Our Readers' Favorite Resorts in Central America of 2025

"Nestled on Ambergris Caye, this resort is a luxe, seaside retreat where guests often spend time relaxing in thatched-roof casitas or villas, lounging in hammocks, and enjoying cocktails with ocean views from a popular tree-top bar. It caters to snorkelers and divers with complimentary snorkel gear and kayaks, a reef just offshore, and the ability to arrange boat excursions to marine sites such as Hol Chan Marine Reserve—home to a rich diversity of fish and coral—making it a favored base for exploring Belize’s barrier reef." - Sarah Bruning Sarah Bruning Sarah Bruning is the special projects and surveys editor at Travel + Leisure, where she has been on staff since 2018. Matachica has been my wife and I's go to resort in Belize for the past 4 years. For our fifth visit, we brought our three daughters (minding the 16+ policy) and stayed in one of the luxury villas instead of a casita for the first time. Everything was amazing! Jorge and his entire team always take such great care of their guests and treated our family like their family. They helped us plan excursions to the Mayan site of Lamanai as well as snorkeling trips to Mexico Rocks and Hol Chan/Shark Ray Alley. At the resort itself are two fantastic restaurant options. One of our favorite things is that all the produce is not only local, but comes from their sister resort Gaia (which we also highly recommend) and is grown in their garden using traditional techniques. There's a wonderful pool area with views of the ocean/reef. We recommend Taco Tuesday when they have live music and fantastic drink specials to go with their amazing tacos. Another thing we love is how committed they are to supporting their community. Encouraging their guests to "Pack with Purpose" and bring school supplies that they donate to local schools. I could go on all day how wonderful the people are who work at Matachica and how much they care about their guests. We plan to continue returning every year.

This resort is very thoughtfully designed. It’s beautiful and the staff are very detail oriented. It was my birthday and they laid out a super cute happy birthday sign and towel cake and balloons! We especially enjoyed Carlos at the bar, Julio for breakfast and then Job at the captions dinner. |Obviously the Segrassum was a huge bummer but the pool made up for that and the complimentary shuttles to Secret Beach (which is a must) and Bliss Beach. Also the onsite snorkel tours helps break up the pool time too. ||The food is incredible. The drinks were fairly weak which was a bit disappointing for the price but it’s not the end of the world. ||TBH the only complaint we had was we found the bed really uncomfortable but that’s just bc we like firmer beds lol and that the rooms get humid. But you’re in a tropical paradise so we expected that ◡̈ ||Overall, this resort is immaculate, quiet and romantic. If you’re looking for some true R&R this is your spot!

The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful! The food was outstanding, and the rooms were beautiful. ||||Be aware of the sargassum (seaweed) that piles up in the summer months. We thought Matachica managed it very well - they notified us that it was an issue and gave us an opportunity to re-schedule before our trip, and they worked daily to manage the impact of the sargassum while we were there. I appreciated that they made us aware of the situation and did everything they could to make our experience great!

My husband & I had a fantastic time at Matachica, with a beautiful beach cabana with a sea view, superbly comfy bed & comfortable accommodations throughout. From the morning coffee/tea service, to our room to the turn down service at night; the delicious food & great cocktails in the restaurants & bars; the offerings of free transfers to neighboring Caye Caulker & Secret Beach; the lovely spa; the hospitality here is unparalleled. Literally everyone who took care of us was top notch, and we were treated like royalty. The only drawback was the sargassum, which is completely beyond the control of any resort at this time, but there was a team out all day every day managing it as best they could, and there were plenty of places to go away from the seaweed so that it really didn't hinder our stay much. We did a package and found it to be of great value. I highly recommend Matachica for a grownups vacation!

This resort is heaven! We stayed 5 nights, there were 4 of us in the luxury villa. Soooo much space. The wind blew constantly which was so nice! Be aware May is apparently seaweed month but it really doesn't matter. They will transport you to an absolutely exquisite beach for a few hours if you want to get in the water. I cannot say enough good things about all of the staff. Food was great as well!

Matachica was stunning and the staff treated us like royalty, from picking us up at the airport, to bringing us coffee every morning. Every excursion was perfectly hosted, and the food and drinks were incredible. We especially enjoyed time with Lance the bartender, Julio (the man), and Heidi at the front desk who took care of everything we needed.

It takes about 25 min to get into town from Matachica. We rented a golf cart during our stay. The beach and resort were both beautiful except for the sargassum. Apparently it's all of the Caribbean. The smell was bad, but the resort did what they could to clear it off of the beach. It's something that they experience in the spring and summer. The service was impeccable. We would definitely go back during a different time of year.

Really delighted to have stayed here at Matachica. This hotel did not come up in our first couple of searches of where to stay near San Pedro but we are so glad to have found it. The staff were excellent and so welcoming and friendly. Big shoutout to Heidi for looking after us and helping pulling out all the stops as we celebrated our anniversary. The food and amenities in the hotel is second to none. Really exceptional. There is a lovely swimming pool to lounge around and/ or comfy sofas that they have placed on the pier in the sea. Both great options Despite this hotel being further from downtown, we did not feel impacted as the hotel provided amazing transfers for us. We also rented a golf buggy which was novel and let us travel to the town as we pleased (~30 min drive)
