Masseria Fontana di Vite (Matera, Basilicata) 6 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Italian farmhouse hotels come in a variety of styles, from the classic pastel Tuscan variety to something like the Masseria Fontana di Vite, its sun-bleached stone exteriors exhibiting an almost Moorish profile against the rough landscape of Basilicata. It’s set in the hills outside Matera, the famous cave city, and its name, which translates as something like “Fountain of Life,” refers to a legendary nearby spring — precious indeed in these dry latitudes." - Tablet Hotels

Beautiful masseria built against the rock. Service was the low point: unprofessional and showing minimal effort. A little rude at times. The other low point is location. The masseria is in an industrial zone. Overall disappointing and deginitely not a 4 star experience.

This place is magnificent and you feel like home. Spent three days with my family, everyone in the staff was kind, welcoming, and helpful. Rooms are spacious, very clean and comfortable. The food is fantastic, there is a great effort to value the typical products and wines from the area. Well done to the staff, we really enjoyed our stay.

A wonderful place to stay with staff that was incredibly welcoming, friendly and helpful. The room was quite big and had all the modern facilities we could want, such as TV, a big bathroom with a rain shower, shower necessities, towels for the swimming pool. We had a private terrace that looked out over the fields that surround the masseria. It is located a couple kilometers outside of Matera, making it perfect for visiting the city but also enjoying a peaceful vacation. The breakfast is extensive and they offer to the option to have dinner too, which I definitely recommend trying at least once.

Fantastic and relaxing resort. Far few km from Matera center, with a delightful country area all around. Great silence, very comfortable rooms, but the top of the top is the restaurant! A great quality of foods and wines. Highly recommended

What a beautiful place! Our first encounter was with Francesco who is warm and welcoming. He showed us to our room and told us about the history of the hotel. We had two fantastic dinners at the hotel. The chef is amazing!! I read about the food before we got here and boy, it didn't disappoint! Our favorite person was Erasmo! Like their young talented chef, if they can keep Erasmo! Full of knowledge and so passionate about the area. His recommendations were amazing! We went to Ginosa and Gravina which were so special. He told us about Altamura which we visited and has dinner at a great restaurant, Calvi! Back to the hotel and amazing staff, delicious food, beautiful afternoons by the pool, comfortable room, great music, amazing atmosphere, if you get a chance to stay here, you are in for a treat!

Beautiful masseria, nearby Matera. The drawback of the central location is that the place feels more touristy rather than authentic, when compared to other masseria's. The room was good, however it couldn't get chill inside, even with the AC on Power the whole night. The breakfast was ok, choices were limited, fruit juice was not freshly made.

This place exceeded my expectations. I don't think that the pictures you see online show what a true jewel this is, in the middle of the country-side, just outside the stunning Sassi of Matera. I grew up near this place, so for me this should be no big surprise, but the way the owners have re-designed this ancient "masseria" (big, rich farm-house) deserves praises. The so called "standard" room was in itself an oasis for the soul. Everything inside this place is poetic, artsy but not pretentious, neither "fake genuine". You go to this place to write poems, to read philosophy ... or simply to enjoy your free time. ||Now for the little things that could be improved, in my opinion: above all, I missed someone to talk about wines and grapes at my dinner-table. My otherwise very nice waiter could and should learn the difference between natural and non natural wines, for instance, just in case a picky wine-lover such myself shows up. I also missed a bit of a personal welcome from the owner, who was often around there, but who greeted me ... but I understand he sees so many people coming and going. I also would have liked a child-free area somewhere, sometime ... BUT all in all this was a fantastic experience. I have traveled a lot, and I have my needs ... at the same time I do own myself a masseria nearby, so I can really see what a great job the owners have done to enhance our traditions in a classy and loving way. I am picky all right, but this place conquered me. BRAVISSIMI

Lovely hotel just a 10 minute drive from Matera. The rooms are all unique and creatively designed. They have stayed true to the historic nature of the building while adding some modern touches. The breakfast is a bit sparse, but we did find out after that you can order eggs and omelettes. Great place to stay close to Matera with a pool!
