This mosque (and Islamic Centre) is one of the most iconic landmarks in Malé, due to its grand architecture and its visible golden dome.
It is the Grand Friday Mosque — important for Friday (Jumu’ah) prayers, and a central place of worship.
The mosque is named after Sultan Muhammad Thakurufaanu Al-Auzam, a national hero in the Maldives who liberated the country from Portuguese rule in the 16th century.
Many visitors to Malé stop here to see the mosque, not just for prayer but for its architectural beauty. The mosque can accommodate up to ~5,000 people. it's the 2nd largest mosque of male.
