Martello Hall - Review - Hackney - London - The Infatuation

"Once upon a time in East London, it was late at night and we were proper starving. We were at a phase in our lives where we thought we were better than a kebab (even though no one is better than a kebab), so we searched high and low for an alternative. That alternative manifested in the form of Hackney pizza joint Martello Hall. Upon walking in just before midnight, there were about five people there - a small group drinking by the bar, and to our left, Robert Pattinson. Yes, that Robert Pattinson. We knew right then and there that we’d stumbled into a good thing, because that guy can’t really leave the house without getting tackled by teenagers or turning into a beam of light or something. Since then, we’ve been back regularly. Martello Hall is your classic gentrification cinderella story: ugly old boozer transformed into bright, trendy industrial-feeling space serving craft beer and wine on tap, and pizza. It’s the kind of place that works well for a casual date, a drinks meet-up, a group-get together, or - as we discovered first-hand - a late night pizza session. The kitchen’s open until midnight on weekdays, and 3 am on weekends. Speaking of pizza, the stuff you’ll find here is quite good. Martello Hall’s pizzas are the brainchild of one of the original Pizza Express chefs, and we like to think that what’s going on here is what might have happened if Pizza Express didn’t become a chain to appeal to the masses and went all out on pizza innovation instead. Martello Hall does a very nice margherita, but you can also expect to find toppings like beetroot pesto or roasted squash and hazelnuts. A few of them may sound questionable on paper, but we’ve enjoyed all of the results. photo credit: Karolina Wiercigroch The rest of the menu isn’t particularly worth talking about - it’s not that anything is bad, but like the werewolves in Twilight, nobody really cares about them. You’re here for the pizza, and for as much wine as you can drink from the taps in one sitting. So if you find yourself in a similar situation, needing some casual but good late pizza in East London, then Martello Hall is your spot. It turns out you are in fact better than a kebab. Food Rundown Meatballs You can tell that a lot of time was spent on perfecting the tomato sauce for the pizzas, and the meatballs are smothered in said sauce. These aren’t the best meatballs of all time, but the sauce more than makes up for it. photo credit: Karolina Wiercigroch Margherita Simple, classic, and reliable. photo credit: Karolina Wiercigroch Number 7 With squash, beetroot pesto, ricotta, hazelnuts and kale - this is not a salad. We repeat, this is not a salad. It is however, a very good veggie pizza that we recommend. photo credit: Karolina Wiercigroch Calabrian With ’nduja and chili, this is a hot and spicy pizza, and was our favorite option here, until we tried the Smokey Bandit. Smokey Bandit Topped with potato, pancetta, potato, truffle pecorino, and rocket, we’ve seen this pizza stop a pack of hungry wolves from attacking Robert Pattinson. True story. photo credit: Karolina Wiercigroch Ricotta and Hazlenut Dough It’s nutella pizza. What more do you want from us?" - Eileen Twum

The 28 Best London Coffee Shops With Wifi For Getting Work Done

"One of the best places to work in Hackney isn’t a coffee shop. It’s Martello Hall, a pizzeria-slash-bar on Mare Street. During the day, there’s a comfortable first-floor lounge where you can get bottomless coffee and fast wifi for a tenner, and the ground area is ideal for a casual meeting or lunch." - jake missing, rianne shlebak, daisy meager, sinead cranna

Where To Go When You Actually Want To Talk To People

"We’re not including Martello Hall because we once saw RPatz there. And yes, nothing makes friendship happen like teenage heartthrobs. We’re including it because this spot goes from day to night quicker than you can say ‘Bella and Edward 4eva’. The pizza at this London Fields bar/restaurant is really very good, and importantly served until 3am. Start with some wine on tap and stay for the inevitable ‘what’s a vegan viking pizza’ conversation with everyone from the bartender to the locals." - heidi lauth beasley, jake missing

A really great independent pub and a lovely addition to the area. It has really good vibes inside with a nice interior and a cute terrace. The vibes are good and service is fast and friendly. Paris and Daniel were really lovely and made us feel right at home. Personally I am not a fan of Aperol spritz (my friend said it was great - apparently you can tell by the ratio) so I had a limoncello spritz instead which was amazing and I haven’t seen anywhere else do them. You can get two spritz for £15 which is really good value and a pizza and pint for £15 which I will be back to try (I did see them and they looked delicious, they say the pizza chef is from Naples). I really appreciate how they had their pint prices on display. NOWHERE DOES THIS so they get extra points for that as it eliminates the stress of wondering how much it’s going to be. Anywhere that does Asahi gets a plus in my book. They have a lunch deal for any pizza for £7 which is 1010.

We visited following a stay in the area. Food was delicious only pizzas and a few snacks to be offered. Very tasty. Variety of drinks and very reasonable.

Super friendly staff, and really good pizza! Huge portion size too (don't wear a white T-shirt because you will likely spill the pizza down yourself...)

We are very local so we checked out the new version. I’ve been frequenting since 2004. Not bad, but I was freezing cold inside on a February day, put the heating on guys. The Guinness was ok but poured very badly shame because it tasted like it’s being kept well. In these days if Guinness hype, the staff clearly need some training. 3 Guinness pints by three different tenders all poured wrong. Food wise, Id like to see a better menu, Pizzas are a bit done now and thereid serious competition round these parts doing way better. You can cook lovely things in pizza ovens that aren’t pizza. We had burratta, garlic bread and I unfortunately they had run out off the Sardines, only discovered 10 mins later which was a disappointment. I think they have done an ok job on the refurb but there’s but it still not a pub. 4 stars is on the topside, average feelings for what is now a pub again, I think.

We stumbled across this lovely old pub while out looking for intimate wedding reception venues. The staff we incredibly helpful and friendly. We liked the choice of beers on tap and sampled the lovely pizzas. The private upstairs space and little outdoor terrace looked perfect. We look forward to celebrating my son's wedding there in October. The pub is so full of character that we can easily visualise how the space is going to look and feel.

We booked this venue for a 30th birthday - the space was fantastic! The staff, especially Paris who went above and beyond! were so great and really made the event special! We had lots of autonomy to decorate the room and the venue was extremely accommodating. The space was really versatile and had a private bar/outdoor area. It comfortably held 50+ guests and even a photo booth! Drinks were reasonably priced and food was really good value! Cannot recommend enough.

Really fantastic pub by London Fields park. The pizza are fantastic, the cocktails are great and the atmosphere is always chill on a week night. Sophie our waitress was lovely and made sure we had everything we needed throughout the evening!

Yelp
The food was actually pretty good I was just confused by the vibe of the place. Was it a cocktail bar? Was it a restaurant? It seemed confused. Also the service was pretty slow in the sense that I had to ask someone to take my order. But honestly it was a busy Saturday night so I can't put to much stock into that.

Yelp
A still undiscovered slice of coworking joy in the Hackney area immediately around London Fields. Martello is a hipster pub with a Nordic logo, wood fired Italian pizzas, and the best deal with coffee loving freelancers- £25/mo. for unlimited espresso coffee and coworking. There's plugs aplenty, a big, airy space with tons of light, and it's never crowded. The staff and owners are friendly and conversational. Basically, this place is the greatest.

Yelp
Ordered a couple beers from the bar and the bartender said he'd be over in two minutes to get our order. He never returned. Seemed like a nice guy. I hope he's OK. About twenty minutes later another member of the staff came over and took our order. I ordered the London Po'boy which was, predictably, nothing like a po'boy. In place of a roll it was served inside of bread that was something like naan, crispy and charred on the outside, with the ingredients smeared inside. Imagine a fancy meatball sub, stuffed inside of a hot pocket made from naan. It wasn't bad, and the price was right. All in all, an alright spot, neither exceptionally good or bad.

Yelp
Get here on a saturday for the 2 hour bottomless cocktail brunch for like 20 quid. I think its the only place in london that does a dark rum cocktail on demand like that (if im wrong let me know). Cocktails were great, good was great and the female staff memebers went above and beyond.

Yelp
Martello gives you the best of both worlds. During the week I come here to work in peace. With HotDesk prices at £20 a week and £40 a month (Unlimited coffee, tea, water included) you can put your professional hat on and set up office in one of the many areas. My favourite being in the cocktail room upstairs.. Come the weekend swap the coffee for prosecco and join in the Bottomless Brunch £20pp for 2 hours.. Can't go wrong with that. Get the weekend started with a Fizz,.. before Monday rolls back around. I've found a quiet winner right in the heart of Hackney..
