Marufukuro (Kyoto, Kyoto Prefecture) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Kyoto’s Marufukuro Hotel occupies a 1930s building that was once home to Nintendo’s corporate headquarters. (The Nintendo Playing Card Co. sign still stands on an exterior wall.) Its interior renovation and its modern annex are the work of the modernist architect Tadao Ando. All 18 rooms and suites vary in size and style, but are uniformly attractive and well-equipped. The library is full of materials related to Nintendo’s history, while the restaurant, Carta, serves 'New Western' cuisine with Japanese ingredients and seasonings under the direction of chef and author Ai Hosokawa." - Tablet Hotels

If you are looking at this review you likely already know everything you need to know about what this hotel is. Just know that it lives up to the expectations and is an incredible love letter to the history of Nintendo brought to life in a thoughtful and well considered way. If you are on the fence don’t be, book it. It’s in a nice quiet part of town and there are lots of cute places to eat and drink near by or a short walk / underground train to other parts of town. The staff are very attentive and spoke very good English, the welcome and the tour was very well done was a great starting point for our stay. Room was very comfortable and had everything you would need, including an included mini bar. Highly recommended.

An wonderful stay again! We came here 2 years ago and loved the hotel so much, we decided we had to stay again this time as part of our Honeymoon. |The hotel itself is beautiful. They really put a lot of time and effort into designing the hotel while keeping as many original features as possible. It gives the hotel a unique look and charm. |As adults who grew up playing (and still play) Nintendo games, we loved all of the Nintendo memorabilia and the nods to the former Nintendo offices and home throughout the hotel.|The staff members were always polite and would go out of their way to help. We were really surprised and grateful that they sent some Christmas cards to family for us, rather then have us go to the main post office in Kyoto.|We stayed in the balcony room which was clean and spacious. We really liked that there was a sofa and armchair or the chairs on the balcony that we could sit on when we wanted to relax after a busy day. It is nice to sit somewhere that isn’t the bed. |The shower pressure was excellent, very powerful. The bed was super comfy and the pillows super soft.|We really liked the library lounge, which is self service. A nice, quiet place to relax before heading to your room in the evening. The lounge area downstairs is also very nice, we really enjoyed the snacks and drinks provided in there. |We would recommend Marufukuro to anyone and we would love to stay here a third time!

Bespoke luxury in the Shimogyo Ward. It’s Walkable from Kyoto Station, but in a quiet area. A small train station is just across the bridge over Kamo River. Some stay for the Nintendo history of which you’ll fine books and items in the beautiful library bar (self service drinks!), others for the Tadao Ando architecture. When booking, choose whether you want to stay in one of the older rooms, or in the Ando designer annex. Great service, beautiful rooms. Appreciate the introductory tour. The hotel has a restaurant that does a good omakase tempura dinner.

Located in a quiet neighborhood in Kyoto away from the hustle and bustle, but at the same time easily accessible by train (closest train station is a 5-mintue walk). They did an excellent job maintaining the historic elements of this once former headquarters for Nintendo. It felt like I stepped back in time once I entered!||The entire staff was friendly and professional the whole time. They spoke English as well, so don’t worry if your Japanese isn’t that great.||Stayed in the Deluxe King Room, which was in the Main Building on the third floor. Thanks to the corner location, lots of natural light came in from two sides of the room. The room was spacious with a large comfy bed. Adjacent to the bed was a little sitting around with a sofa, which came in handy after walking all day around the city and you just want to sit down and relax. You can also relax there with the complimentary local snacks and drinks provided in the room.||The Nintendo-ness here continued with a cool library with lots of Nintendo related knickknacks and books you could easily spend a good amount of time exploring. There was also a morning tour where you walked around with one of the staff and they explained the history of the building and some architectural highlights. I thought this was a very nice touch.||Breakfast was good and had a fair selection of cold and hot foods to choose from. They also have complementary alcoholic drinks during the day and a self-serve bar on the second floor next to the library. I don’t drink, but still, it was a generous offer.||Overall, I had a wonderful stay here. It wasn’t cheap compared to other hotel options in the area, but I felt the amazing service I got, the room, and the numerous amenities justified the price tag. Also, this place definitely satisfied the Nintendo fanboy in me!

We stayed at the Marufukuro hotel for three nights in a junior suite. This hotel was outstanding- from the service, to the historical significance to the architecture and every detail in between. I loved that each building was different, that our room came with an onsen bath and that the bar and library were open 24/7 (especially for my husband who needed to take early morning work calls without disturbing anyone). The location is somewhat residential and quiet, but still within walking distance of so much. It was the perfect refuge after some of the VERY busy sites in Kyoto. 10/10 for us and we would return in a heartbeat as well as recommend to our friends who are looking for an intimate and unique hotel experience in Kyoto.

Staying at Marufukuro was the highlight of our trip to Kyoto. From the moment we arrived, the staff went above and beyond (Especially Joe) to make us feel welcome; they are incredibly helpful, attentive, and clearly proud of this beautiful property. The hotel manages to feel like a peaceful sanctuary tucked away from the city’s hustle. The amenities are top-tier, the guest lounge is thoughtfully stocked, and every corner of the hotel is a design lover's dream. After a long day of exploring, returning to the room was a treat. The bed was exceptionally comfortable, providing some of the best sleep I’ve had while traveling. If you are looking for a relaxing, high-end experience with a unique historical soul, I cannot recommend Marufukuro enough. It is worth every penny!

I cannot recommend Marufukuro enough - our favourite hotel we stayed in in Japan. The staff were helpful and friendly from the first moment we arrived, and were always there if we needed anything. Our room was stunning, and very spacious for Japan. It truly felt luxurious, even the bathroom (which we've found are often quite utilitarian here). The lounges and the library, with its self-serve bar, were a wonderful touch, and we loved being shown the layout and historic touches when we arrived. When we come back to Kyoto, we will definitely want to stay here again. Such a peaceful, luxury oasis.

This is my second visit, and the experience remains consistently comfortable. The services and assistance provided by all staff members are thorough and attentive, and the room is very spacious. The overall stay has been excellent. Even setting aside the Nintendo elements, this is still a hotel I would very much like to experience. The only drawback is that my wallet is not sufficient to allow me to stay here for a full week.
