"Signature Drinks at Squirrel's Nest Bar Head south of town to the tiny beach bar at Mata Rocks Resort. Squirrel’s Nest is a peaceful spot to enjoy a few cocktails while taking in views of Belize’s well-renowned Barrier Reef. For years, I called Mata Rocks my hotel of choice when I visited Belize as a tourist. I spent the bulk of my days lounging by the pool and chatting with the bartenders at Squirrel’s Nest. Longtime bartenders Sherilyn and Criselda are two of the nicest people on the island and serve up some pretty awesome drinks. Try Mata Rock's specialties like the Mata Colada or Pink Squirrel. Open daily, closing hours vary but usually around 8-8:30pm."

We just left Mata Rocks after a week long trip. The resort is Newly renovated with an expanded bar and pool area. House keeping kept the rooms nice and clean. New sheets everyday. They are finishing up expanding the beach area and sea wall. I do wish we would have known about the construction before hand, however Xavier and James really made the trip with their recommendations and conversations. Pull up, have a seat and talk to some local. You will have a great time!

It’s clear this property is loved and well cared for. It’s a small operation, seeing the same staff everyday helped them get to know us. They helped with recommendations and setting up golf cart rental delivery. The pool is undergoing a renovation and should be done very soon, it looks like it’ll be nice. There is a dog that visits the bar named Max who is a very good boy. The room we stayed in was recently updated with modern features.

We stayed at Mata Rocks mid November 2025. Each of the guest rooms has an ocean view, ours also had a mini kitchen. The rooms have dark Belizian wood floors, comfortable beds, mini split for AC and a sliding door to a deck overlooking the pool. The staff at the hotel is top notch. They are friendly and helpful. Ernesto is the GM, email him regarding any question you have, and you'll get a prompt reply. The hotel is located in a quieter section, south of the main town. The hotel has a bar and restaurant, plus there are restaurants nearby (Robin's for local food and The Hidden Treasure were our favorites). There are two grocery stores nearby. There are dive boats leaving from docks within walking distance from the hotel.

We honeymooned at Mata Rocks 25 years ago and came back for our 25th wedding anniversary. So much has changed and we were told at check in that they are currently doing a bunch of work on the place. It was obvious things were in motion on the property. We had some hiccups along the way with no wifi, AC broke for a while, water shut off without warning, but in the end, we still had a good time. Honestly, Javier, James and our wonderful housekeeper (sorry, I didn’t get her name) made our stay memorable. The staff here really shine and we were grateful for all they did to make our stay pretty great.

I spent 6 days here in May 2025. This place (rooms especially) is in need of TCL but they seem to be working on that with a new beach front bar and dining area opening soon. Despite this, staff was able to quickly react to any specific needs or inquiries. I had an issue with my AC and it was fixed within the hour. Wifi is not great. I was often disconnected. I still recommend Mata Rocks because of the value and location. It’s located just a few steps from my dive shop (BPDC) for a third of the price of other neighbouring hotels. Thank you to Anita and Brayan for making my stay very pleasant!

Great hotel! Very accommodating staff. Getting taxis and golf carts were super easy, and they were available for any question we had! Not swimmable though, even though it’s beach front. There’s so much sea grass (which also smelled kinda bad) I’d recommend if you’re looking for a cheaper option to stay in San Pedro, though. It wasn’t walkable to much, but the golf carts were great.

Lovely small hotel along the beach with very comfortable beds and super friendly attentive staff. Bryant was very helpful!|Beach front but not a swim beach. |Food was great.|Could likely use a restock of kitchenettes but anything we didn’t have, staff got for us. Very attentive. Recommended local places to eat that were a hot and decently priced golf cart suggestions. ||Would recommend if you want to be a little out of town and like to cook a few of your own meals.

There is Wi-fi but NO INTERNET CONNECTION, the room pretty small. The seaweed smell so bad can’t even sleep all night long. The pool too small to swim. There is no breakfast as complimentary.
