I think Marty's Place North might be my FAVORITE spot for excellent dinner and drinks in the Northwoods. Despite my family being from the area, and visiting the Northwoods countless times, I had never been to Marty's before this past weekend.
We arrived to the bar well before our reservation and sat at the bar for a few drinks. The bartender was friendly, fast, and attentive. When we sat down for or actual reservation, the waitress was warm and welcoming. She brought us refills on drinks quickly, and delivered the relish tray (a true supper club staple) which was filled with two delicious cheeses, tuna salad, excellent dill dip, an assortment of crackers and veggies.
My brother and father both had the french onion soup to accompany their meal and raved about how delicious it was. While I was nibbling on my salad (standard fare, fresh and pretty simple...can't ask for much more), and the freshly baked bread and blueberry muffins came out, I thought I died and went to supper club heaven. In fact, if I could get a giant case of those muffins delivered to me in Chicago, that'd be great :)
I chose to have the roast duck since our waitress boasted about how world famous it is and I am SO incredibly glad I did! First of all, you receive an entire half-roast duck. The skin is crispy, the meat is well seasoned, and the duck was roasted so well that it literally fell off the bone. In fact, one simple twist of the leg bone and it came cleanly off of the meat. I took our waitresses' recommendation and had my roast duck with the wild rice which was delicious. A few other family members had the mashed potatoes (which they enjoyed) and my mother decided to have her perfectly cooked filet with the au gratin potatoes.
All in all, I can't wait to get back up north and visit Marty's Place again and try all of the other offerings. While it might be a bit of a drive from Minocqua, I can't recommend it enough for anyone looking for a delicious meal in a traditional Wisconsin supper club.
