Marktplatz is one of the main plazas of Düsseldorf. Though no longer used much as a market (cough), it was initially so when it was laid out as part of the city's expansion in the 14th century. It is located between Burgplatz and Marktstraße, Zollstraße and Bolkerstraße in the heart of the old town and has buildings on all four sides.
The entire northern and western part of the square is dominated by the Düsseldorf Rathaus (City Hall). Numerous buildings lining the square are listed as historical monuments. There are some great photo opportunities here!
Visiting on a cold and overcast day, we were able to catch one of the Christmas markets set up here. The market has a designated entrance and exit where security personnel were checking vaccination status. I was able to get in by flashing my US passport and CDC card, but those rules may have tightened up since then.
