Marshall Field and Company Building

My grandparents used to come down from the Upper Peninsula to shop at the Marshall Field store for our Christmas presents in the 1950's. Just the name was magic to me. Finally I was able to visit the building myself twenty years ago. It's still impressive for a California boy.

I liked the valet parking. It was very convenient. Shopping at Macy's ain't what it used to be with every thing locked up, no displays, or try on's anymore . Thieves made everything worse for the rest of us shoppers. It might as well be window shopping. Service was good, but they had to hunt for the person who has the keys to their dept items.

Beautiful beyond words, clean, excellent staff. Walnut Room is lovely, and Santa land was really fun. Great for all ages

2023 Windows were pretty. Wish Floor 8 viewing area was still open. It was perfect for photos. Now, photos are messy. Too many people and tables in the way. Cannot get full effect. Otherwise Macy's was beautiful and historic. 2021 Santaland was disappointing. Still had to wait 90 minutes in an overly packed line even with a reservation.

Lots of History here, truly an amazing company and stood for years. My grandmother and Mom tell me stories of it growing up here. I attached a few photos regarding the history.

Under the current ownership of Macy's stores, I was very pleased to see all of the memorabilia that the store offers its visitors in honor of the original founders and staff members.

Career was solid retail in Wisconsin and Illinois. For that reason I throughly enjoyed the history of the Marshal Field company. Macy's placed a wall and antique clothes represented back to mid 1800's. The presentation is adjacent to the Christmas Shop on the 2nd floor. Shopped yesterday and found what I needed. Many pieces were 1/2 off. Ornaments were 70 % off already. There's a line in that department. The Walnut room shares its annual tree visit. All chair and tables have been removed. There are adequate associates on the first floor. Most levels an associate is hard to find. The building is a landmark and if you never visited, you'd be in for a treat. The 8-9 floors are designed around a Tiffany dome on top. Nice that Macy's sells Field's chocolate yet. Many bathrooms, all restaurants and fast food is closed. Handicap Accessible. Don't forget to see the Macy's State Street windows. This shopping district is named "The Loop". Have fun.

By far, one of the best Macy's in the country. Only the Pentagon store compares. It's always neat, clean, and organized. Derrick in men's suiting is locally known as the goto person to prepare for any event. The only reason I'm rating a 4 instead of a 5 is because they need more help. It's usually extremely difficult to find someone in women's shoes for example and the few people that are working are typically overwhelmed with requests. Overall, I love this Macy's.

Another free treasure. This historical building used to be Marshal fields and now is the Macys on State street. It's a beautiful building ... took some inside pics from different angle and perspectives. It's famous for the mosaic ceiling which is a work of art that pics can't capture ... but i tried. It's beautiful. The dome ceiling was designed by renowned glass artist Louis Comfort Tiffany (it's the largest Tiffany mosaic in existence) and crafted by a group of 50 artisans who worked atop scaffolds for over 18 months to complete the project. This work of art shimmering vaulted ceiling that covers 6,000 square feet and comprises 1.6 million pieces of iridescent glass. If you like it and are looking for more free art treasure check out the ceiling in the chicago cultural center for another gorgeous Tiffany ceiling. Love that Chicago offers so much to see and do free or for little cost. I also like looking and and looking down at the different floors. afraid of heights but it was still worth a glimpse over the railings. Also check out the restaurant .. very elegant .. i think it's the walnut room.

I'm standing here at the entrance of 111 N. State Street. I turn around there's a banner on the "Block 37" shops that says "Sweet home Chicago" and coincidentally when i'd gotten off the blue line and connected via the Pedway to the entrance downstairs, I was like "what he?.." I just discovered that they moved all the sixth floor bedding to the basement and the ladies greeted me with "welcome home!" It was weird and awesome!! It was excellent since this building is everything "home" to me. This building has so much history in my family (beyond just housing the department store of Marshall Field's...which was amazing in itself - "give the lady what she wants" - their customer service motto.) The water fountains were working when I was a kid and I'd drink from them just for fun. I loved stepping up, turning the tight silver knob, trying to balance my body while drinking that bubbling water. Shopping was boring! Riding the escalators in the central atrium was not. Then of course, there was Christmas! My mom took me and friends to the Walnut room every year where we'd sit under the Great Tree and make a wish as the princess sprinkled fairy dust over our head. That was after a meal of course and after freezing our butts off looking at the store windows outside. I loved pushung the "shoe"button in the elevator. never knew what floor it was just that there was a shoe on the elevator button. We marveled at the Tiffany ceiling (still do!) and basically building deserves every bit the Chicago landmark status that it has. Macy's is moving things around and Refurbishing some and hopefully they get the escalators in working order they been a problem now for a while. And even though the store inside the building isn't "Marshall Field & Co" anymore with its signature green bags, you can still find traces of the past. I'm glad too, at least the Christmas time history is preserved and brought to life each year. Seventh floor still has history about the great tree as well as Christmas traditions. Oh I didn't even mention the green clocks that are amazing in themselves and I'm looking at it right now remembering I'm meeting a friend at 11 ... yikes! so I'll be back to post pictures later gator.
