15 Best Beaches in Sydney | Condé Nast Traveler

"Maroubra’s name comes from the Aboriginal word for "like thunder," and its powerful waves have made this kilometer of sweeping golden sand a surfers’ paradise. The longest beach in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs, it’s backed by verdant bush and has emerged as a true locals’ destination, with fewer tourists than Bondi. A National Surfing Reserve, Maroubra has reliable beach breaks with good swell. This is also a popular swimming beach that's patrolled year-round by lifeguards. Don’t miss Mahon Pool, a square rock pool hidden on the headland north of the beach." - Sophie Davies

Nice beach for surfing and enjoying with less crowd. Plenty of parking space available on weekdays, clean environment & clear watching point beside the beach.

A really beautiful beach. The waves always surprise you! Sometimes calm and collected, sometimes will bring you a thrilling awesome adventure. If your looking for a less busier Bondi Beach, that’s close to Bondi and the City, meet Maroubra Beach

Nice and clean beach. Free parking for 4h, plenty of car spaces during weekday. I visited on a Tuesday. Quiet beach, not overcrowded.

Paradise found! 🏝️ This beach is seriously one of the most stunning places on Earth... but fair warning: watch out for the locals, sharks, and anything else that might take a nibble! 😂 Keep your eyes peeled and your snacks close.

Had an awesome walk along the beachside board walk - clean pathways, stunning views and amazing rock formations.

Beautiful Park and beach ⛱️ I saw 👀 a whale 🐋 here today . It's has a restaurant and bar plus a playground. It's patrolled by life savers. Across the road is the shopping village, with the maroubra seal's club and a pub. There is free BBQ facilities and it's a short walk to Gordon's Bay and clovelly Beach ⛱️ i check out the bush track's at south maroubra Beach and south maroubra today.Maroubra Beach is a popular surfing spot known for its consistent waves, with a more relaxed and less crowded atmosphere compared to Bondi or Coogee. Nearby attractions include the Mahon Pool, Arthur Byrne Reserve with its playground and skate park, and the Malabar Headland National Park for coastal walks.Maroubra Beach, affectionately known by locals as "The 'Bra," is a spectacular and long stretch of sand that offers a distinctly authentic and less commercialized beach experience compared to its busier neighbours, Bondi and Coogee. As the first New South Wales National Surfing Reserve, its identity is deeply tied to the ocean, offering consistent and often powerful waves that make it a mecca for surfers. 🏄 The Surfer's Paradise Consistent Swell: The beach faces southeast, directly exposed to the Pacific Ocean, meaning it often delivers reliable waves for all skill levels, from beginners taking a lesson to experienced local surfers. Its consistent breaks are the main draw. National Surfing Reserve: This official status speaks to the quality and cultural significance of its surf, reflecting the area's deep-rooted surfing history. Surfing Culture: While known for having a strong local contingent, modern Maroubra is welcoming, with several surf schools offering lessons. 🏊 Beyond the Waves: Swimming & Relaxation Lifeguard Patrols: The beach is well-patrolled by lifeguards, and swimmers should always stay between the red and yellow flags due to the powerful surf and rips. The southern end is often considered calmer for swimming. Mahon Pool: A highlight is the stunning Mahon Pool at the northern end of the beach. This large, exposed rock pool offers a protected and spectacular place for a swim or lap session, with waves often crashing dramatically over its edge. Beach Length: The kilometre-long stretch of sand means there's always plenty of room to lay out a towel, even on a busy summer's day. 🌳 Amenities & Surroundings Arthur Byrne Reserve: Adjacent to the beach is a large, grassy park perfect for families, with free BBQ facilities, picnic tables, a shaded kids' playground, and a skate park. Coastal Walks: Maroubra is a great starting point for stunning coastal walks, including the path through the rugged Malabar Headland National Park, offering incredible ocean views and a chance for whale watching between May and November. Cafes and Dining: While less 'flashy' than other suburbs, there is a good selection of casual, beachfront cafes and eateries for a post-surf coffee, lunch, or a relaxing meal with an ocean view. Maroubra Beach is an excellent choice for those seeking a genuinely relaxed, surf-focused, and family-friendly beach day away from the intense tourist crowds. It offers a perfect blend of high-energy water activities and peaceful, grassy parklands. Just remember that its Aboriginal name means "place of thunder," so always treat the ocean with respect, particularly when swimming outside the flags. Highly Recommended for: Surfers, active families, coastal walkers, and anyone seeking an authentic Sydney beach vibe.

Super nice beach. Spacious, quiet, sand is soft. Good for surfing. 3 minutes drive to the swimming pool (sea water pool) Have parking just nearby. Children playground. Many nice view restaurants surrounding. And there is a cafe just located next to the beach with extremely relaxing vibe and good coffee!

Google
My favourite beach! This beach has it all! It's not as busy as Bondi or Coogee, and yet has great surfing and swimming along a deep, wide handy beach and an amazing Rock Pool for laps and meditation. Change rooms are clean and safe and the Mahon Rock Pool is just magical! Flushed daily by the tides and the surf, locals enjoy morning laps or sunset floats! The beachfront cafea and restaurants are lively and a good value, clean and delicious!

Yelp
Beautiful beach, especially if you can make it during the week. I was one of 5 people on a Friday! Waves are hit or miss, so it's a nice chill beach, not a great surfing one. I did see some on Saturday, but it seemed more like training waves, so don't worry!

Yelp
Disney on Ice- This picturesque beach in Sydney's Eastern suburbs. A hub for surfing, beach sports, and- apparently, Disney Princesses. Even on cold winter days, you'll never fail to find an interesting character wandering the sand or the promenade. On one rainy late night, a certain Disney princess decided to crawl out of her moss-laced, concrete castle (the stormwater drain towards the northern end of the beach) to soak in the midnight sun after a firm session of amphetamine indulgence. Snow White (a fitting name for many reasons) stumbled towards the promenade, making her bi-daily migration to escape the rising tides. I happened to catch sight of her in quite a state; her rosy cheeks replaced by flaking, scarred skin, and her delicate jawline coated in a patchy grey beard. Snorting a line off her hand, she approached a bin. She rolled up her soggy dress sleeves, "Fucking cockroaches!" She grumbled in a gravelly baritone, as she rummaged her delicately wrinkled hands through the bin bag. "Stop eating my dinner!" She gracefully trembled away with a half-eaten apple (at least she has a healthy diet), lit up a pipe, and heaved her bones into the shallow darkness of a nearby park. Deeper and deeper, she disappeared out of view... as mysteriously as she came into it. There are many more stories of this place that I am not willing to tell. 5 stars- I haven't been stabbed yet.

Yelp
Best beach in Sydney. It's a huge beach with a fraction of the crowd of Bondi and Coogee. A hand full of cafes to choose from, a nice pub with good food and a place called Beverage Depot that I always get my coffee from. A couple Thai places, couple burger joints, couple pizza places and a fish n chips. Considering you don't have to pay for parking and even on the busiest days it's chill compared to the other beaches, I don't see why more people don't come to Maroubra on weekdays.

Yelp
One of the largest, yet least commercially developed beaches in Sydney. And the locals like to keep it this way. There are some rumours of surf gangs trawling this area, but it's probably still safe enough. Just steer clear of anyone who seems to be working age yet has time to sit around and watch the beach from his car. Very popular with surfers as it is one of the more windy beaches. There are beachvolleyball courts but you may only use them if you passed a 6 week course. There are also free BBQs available.

Yelp
One of the nicest and least crowded beach in Sydney. Its like a smaller version of Bondi beach minus the crowd. I live close by around 5 minutes walk and I love coming here on a nice sunny day. Its just peaceful and tranquil. The wave is also pretty safe for the kids. Not as rough ad Bronte. I would recommend this beach to anyone especially family with kids. I come here almost everyday during spring and summer. And usually in the afternoon in fall. Also, theres a really nice bar if you want to grab some food.

Yelp
I love Maroubra. It's a long, big, beautiful beach, much like Bondi, but without all the posers, tourists, traffic or parking hassles... SHHHH!!! Don't tell anybody! I come here in the middle of the day because I can just cruise up Gardener's Road with no hassles and find a parking spot in under 15 minutes, and guess what? You can stay for 4 hours... FOR FREE!!! No parking meters. Park 5 minutes walk away and you don't even have a time limit. I also love it cause it feels like its not even in Sydney. It could be down the coast near Wollongong. Or maybe like Bondi in the 80s! Its so underdeveloped, but that is all of its charm. It does have cafes and fish and chips shops, of course, and the old RSL... but not much else. Its very, very unpretentious. And sometimes that's exactly what you need. I can't fault it!

Yelp
Had the whole beach to myself cause I went in May, where the weather was starting to get slightly colder. Clean beach, good facilities, great waves, & easy to get to with public transport.

Yelp
My Favourite Beach in Sydney! Has a very chilled and relaxed vibe. Not crowded. Some of the best waves for surfers! Variety of cafes and juice bars. Anything you need for a perfect beach day.
