10 Stunning Feats of Edible Art

"On a quaint, stone walking street in Szentendre, Hungary, an art gallery exists at the intersection of Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum and Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory.  The Szamos marzipan empire occupies a sizable stretch of road, welcoming visitors with its candy-striped awnings, a summertime ice cream stand, and an assortment of confections beckoning from the window. But inside, more than edible delights await. Szamos also operates a sweet, nutty exhibit filled with marzipan art.  Guests can ponder Budapest’s parliament building, Princess Diana, and Mickey Mouse, all immortalized in sugary almond paste. Using candy as a medium, artists meticulously crafted scenes depicting fairy tales, bible stories, cartoon characters, and celebrities. The space highlights the art of marzipan-making, as well as the work of Mátyás Szamos and Károly Szabó, two renowned Hungarian confectioners.  After working up an appetite, patrons can pick up local delicacies such as Unicum, wine, spices, cured meats, and an assortment of sweet treats in the attached shop." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Amazing little shop with a wide variety of Marzipan. This was the first time I had a marzipan and it was amazing. They have wide variety of pure marzipan with flavors and a lot with chocolates, but my favorites was the pure almond marzipan. Definitely a unique stop for me. Just wish I could order more online. Definitely a must go place if you stop in this cute little town.

I was amazed by what can be done with marzipan. The artistry is incredible. I liked that it says who created each piece and how many hours were spent on it. The price is 9,000 forints, and 30,000 with a guided tour – a fair price. It's a shame there isn't a workshop for children.

It’s definitively worth a visit but it should be called a gallery rather than a museum. There are some impressive pieces of art but I would have liked to know more about how the marzipan is made and how the sculptures are made.

Beautiful restaurant ambience and collection of cakes was mind blowing. Staff was very friendly and speaks English. Other items too looked delicious over the counter, need more visits to try all of them. Hot chocolate was yum! Due to time and other plans couldn’t visit the museum. But had one of the best cakes ever. This is must visit shop and try some cakes , hot chocolate and infused teas when you visit Szentendre. To get access to toilets speak to the member of staff as you would need coupons.

1 | Traditional confectionery with historical interior, which includes a marzipan museum. 2 | The menu includes ice cream and a wide selection of different cakes. The price of most of them is between 1100 Ft and 1300 Ft. For some reason, there is an extra charge of 100 Ft for eating at the table. I had a good Sachr with which whipped cream was served separately in a small bowl. 3 | It is possible to pay by card. 4 | There are around 10 tables in the patisserie, there is plenty of seating. The interior resembles a traditional patisserie. 5 | I found it a bit strange that the toilets on the first floor are paid and located behind the turnstile.

I love Marzipan so I knew I had to visit this place during my trip to Budapest as soon as I found out it existed. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it was SO great! My country has no tradition of creating sculptures from marzipan, so I was completely overwhelmed by the elaborate and beautiful works created from it. The establishment contains dozens of sculptures by dozens of artists, and the works represent may thousands of hours of labor. From life size Michael Jackson and Princess Diana to elaborate manger scenes to Disney cartoon characters to Storybook characters to the Hungarian Parliament Building — all show such dedication to minute detail and artful creation. I loved it and ended up spending much more time poring over these marzipan masterpieces than I dreamed I would. A shop at the end of the museum visit has lots of souvenirs, edible and otherwise.
