The Hamptons Guide: Vogue Editors Pick Their Favorite Restaurants, Hotels, Shops, and More | Vogue

"About a third of Shelter Island is this beautifully maintained nature preserve that offers a well maintained network of trails through wetlands, woods, open meadows, and gorgeous empty coastline—it's the best hike in the Hamptons and a place to get lost in during the summer." - Elise Taylor

Beautiful hiking trails. I saw a turtle summer bathing :) lots of birds. Very quiet and peaceful. There is a bathroom at the entry/exit! Long trails and short trails- grab a map and explore. Tons of benches along the way if you want to rest.

Indeed, one of the best Nature Conservancy preserves, it combines multiple landscapes in one hike from woods to meadows to bay shores. I have visited on early September weekday (ample parking was available in mid-afternoon) and hiked red and green trails making a loop. Meadow/shore views are gorgeous, maybe best in Long Island (comparing to Caumsett and Connetquot state parks, for instance). Nature center was opened with lots of info about Shelter Island and trailhead had printed trail maps (rarity these days).

Mashomack Preserve is a quiet park with many trails filed with wildlife and plants. Very beautiful and a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the Hamptons or North Fork. Even a place to plug in an EV. Visitor Center is great with many displays, a kids corner and bathrooms. Big parking lot otherwise and picnic tables. Definitely go off your paying by while on Shelter Island.

What a beautiful nature preserve. It is well marked with a variety of trails. It was a gorgeous fall day which added to our enjoyment. Parking is limited so many people were parked along the sides of the main road as you approach the entrance.

Beautiful site to hike, even in the winter. It might be the better time to visit as the tourist population of the island is so low. They have some fairly easy hikes, at varying distances to choose from. I think we ended up hiking around 6 miles all counted. The only real difficulty was how muddy some parts of the trail were, due to the recent rains.

Absolutely stunning nature walk! Saw a lot of wildlife along the way :) However, it was abounding in ticks. Even while constantly staying on the main path, I had to during our ca. 8 mile walk, brush off at least 40 ticks. And at home while checking myself I had 4 more crawling on me. (I wore long pants, which is probably why I didn't notice them - my friends wore shorts, and while brushing several off during the walk, none of them could find any on them once checking back home). So bring repellent! And wear shorts, do you can spot any ticks crawling on your legs.

So beautiful! We did red to green to brown. It was so scenic and peaceful. We saw a lot of wildlife, including this big turkey and also a muskrat swimming in the pond by the manor! Def take the hike

Free - right near south ferry. Nature preserve with flat hiking trails- not muddy after a morning of rain due to sunny afternoon. Benches available
