid. My parents always loved this place, and although I've never been a super big fan of hot dogs, this is definitely a local favorite of mine and it's such a big throwback for me. For such a small place, it's pretty clean and has decent prices for the portions they give. I do wish the fries were different, because they give that frozen taste, but it's something I can overlook because the hot dogs outshine everything else. I'll absolutely be visiting again soon so I can relive some great childhood memories!

Yelp
First off, don't give this place a negative review just because you didn't do your research and expected those tripled cheesy truffle shaved loaded hotdogs. They're an old fashioned car hop hot dog place. Complaining about price? It's because they're not a street vendor with no employee. It's still very reasonably priced. Food is just classic. Old school hot dog, fries (which wasn't available here when I was a kid but glad it is now), shakes, sodas. Hot dog is quality ... I HATE when you bite into a dog and is just soft and mushy, this one has that "snap" of the casing. I think it's a super cute place to stop by on a casual date .. or if you're just craving a simple hot dog. I just would love if they had a vegetarian/vegan option so that my friends who don't eat meat can join too, but I get it, don't fix what's not broken.

Yelp
This place is like the Caspers of San Jose. You don't necessarily choose it first but you really enjoy it when you eat here. The hot dogs are yummy and you can pick from all the different toppings. You can also take out-of-towners here and tell them about how this place has moved to various locations. Milk shakes? Check! Hot dogs? Check! Chili? Check! They have all the things!

Yelp
Been coming here since I was a kid it never fails. Any bad reviews doesn't like traditional hotdogs and isn't from ESSJ clearly!

Yelp
This is an old time favorite. The chili dogs/hot dogs still taste the same from way back when. The car hop service is good. The only place like this in East San Jose.
