The Connecticut Towns That Inspired 'Gilmore Girls,' 25 Years Later | Condé Nast Traveler

"A simple diner with a homespun feel, Marty’s Café reads like a plausible real‑life stand‑in for Luke’s: unfussy, community‑oriented, and the sort of place that anchors the town rather than calling attention to itself." - Timothy Latterner

Marty’s Cafe is such a charming little spot, perfect for a casual meal in the heart of Washington. I ordered the chicken parm panini, and while the flavors were good, there wasn’t quite enough sauce, so the marinara got a little lost beneath the cheese, chicken, and bread. Even so, it was still a tasty lunch, and the beautiful weather made it even better — their outdoor tables are a lovely place to sit and relax. Marty’s has a cozy, small-town vibe that fits perfectly with the character of Washington — a town that helped inspire the setting for Gilmore Girls. A few small tweaks to the sandwich, and this would have easily been a five-star experience.

We were visit out of state for 2 nights and because we loved our first breakfast there so much we decided to go again the morning before we left. The breakfast burrito was so good and my apple caramel iced latte was hands down the best tasting one I've ever had. It's the first time I actually was able to taste a real apple flavor. Wow.

Google
This is a great local cafe with delicious sandwiches and lunch treats. The menu is a step up from the 'usual' fare and the taste is there to back up the creative combinations. The curry chicken salad was savory and sweet. Just great! Thumbs up and recommended!

Love this cafe! You can tell the love that goes into their food. Homemade and fresh to order. Pastries are delicious and low-sugar, made with honey. Nice variety. Dog-friendly, indoor and outdoor seating.

Google
This place is so good! I got a lavender almond latte and it tasted amazing. I got the goat cheese and chicken panini and it was also very good. It’s in a very cute area as-well!

Google
Delicious food and coffee and even better service. We had a large party and the staff was very welcoming and accommodating. Highly recommend this place!

Google
To-die-for crispy quinoa bowl! Great vegetarian options and nice indoor and outdoor seating options. Awesome bakery items too!

Tara R.

Google
Quaint little cafe with a selection of salads and sandwiches. I had the taco chicken salad which was tasty and my partner had the American grilled cheese. They have fresh lemonades and a case full of desserts too. The gentleman behind the counter was very friendly and helpful. Dog friendly!

Kathleen C.

Yelp
I have been coming here for years and it is my happy place. The atmosphere is friendly and cheerful. The food in my opinion is right on! My favorites are the smoked salmon sandwich and the rainbow chickpea salad. My favorite waiter is Robin. What a kind and helpful gentleman even when it's busy and people are lined up to the door.

Yelp
Really cute cafe! I came here on a Saturday afternoon with 2 of my friends. I got a cappuccino and the tomato basil quiche. I really liked the quiche and the cappuccino. The service was fast and friendly. We also had no trouble finding seating on a Saturday

Steven Z.

Yelp
Used to be a great place, but the staff the have now--one guy in particular--are creating some sort of weird, alt-right vibe in the place. Was in there the other day, was working at a table in the corner when the guy behind the counter sat down next to me--in an almost empty restaurant--and started playing some pretty offensive videos. Lots of politics, lots of f-bombs. I asked if he had a set of headphones. What followed was a passive-aggressive exchange for the ages. Is a shame. I have lived in Litchfield County for more than 20-years. Marty's has an amazing history. Sad to see it getting ruined by one guy. Sent management a message. But never heard back, so...

Yelp
I fear this place might be a bit overhyped. Came here for lunch and the line was out of the place. No problem my friends and I were patient and able to scout a table outside. My friend who ordered for me said the person at the counter sounded miserable and stated "for some reason this is when all the Gilmore girls come here this weekend." I get it. It can be overwhelming when you have an influx of visitors. The servers also looked stressed and miserable. You can just tell the crowd was a lot for them to deal with. My friends got their food in a good amount of time. I was waiting a while to get the fall harvest salad. I had to ask an older gentlman who I think was the manager that I was still waiting for the salad as my friends were almost done with their food. He was nice but you can tell he was overwhelmed too. When I got the salad it was just nothing I envisioned and was not good. I thought it was going to be a cold salad with chopped kale and the roasted veggies on top. It was served hot instead, you can barely taste the cauliflower, and had way too much butternut squash. I unfortunately could not eat it and felt bad asking for another meal so I didn't return it. I also ordered the chicken dumpling soup and that was good. My friend had the Cuban panini and she said it was good. I tried the bread it was on and it was really good. My other friend ordered the crab burger and it was dry. I had a bit of the actual burger and it didn't taste fresh like it was sitting there and reheated. Overall I would skip this place and go to Pos Cafe for better food.

Yelp
Cute little place for a quick bite and some coffee. The staff were incredibly kind and were quick to greet us and take our order, as well as bring us our food. Really cute place with a beautiful big window. The food and drinks were great. If I lived here, I would definitely be going back. I highly recommend to anyone in the area!

Jen E.

Yelp
I was there on Sunday for lunch. As I was ordering, I overheard the server, dressed as some kind of colonial butter churner, talking about the customers to another staff member. She was speaking with utter disgust in a profanity-laced tirade. Her hostility was so extreme, and the things she was saying were so unprofessional and offensive, I wanted to leave. But I had already ordered. The fact that she wasn't fired on the spot for speaking about the hard-working people paying for food there was enough to rate this place a ZERO.

Yelp
I was shocked by the previous negative reviews. I found the staff to be extremely pleasant, and Lindsey made a special hot chocolate both times. The decor is cozy chic with a scrumptious glass display of goodies. I did return the very next morning. There is also a line of folks taking their orders to go, so obviously they are popular.

Melissa S.

Yelp
sandwich wrap was dry and main server or owner was a JERK!!! I asked for a to go bag. My friend then asked one and he made a dig to our other friend who had no leftovers and asked if she wanted a bag, too, of if she was going to wait and ask once he leaves. i'm was going to get coffee and dessert to go, but F him! I'll never return and when I declare that I mean it for life!!There's a good reason The Pantry has higher reviews.

Yelp
Food is consistently good, service is always outstanding, and a comfortable, laid-back atmosphere that is dog-friendly.

Sara T.

Yelp
I was excited to try the food and drinks here. It was very popular with a line almost out the door. I got the chocolate banana bread and it was pretty good. However, the chicken goat cheese panini tasted like the chicken had been microwaved. It was soft to the point of being inedible. I think the peppers on the sandwich were microwaved too. I could not eat much of the sandwich, and didn't appreciate being served food that was clearly something akin to Purdue microwaveable chicken strips from a cafe.

Yelp
I was really excited to check this cafe out. Drove over an hour to get there. My husband needed to use the restroom. The man working BARKED at me" are you going to order?" I said "I'm just waiting for my husband ". He then says - "you know the kitchen is closed ". I said "I'm sorry I didn't know" I went to order a drink and after I ordered they told me they didn't have any coffee and by the way they were clocking out. Needless to say we left and will not return. According to the website and the sign, they were still open for another 90 minutes. This was not a charming experience. I was not impressed.

Becca S.

Yelp
We've been to Marty's at least 5-6 times as they are one of the few consistently open cafes/lunch places in the area. Their chicken and goat cheese panini is outstanding, the bread is delicious and flavorful. The coffees are always well made, and I love the seasonal options. Things to avoid: the harvest wrap and the chicken curry wrap. The harvest wrap is billed as being chock full of veggies and kale - instead I received a wrap that has warm mesclun lettuce (which isn't a texture I ever want to eat again) and squash. No chick peas or kale or anything else. The chicken curry wrap is also laughable - it was mostly mesclun lettuce. The chicken curry salad itself had about 2 pieces of chicken, the rest was just shredded apples. Very, very odd.

Yelp
Nice little spot with alot of outdoor tables. A dog friendly spot with a few water bowls outside. Ordered an iced latte with dark chocolate it was Ok. I will try I different flavor or a smoothie next time. This will not keep me from going back. Along with my flavored iced latte I had a chocolate macadamia nut cookie which was big and yummy!!
google avatar

Stefanie L.

Yelp
Marty's cafe is so cute! When my mom and I went they had a very limited menu due to a busy harvest festival weekend, so sadly we were not able to get what we were hoping to have. However, my avocado toast and my mom's grilled cheese panini were both delicious. We also both got smoothies which were delicious. The wait time for our food was really long, but they were so busy that I think they just didn't have the staff to meet the demand. There was also just one single stall bathroom. Overall this was a great little spot and I would happily go back!

Yelp
Highly recommend! So sticking cute! It is very clean inside. The chairs are exquisite in design. The wood work throughout the entire restaurant is charming. They serve a lot of baked goods. The million dollar shortbread cookie was very good. I also tried the fall harvest wrap which had chickpeas, cranberries and some other veggies. The dish is on the sweeter side even though it is a savory item. The Premium Blender Drinks seem to be something they are known for. They are well made, I tried the lemon and coconut flavor. They incorporate Greek yogurt which is awesome. That being said, they are on the sweeter side as well. If I am ever in the area, I'd come again as they elevate healthy and good ingredients.

Yelp
I love it! friendly, welcoming... great food and good people. Very accommodating with food preferences . Try the refreshers! a mini vacation in my mouth!

Rebecca D.

Yelp
We love coming to Marty's. The coffee, baked goods, and meals are delicious and the customer service is stellar.

Laura H.

Yelp
Workers/staff were very nice and hospitable. The food was amazing, and had a great atmosphere. Service was quick which was a nice bonus!

Joanne M.

Yelp
Great for a quick pick spot for coffee/and, but not so great for food. Mediocre at best. Ambiance is great, but service is lacking.

Yelp
I like to stop by at Marty's while running errands in Washington. There are seating areas inside as well as outside the cafe. I often enjoy the meatloaf grilled cheese panini. (The focaccia bread pairs well with lemon Pellegrino.) One issue with a small cafe such as this is it seems the proportion of contents seem to depend on who is cooking at the moment, however it's always tasty.
google avatar

Yelp
We have been going to Marty's weekly for a few years and we love it there Very surprised by the negative reviews because we've never had a bad experience We were actually there today, not knowing about Gilmore weekend, and the line was out the door, so yay for Marty's Food came promptly, service was great and for those of you who had issues with the food, I'm sure they would have re-made it if you had asked Food is consistently good
google avatar

Yelp
Reminiscent of Westons... sans the pie... but a small town feel! There's a amazing array of bakery goods... the scones, the muffins, the croissants, the cookies, and the winner is the mini banana loaf! Incredibly edibles!! We went in for brunch, the avocado toast was perfect, the tomato basil quiche was good - but a bit over cooked, the green tomato breakfast hit the spot, the French toast platter consisted of those frozen strips I used to serve my kids - I'd either make fresh French toast or Deere this from the menu. They also serve salads, paninis, wraps, sandwiches, burgers, and grinders. The service was friendly, the atmosphere was quaint and cozy. Now, I'd love to see Rory and Lorelai walk in!!
google avatar

Dennise K.

Yelp
My friend and I popped in for a quick snack as we toured the area. A beautiful space with delicious pastries. Unfortunately, my decaf cappuccino was scalding hot and more of a latte (aka way too much milk). My friend enjoyed her coffee and we both loved our snacks, including my coconut macaroon and for the following morning, a yummy butter croissant.

Yelp
Great food, good coffee, nice people, and yummy pastries! We haven't tried their ice cream. They do close their kitchen at 3, but they have some baked goods and cold sandwiches in their cases. The goat cheese panini was amazing, as was the pumpkin loaf. Good amount of indoor and outside seating.

Yelp
Marty's Cafe is located in the center of Washington Depot, which is one of my favorite towns in Connecticut. I stopped there for lunch a few days ago and ordered a curry chicken salad wrap, which came accompanied by a side of potato chips. A server brought the meal to my table (I had previously ordered it and paid for it at the counter). I was also given napkins and utensils. The server and the person who took my order were very courteous. This is a very casual place with a relaxed atmosphere. It's clean and comfortable. I found the food and the coffee to be very satisfying.

Yelp
We were hungry after a long hike and were about to hit up one of our favorites in New Milford when lo and behold, this sweet little cafe caught our eye from the road. TLDR: Vibe: 5. Food: 3. You order inside and pay, then put a number on the table of your choice. (Plenty of outdoor seating to choose from on our visit.) Nice wait staff bring the food to you. Pros: - We love that it's dog friendly and offers a menu for pups!!!!! We've been shamelessly freeloading off of other people's fur babies ever since our first born passed away. On our visit, many people were there with pups and generous about sharing. - Our mango and lemon-coconut smoothies were fabulous. Cons: - The kids' menu bagel pizza was fairly bad -- exactly what you would make at home with a pre-packaged grocery store bagel + Ragu / Presto brand pasta sauce + heaping fistfuls of shredded mozzarella + exactly 2 slices of standard issue pepperoni + toaster oven set to under-toast. - No temperature offered, none requested. The burger patty came cooked well done and was, not surprisingly, pretty dry. Cheddar cheese was not melted on. My non-picky pardner deemed it "ok." In-the-Middle: - A curried chicken salad plate was fair, made with a lot of apple and celery, not much chicken (which I happen to enjoy, but others may not). I'm not overly fond of mayonnaise and this version was doable in my view. The smallish-for-CT serving of salad (think Manhattan ladies-who-lunch-sized) came with a few slices of yellow cheddar, a few cashews, and a slice of multigrain bread. - The children's hot dog came on a reportedly delicious bun. Primary consumer only consumed 1/3 despite being hungry. Unclear what happened, there. Overall, the place is so pleasant that we're sure to come back for more smoothies -- and maybe give the food another try or two.

Yelp
We stopped into Marty's since we heard it was the "Luke's Diner" of this Gilmore Girls inspired area and we were right pleased! With a plethora of both snacky and more filling items and a gorgeous outdoor view of the area, we sat and enjoyed a wonderful afternoon snack !

Samantha S.

Yelp
Cute place but I ordered a cheese croissant and they asked me if I wanted it warmed up. I said yes and they microwaved it and ruined it. Why would a cafe do that? I'm sure it would have been great warmed in a toaster oven but it ended up soggy and gross. Probably wouldn't go again except maybe for coffee and a muffin?

Chris W.

Yelp
Delicious food, vegetarian options available. A nice place to come after hiking after Hidden Valley. You can bring your dogs, too, inside or out. Be prepared for a long wait, however.

Nicole R.

Yelp
The food was less than mediocre. They're so called short rib. Sandwich was did not even have hardly any meat in it. When we requested meat they brought out a few slices of microwaved something flavorless very disappointing. The pastrami is microwaved store deli meat on dried bread. Horrible.

Justin L.

Yelp
A neighborhood place that makes one smile. Cozy and delicious lattes and desserts that hit the spot.

Shannon N.

Yelp
My daughter and I came here as part of our Gilmore Girls road trip. It was recommended on one of the itinerary sites. It took close to an hour and a half for our food to arrive. Then when we got it, my burger was ice cold and the cheese on my daughter's grilled cheese was clearly burnt. I asked for a refund, which they were happy to provide. So happy in fact they gave us $20 more than I paid. I called her back over and she just shook her head. She was lovely. Unfortunately, this was a really really bad experience.
google avatar

Megan K.

Yelp
I was very sadly disappointed in Marty's Cafe. So people have compared it to being kind of like Luke's Diner from GG and I definitely did not get that vibe. My coffee was also atrocious. While I am all for recycling and saving the environment, ICED COFFEE DOES NOT BELONG IN WARM TO GO CUP TYPE CUPS. The barista also gave me waaay too many pumps of flavoring in the coffee and it was like liquid diabetes in a warm cup. Very very sad about this, definitely will not be coming back in the future.

L B.

Yelp
Mediocre Reuben sandwich and distracted server who was more interested in texting than helping me. This place could be so much better with a little training in the front and the back of the house.

Steve M.

Yelp
Stopped for lunch on a Sunday. Had 2 very good sandwiches and an ok iced tea. Very fair prices.
google avatar

Angela P.

Yelp
The staff were lifeless and very slow, the chocolate chip cookie was great but, the coffee is HORRIBLE! I got 3 shots of espresso over ice and I felt like I was drinking coffee flavored water. They're were people going in WITHOUT masks and it made me feel uncomfortable especially cause I have a baby with me who I never brought in. The best part is the outside seating. Very chill and relaxing. The only reason I ended up in this town was because of the show Gilmore Girls lol which I didn't really see it but it was a cute town! Very cute town!
google avatar

Ashley B.

Yelp
The place is adorable and comfortable and the bakery offerings and coffee offering are vast. However the staff was somewhere between cold and unwelcoming and they don't serve food 2 hours before closing which multiple customers remarked on while I was there. Maybe list it online someplace? There were some packaged food and chips available but nothing fresh or warm. Also the girl working the counter would do so well with a simple smile or inviting word. I'll try it again once more before moving on.
google avatar

Karen M.

Yelp
We went to Washington because we heard it was an inspiration to Gilmore Girls, a show we enjoy. It is a small and quaint town. We didn't realize that many businesses there would be closed on Sunday, but thankfully Marty's and the neighboring independent book store were open. There was a decent wait to get in for lunch, but thats to be expected. Most of the staff was very friendly and they were all well-versed on COVID policies, and procedures, and everyone was wearing masks. The food was good and the portions were decent, but a little pricey. This is supposed to be similar to Luke's Diner in GG, which it is not, but definitely worth the trip id you're in the area.

Yelp
We stopped by for a late lunch this afternoon. There was lots of pleasant seating outside and we took one of the picnic tables. My husband had a chicken and feta cheese panini and I had a chicken and avocado wrap. Both of us took the house chips. We ordered inside and took a number out to our table and they served us. We both loved our sandwiches. Not only great food but it pleasant environment. This is definitely a repeat experience. Next time we'll get some of the beautiful desserts or ice cream. Hard to resist today.

Barbara S.

Yelp
Lovely place, lovely coffee but outrageously rude woman at the counter. Why would you have someone like her working with customers? Made my experience there extremely disappointing.

Margaret M.

Yelp
Coffee was ok but woman behind the counter was extremely nasty and rude. Never again will I go there.
google avatar

A R.

Yelp
Quaint friendly local cafe. Stumbled upon it while staying at an air bnb in the area on a weekend getaway. The Litchfield hills don't disappoint when it comes to experiencing the best of New England. Meatloaf Sammie was a big win!
google avatar

Rachel P.

Yelp
Went in for a quick breakfast stop and in search of a "Luke's" vibe (did not deliver on that front) it was clean and had decent (albeit awkward) service.... very dog friendly (with a dog menu...?) but...paper menus aren't current...breakfast sandwich wasn't warm ...fried green tomato sandwich was just a sliced, plain red tomato and the coffee was barely saved by the almond milk.... overall a confusing spot but good location

Rich S.

Yelp
visited for lunch with a party of four. Ordered at the counter, sat at a table inside and waited 20min and still no food. finally asked someone and found out our order never made it to the kitchen. Waited another 10min and finally got our food with a half hearted apology. The excuse was, oh we have so many orders which wasn't true. I didn't find the help to be very welcoming or overly friendly. kind of matter Ft of fact service, you know, take it or leave it. For our first visit there I wasn't too impressed.
google avatar

Madison M.

Yelp
Super cute spot! The food was good, but nothing spectacular. Employees were very friendly! I liked the modern decor inside and the variety of seating options (I sat on a couch while others in my party were in chairs at the same table). The pastries looked really yummy, but we didn't try any. Prices very reasonable!
google avatar

Beth B.

Yelp
What a wonderful little spot! The food was fantastic, the staff super fast, friendly and on top of sanitizing. The salad was great & the soup absolutely amazing! Can't wait to come back!

Aida G.

Yelp
Cute place with yummy baked goods and the food is fresh and delicious as well. The staff is super friendly and helpful! Oh and there chicken corn chowder yums!!!

Yelp
Adorable cafe located in the center of Washington Depot Connecticut. Tastefully decorated inside with an abundance of seating, along with some tables outside for those of you with your furry friends. My husband and I stopped here with our small pup after hiking up the waterfall at Kent Falls State Park (highly recommend!) You order at the counter, and they bring your food to you. I ordered the turkey club with a side of chips. The turkey club was delicious, and it was served on some sort of wheat bread with seeds in it. I should have asked for white bread since I shouldn't really eat seeds, however, I didn't see the bread type on the menu. I could have just missed it. Regardless, I ate what I could and enjoyed it! We sat outside, and it was clean and quiet. After our lunch, we were craving some coffee and ordered two lattes to go. I had the caramel latte and my husband had the dark chocolate latte. I enjoyed my coffee very much, even though it was pretty basic. My husband's latte made the whole car smell like tootsie rolls which isn't a bad thing! I also saw peach and lavender flavor for the lattes which I found very interesting, I just wasn't feeling too adventurous when it came to my latte. I highly recommend, and I will be sure to visit for a bite to eat whenever I'm in the area!

Yelp
I had been by here a billion times...and had never tried this place. BF likes the Gilmore Girls so in the process of going on the "where I grew up" tour through the area, I took him here since allegedly Luke's Diner is modeled after Marty's, though I don't agree with that at all. (The Depot being the basis for Stars Hollow however, I do agree with) Luke would never have wifi or such foo foo things as paninis. ;) That said, I very much enjoyed my chicken and goat cheese panini. The shop was very cute & comfortable so we hung out for a while and just enjoyed our lunch before exploring Hickory Stick afterwards.
