I was so excited to visit this lighthouse famous from the Forrest Gump movie. The experience was even better than I had hoped for. We were there on a July afternoon and there were a decent number of people visiting at the same time. There is a path on the grounds with historical information that we started with followed by a museum and gift shop where we stopped at next. The museum had lots of interesting information on both the lighthouse and the area. Bob let us in to the lighthouse itself and was a very kind and interesting volunteer to chat with. The views are spectacular and the lighthouse itself is gorgeous. If you are in the area, stopping here should be a priority. Highly recommend. This is an experience not to be missed

It rained that day! Still when it stopped it was nice! Plenty of parking and bathroom and nice shop/ museum inside. Road is narrow so closer in one car at a time. I didn't run into anyone opposite of me. Resident nearby.

Great lighthouse. Easy to get to, plenty of parking, definitely worth a visit. Of course we came because it was in Forest Gump. Exactly like the movie. You can run up just like Forest Gump did. So much fun!

Marshall Point Lighthouse is small but picturesque, with a classic wooden walkway leading to the light. Peaceful setting and great photo spot with ocean views. Worth a quick stop if you’re nearby.

Interesting artifacts inside the museum/gift shop. And a fun little gift store! Beautiful views all the way around. I could have sat there all day watching and listening to the waves.

We had a wonderful visit to Marshall Point Lighthouse & Museum. The museum is full of fascinating local history, and the exhibits brought Port Clyde’s past to life — from the sardine industry and granite quarries to everyday artifacts and community stories. One of the highlights was speaking with the gentleman greeting visitors. He was welcoming, knowledgeable, and took the time to explain details of the displays, including the sardine packing house where women once worked with bandaged hands due to the sharp cans. Hearing that he had worked there himself gave the history a very personal and authentic touch. The photos, paintings, and artifacts — especially the exhibits on the 1970 sardine factory fire and the granite paving blocks — were memorable and very well presented. It was clear how important these industries were to the life of the community, and the museum does a wonderful job preserving and sharing that story. This is a place not to be missed when visiting the area. Thank you for keeping this history alive and sharing it so generously with visitors.

Yelp
We again included this scenic lighthouse and its interesting museum in our itinerary this year and so should you. The museum's staff welcomed our questions and really made our visit worthwhile.

Yelp
You'll find the Marshall Point Lighthouse at Marshall Point Rd, Tenants Harbor, ME 04860. There's plenty of parking right by the Light Keeper's houses (which is now a museum and gift shop). I'd say that this is one of the better recognized of Maine's lighthouses - while small, it's positioned at the end of a walkway that extends near the water and was used in Tom Hank's movie, Forrest Gump (this is the easternmost point of Forrest's iconic run across the USA). Of course we had to stop - it's a bit out of the way but if you're already visiting Cushing for the Olson House and Langlais Preserve, it's way worth the detour (hit the Owls Head lighthouse too - that's what we did). This lighthouse is extremely well preserved, as is the light keeper's house museum. The museum also has an abundance of exhibits to keep you interesting - one of the better from the examples I viewed to similar-sized lighthouses. There are picnic tables arranged near the house so this would be a good place to eat those lobster rolls you picked up along the way. The views from the lighthouse and property are pretty stunning. The staff (I believe mostly volunteer) were very pleasant and used to answering the stupid questions posed by most tourists - kudos to their training and love of local preservation. In all a great visit.

Yelp
This is my second time visiting Marshall Point and this time was even better. Absolutely gorgeous, even though the day was blustery. We walked through the museum as well and it did not disappoint. There are plenty of artifacts to enjoy. We thanked the volunteers for being so informative. Definitely coming back!

Yelp
This light house is our favorite place to walk our pups when we are in Port Clyde. They love to explore (on leash) and we enjoy a beautiful light house and gorgeous views. Great views of the island and port. It's also a gorgeous spot for a picnic, with several picnic tables and benches near by. We especially love to stop by after it rains. Its usually empty and we have caught some gorgeous rainbows behind the light house then that are mesmerizing. This last visit was the first time we were there when the museum and gift shop were open. It was a nice little museum that celebrates Port Clyde history. It had incredibly friendly, knowledgable, and passionate local docents volunteering there. To our surprise, the light house and museum were free. They also had all kinds of Port Clyde and light house gifts.

Yelp
Initially established in 1832, Marshall Point Light was updated to the current structure in 1857. It is a 31 foot tall white brick tower on a granite foundation. It is connected to land with a wooden walkway. You may think the lighthouse looks familiar - Forrest Gump ran here in the movie: https://youtu.be/QH-FBLV4a0Q The lighthouse is about 15 miles from US-1 so it's not the most convenient if you're just touring Maine's lighthouses. But it's worth it as there is parking and a fabulous view. Go around to the north and you'll get a good picture. [Review 14890 overall, 392 of 2021, number 72 in Maine.]

Yelp
Picturesque lighthouse. Easy access from the parking lot. Great rocky beach to explore. Cute museum and shop. Perfect on a bright sunny day.

Yelp
We strolled from town to this picturesque lighthouse. It was a healthy walk past some cute houses and gardens. The lighthouse is adorable. The views, splendid. It was a lovely spot.

Yelp
What a great tucked away lighthouse to explore. Perfect for kids, photo opportunities abound, and a beautifully curated museum. Go check out Port Clyde when done there. Not touristy at all.

Yelp
A must see for any visitors to the area! The lighthouse is beautiful on its own merits but has the added bonus of being featured in Forrest Gump. There is a good sized parking lot available and a small museum on site. There is also easy access to the water and a rock beach if you'd like to look for shells or touch the Atlantic.

Yelp
Lovely lighthouse with a nice gift shop, and knowledgeable volunteers. The sweet little museum had interesting artifacts and photos. We walked around the lighthouse until the light came on, and spotted three bald eagles over the water. We also recreated Forest Gump's run to this lighthouse. :)

Yelp
Beautiful and uncrowded spot for a picnic. Lovely beach for skipping Stones or wading if you don't mind the ice cold water.

Yelp
Spectacular local site for tourists and photographers -- also the lighthouse from Forrest Gump. Highly recommended.

Yelp
One of my favorite places EVER Every year we go to visit the area we have to come to Marshall point for the beauty. We've been there all different times of the day and every tome it it beautiful

Frances T.

Yelp
The grounds are immaculate! We enjoyed the peace and quiet, the birds and the beautiful structures! I didn't even realize that it was included in Forrest Gump but I understand why!

Yelp
You may recognize this lighthouse as the Eastern-most point on Forrest Gump's cross country run - obviously it's absolutely gorgeous. In addition to some fun pictures of Tom Hanks from that day of filming, the little museum in the keeper's house is a treasure trove of information about mid-coastal Maine and maritime history in general. The gift shop has a bunch of t-shirts, sweaters, jackets, toys, Maine themed souvenirs, etc. and provides a great way to contribute to the preservation of the site. TONS of space for picnicking on the grounds!

Yelp
Beautiful!!! Love it there and the museum is also nice. Great piece of history here. Big fan of Forrest Gump! Was cool to visit one of the locations in the film on my vacation.

Yelp
We loved it. Super cool. I would recommend dressing WAY warmer than you think you should. It's WINDY! Of course my husband did the Forrest Gump run down it. :) Great place to take pictures. We went in the off season (March) so the museum wasnt open.

Yelp
Beautiful lighthouse! Gorgeous views! Got some great shots at sunset! I liked that you could walk all the way out to the lighthouse! When standing on the deck you could see some of the small islands off the coast of Maine. We were very lucky the night that we went and got to see 3 dolphins swimming pretty close to shore!

Yelp
Marshall Point Lighthouse is also known as the Gump Light. The Marshall Point light is 31 feet tall and was built in 1857. It marks the entrance of Port Clyde Harbor and at least one other light has been in this location. The light is rather unusual in that the bottom half is made of granite from the local quarries but the top half is brick. It originally had a 5th order Fresnel Lens but of course that is long gone. The first keeper's house was thwacked by lighting long ago and a new one was built in the some location. There is a small museum and gift shop in the new keeper's house but they have never been open when I have been around. I guess I show up too late, too early or too something. There is a very cool thousand pound bell on the ground in front of the keepers house that was once used as a fog signal. A walkway allows you to go right up to the light and a couple of picnic tables are on the grounds. Port Clyde is actually a small fishing village in the larger, but still small town of St. George. The whole area around the lighthouse is a beautiful place all year long with views of Port Clyde Harbor and the surrounding hills. A great place to yak, hike, ski or bike.. Or perhaps run. In fact this is the lighthouse where Tom Hanks finished up his run across country in the movie Forrest Gump. That's why some of the local people around Port Clyde call this lighthouse Gump Light.

Yelp
This is a wonderful lighthouse to visit. Good parking and easy accessibility. Spectacular views.

Yelp
Unlike other lighthouses in Maine which are along a cliff, the lighthouse here isn't at a high elevation so you won't be able to see very far from it. But what's cool about it is It's located at the end of a pedestrian bridge over a rocky shore so you can walk right up to the structure from the bridge, or you can climb down to the rocks and walk underneath everything. The rocks are pretty slippery and depending on when you go the ocean may be right at your feet but it's pretty fun to see this lighthouse from angles that you can't get at the other ones along the coast.

Yelp
Happened to be in Maine for a visit, and thought, "If Forrest Gump could make it here during his cross-country run, then I should check it out." It was just as picturesque in real life as it appeared in "reel time". The atmosphere was peaceful, the light, keeper's house and grounds were in immaculate condition, the small museum on site offered a fascinating glimpse into days gone by, and the staff/volunteers provided interesting tidbits about the area's history. Nice day trip that was well worth the time.

Yelp
Beautiful light house and museum. Great spot to picnic, play or relax. Parking is tight/limited definitely NO room for an RV. One of our favorite summer spots when in Port Clyde.
google avatar

Robbie B.

Yelp
Forest Gump isn't the only fan of the Marshall Point lighthouse. It is one of the most photographed sites in Maine and a destination we take all of those who come to visit us in the summer. Be sure to visit the museum inside the Maine building.

Yelp
This is a very interesting lighthouse to visit. Some even call it the "Gump Light". The grounds are immaculate and well manicured. There are picnic tables for you to enjoy your lunch and just sit and enjoy the view. The museum in the Keeper's house has a large variety of artifacts that are very interesting to view. The day we visited there was a local person who answered questions from anyone that stepped up and asked. Then of course you can walk out the walkway and see where they filmed the Forest Gump movie. A must stop if you enjoy visiting lighthouses.

Yelp
My wife and I made a special trip flying up and driving down along Maine's coast with our particular interest of vacationing and photographing coastal lighthouses. The majority of the light were extremely accommodating with the exception of the staff at the Marshall Point lighthouse, who hounded us and others insistently about the grounds and in the gift shop regarding commercial photography. "NO COMMERCIAL PHOTOGRAPHY" was emphatically expressed upon all visitors. Additionally, they are not a "drone friendly" venue in which some the best video and photos compositions are viewed from offshore around the such a point. While the lighthouse and keepers home is kept in a high state of release, the cantankerous, unrelenting and unaccommodating staff were more than we were willing to deal with on an otherwise relaxing vacation. Recommend passing this lighthouse up for more accommodating and beautiful locations along the Maine coastline, spend your money elsewhere...

Yelp
Most stunning gorgeous special lighthouse in all of Maine. The movie forest gump was filmed here. And for a good reason it is stunning. The gift shop and museum is awesome too!!!! Overall super special place. Must go if in Maine! My husband proposed there and was just the mis breath taking spot to have this amazing moment in our lives occur!

Yelp
It's a light-house...what more do you want from me? It's tricky to get to, but relatively pretty. There's a cool bridge out to the lighthouse, and if it's not crowded and you can get a picture down the length of the bridge, with good cloud conditions, like the picture below, then it's really pretty. If you like lighthouses, give it a try. If not, the skip it.
