Great history to learn about and a beautiful residential area to walk through, iconic for Oak Bluffs. If you can go on a guided walking tour with the association, we highly recommend it. The tours are led by residents and the history and personal experiences you hear on the tour are wonderful and a bargain at $15 per person for 1.5 hours walking tour (no pre-registration, just show up 15 minutes before tour time at the historic open air Tabernacle). The tour ends at the Cottage Museum ($3 entrance fee is included in tour fee), which allows you to go inside a cottage that is filled with antiques and pictures…and also lovely docents/residents who have a set history speech, but will also answer questions. Even if you can’t do the guided walking tour, go wander around on your own through the maze of streets. The gingerbread, the paint colors, the flowers, the theme houses, and the architecture are all wonderful and a new surprise around every turn. Just remember, people live in these houses, so be respectful.

Definitely do a walk-through! We drove some of it, and that was nice, but you really do soak up the charm better when you're on foot. The kids weren't sure they'd enjoy it, but turns out pink, frilly houses are a big highlight with little girls and the boys were happy to skip rocks until they found the perfect "distinguished" cottage for themselves. Absolutely charming! Put it on your must-do list.

This is the place you wanna come to if you’re looking to wander through the so-called gingerbread houses. Lots of colorful cottages all along winding pathways, with a gigantic, open air tabernacle at the center of the neighborhood along with a traditional church. Many signs ask you to walk your bike and there’s not a lot of bike racks around, but you could easily park it a few blocks away in the more commercial district and then walk over.

Such a cool storybook camp. Interesting history. Very beautiful with its own characteristics. Never seen anything like this in the states. Highly recommend a visit!

Beautiful to walk around the circle of these historic gingerbread homes in Oak Bluffs. Very shady nice area also just off the main drag of shops and eateries.

I recommend walking off of the main circle. You can get up close the the houses and you can even see inside some if the people are on the porch with the door open. You can also see that these houses are somewhat modern with propane tanks and power transformers.
