On the Grid : Massolit Books & Café

"For the perfect combination of great coffee and a good English-language book, visit the friendly and tranquil Massolit in the heart of the Jewish Quarter, where coffees are made from direct-trade beans and tea specialties are served with cookies, brownies, quiches, and cakes, all courtesy of a skilled pastry chef. The bookshelves hold real treasures for book lovers, including an outstanding collection of volumes about politics, history, and literature." - We Love Budapest

a not-so-hidden gem! adorable place that i went to a lot to study and escape my apartment. it's exactly what you want a cafe to be but it can get crowded at times so make sure to get there early. they also usually have good art and some little crafts which make it a nice place to get gifts for your jealous friends. food is good too!

Really cute cafe/library! The vibes are aesthetic and there are pastries and drinks. The barista was lovely, however I would not go there to work personally. Maybe a bit too distracting and aesthetic for focusing amd working. I ordered a chai latte, it came warm and nice! (To be honest ive had better)

Extremely overrated. I’m honestly disappointed because after reading the reviews I was convinced that it was gonna be a good coffee shop. The place looks cool and aesthetic but it’s not actually worth it. You can only read books if you buy them. Otherwise you cannot touch them. Staff were not particularly friendly. My matcha latte did not taste good, it didn’t have flavor and it was watery. 🥲 My friend had the chai latte and it was kinda bad. It tasted just like hot milk. The pie was good but nothing exceptional. Cute just for pictures and cozy. Overrated.

During my one-week stay in Budapest I visited the cafe bookshop three times, staying longer each time, feeling at home here amongst books and trying many of the delicious savoury and sweet tarts, pies and bagels, as well as chai lattes: don’t miss the spicy turmeric latte! A very relaxing and friendly place to hang out. Thank you to the workers who look after the visitors so well

beautiful and cosy cafe/bookstore. i love this concept of buying a book and sitting down reading it while sipping a cup of coffee. i also love the vibe of independent bookstore like this, as it gives you a very warm and welcoming feeling that you cannot find in big bookstore. the coffee was also good and the staffs were friendly. i came early on a thursday morning and just 15 mins after i arrived, the store was filled with guests and tourists, but the noise was manageable.

Cozy coffe shop. Excellent place to have an espresso and a fresh baked plumb pie. Wonderful coffee place to relax. Barista was pleasant, polite and spoke English. 100% reccomended!

To be honest I felt a little underwhelmed having seen reviews of this place, though it was busy so clearly popular so each to their own. We didn't have a drink as there wasn't anywhere to sit which is fair enough, it's quite cramped but they did have a good selection of books and the staff were friendly and knowledgeable. The "secret garden" they advertise looks frankly quite derelict but the front of the shop exterior is a great look 📚

Beautiful cafe, stuffed with Hungarian authors and fun clever things things to pour over in every nook and cranny. Randomly assorted new and old books, gorgeous courtyard in the back, bookshelves assorted by color. Immediately fall in love with everything about this place. And that’s not even starting on how it blew my socks off with the coffee, the plum cinnamon pie was great too. Lily, the barista, was lovely and talked at length about the books there. Great help. Cannot recommend this place enough.

People need stop being irresponsible giving bad reviews to businesses because they don't achieve their tiktok expectations. "The vibe was not right", "there was no place for me to sit", "the garden everybody loves its not right for my standards" are not reason for a bad review. It will definitely not harm a place like this, such a important place for its community, but can definitely destroy other places, that can be a businesses of a life dream. Please stop being so spoiled and harm businesses because you think the world its there only to serve you. This bookstore keep amazing as the first time I visited. There are definitely more places to sit and less books, but they are still able to keep the purpose of the place against the desire for perfect pictures and performative life.
