Yelp
We have delighted in visits to the Lake Tahoe area for the past 45 years. Marriott Timber Lodge: South Lake Tahoe located at 4100 Lake Tahoe Boulevard South Lake Tahoe, CA 96150 (530-542-6600) is home to a summer holiday. Take care not to confuse Marriott Timber Lodge, South Lake Tahoe with the nearby Marriott Grand Residence Club, Lake Tahoe (1001 Heavenly Village Way South Lake Tahoe, CA 96150, 530-542-8400.) The two properties are very close, and both are served by the high speed Heavenly gondola. Marriott Timber Lodge is an upscale Marriott timeshare located in South Lake Tahoe California. Nearby is Stateline, Nevada. In fact, there is an older resort near Stateline, Nevada that features a ballroom dance floor that has a line in the center designating California to the West and Nevada to the East. How neat is that? We find check-in and direction to our Marriott villa to be an easy task. Marriott Timber Lodge is a newer Marriott property that features a mountain designer theme. Marriott Timber Lodge architecture actually looks like a western resort, and feels like a very refined western resort. A primary attraction is that Marriott Timber Lodge is a ski in/out resort, and the property is located adjacent to the Heavenly gondola. We have traded into a two bath and two-bedroom unit. Fortunately there are A/C units and fireplaces in each villa. We say fortunately, because not all high alpine properties offer A/C for summer guests. The "new" kitchen area sparkles with modern appliances, and state of the art cook wear. The mandatory washer and dryer are present. These villas are about 1200 square feet, and the openness and windows invite the outdoors inside. The master bedroom is typical Marriott design and luxury. The second bedroom is a small hotel suite featuring a private entrance. The designer furniture and appointments are elegant. The Marriott Timber Lodge is exactly the kind of mountain lodge that we expect. Perhaps Marriott got it all wrong in Vail and Breckenridge, Colorado. But Marriott got it right in South Lake Tahoe. We appreciate the use of leather in the furniture, the heavy wood accents, and the location. While a ski in/out resort the location is very near U.S. 50, and within walking distance to a cinema complex, art stores, shopping, and a nice grocery store. We recommend driving to the grocery store. South Lake Tahoe features a number of restaurants. We also recommend a villa higher up on the mountain. Marriott Timber Lodge fronts on U.S. 50, and the noise from the road maybe distracting. We also recommend the use of a rental car. There are several very nice resorts in South Lake Tahoe, and Marriott Timber Lodge ranks at the very top.
We have stayed at some older Marriott resorts and have wondered why corporate maintains these properties. This is not the case with Marriott Timber Lodge. Marriott does provide the villa hot tub at Marriott Timber Lodge, while some newer Marriott's have replaced the hot tub with a large multi-head shower unit. For some reason, Interval International suggests the Reno airport as the destination airport. We have never cared for Reno or for the traffic congestion of the Reno area. We recommend the Sacramento airport for a very pleasant mountain drive to Lake Tahoe. As we are discussing our holiday, we have planned an evening in Sacramento at the Sacramento Marriott Rancho Cordova with a visit to Old Sacramento the following day. In 1839 John Sutter arrived on the shore of the American River near its confluence with the Sacramento River. With the promise of a Mexican land grant, Sutter and his landing party established Sutter's Fort. As the settlement grew and became permanent, it attracted other businessmen looking for opportunities. Sutter and the people he attracted created a commercial center in the area, but it was the Gold Rush in 1848 that created the City of Sacramento. In the mid-1960's, a plan was set forth to redevelop the area and through it, the first historic district in the West was created. Today, with 53 historic buildings, Old Sacramento has more buildings of historic value condensed into its 28 acres than most areas of similar size in the west. Registered as a National and California Historic Landmark, the properties in the district are primarily owned by private owners, with individual businesses leasing shops and offices. The area has flourished and is once again a thriving commercial trade center. From Sacramento, we elect to enter the Sierra Nevada Mountains as we journey to Lake Tahoe. The Sierras runs 400 miles north-to-south and is approximately 70 miles across east-to-west. Notable, Sierra Nevada Mountains features include Lake Tahoe, the largest alpine lake in North America. Lake Tahoe is the USA's second deepest (the deepest is Crater Lake in Oregon, at 1945 feet deep;) Mount Whitney at 14,505 feet, the highest point in the contiguous United States; and Yosemite Valley sculpted by glaciers out of 100-million-year-old granite.
