Our Readers' Favorite Resorts in Central America of 2025

"Nestled on Ambergris Caye, this resort is a luxe, seaside retreat where guests often spend time relaxing in thatched-roof casitas or villas, lounging in hammocks, and enjoying cocktails with ocean views from a popular tree-top bar. It caters to snorkelers and divers with complimentary snorkel gear and kayaks, a reef just offshore, and the ability to arrange boat excursions to marine sites such as Hol Chan Marine Reserve—home to a rich diversity of fish and coral—making it a favored base for exploring Belize’s barrier reef." - Sarah Bruning Sarah Bruning Sarah Bruning is the special projects and surveys editor at Travel + Leisure, where she has been on staff since 2018. Matachica Resort (Ambergris Caye, Belize) 2 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Sometimes a hotel’s address says a lot. Matachica’s, officially, is “5 Miles North of San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, Belize.” Suffice it to say that they don’t have a problem with traffic noise. Set along a secluded white sand beach and reachable only by motorboat, this is a hotel that’s all about disconnecting from the outside world — its colorful thatch-roofed casitas and cabanas are technology-free (air conditioning aside)." - Tablet Hotels

My husband and I just returned from an amazing trip to Belize! The entirety of our trip was spent at Matachica. This resort is absolutely perfect! The atmosphere is calm and relaxing. Every single staff member was kind, friendly, and accommodating. The food was incredibly delicious! We absolutely fell in love with this place and these people! We will be back!

The property & casitas: |Matachica truly exceeded our expectations. The property is absolutely stunning — beautifully maintained every single day. The staff constantly tend to the grounds, even raking any sargassum to keep the beach pristine and inviting.||Each little casita is immaculately clean — modern, cozy, and full of character, with that perfect “home away from home” feel surrounded by lush greenery and leaning palm trees. You really feel tucked away in your own private jungle, just steps from the beach. The turn down service was my favorite, with incense and cookies. So tranquil and relaxing.||Service: |My boyfriend actually proposed here on the awsome pier 💍, and the staff went above and beyond to help him plan the perfect moment. A HUGE THANK YOU to Heidi and the ladies at the front desk — they were absolutely amazing! Alyx (our waiter) in the Mambo restaurant also. One of our friends got sick on the boat and they brought her chicken soup and Pedialyte. We were so touched by their kindness. ||Pool & restaurant:|We also loved the pool and Tree Bar — their cocktails were not only delicious, but picture-perfect, lol. The pool is quiet, tranquil and super clean. 🍹🌴||We went to town a few times to try some popular restaurant recs. The hotel was my fav food was honestly in the resort restaurant / mambo. Amazing dinner entrees and desserts! ||We honestly couldn’t have imagined a better resort. Matachica will always hold such a special place in our hearts, and we can’t wait to come back!||Only downsides: you have to golf cart to town - which is a small hike and the roads get bumpy in some spots, but Heidi and the ladies can easily get you a cab instead. ||Thanks so much staff of mayachica!!

Great resort. Beautiful well kept grounds. Great cabanas, they seem simple but all the details are right, air tight, quiet, great smelling amenities, wonderful turndown service, etc. etc. The continental breakfast is excellent, homemade pastries, granola, and jams, great coffee. The staff are super attentive and friendly. Everything is just a little better and has an extra touch. ||||Only downside was the amount of sargassum seaweed and the smell it caused. A normal seasonal occurrence and nothing to do with the resort.

Small boutique hotel, very well maintained with exceptional staff! No one passes you by without saying hello. Dining room staff addressed us by name.||Special thank you to Heidi, Andre for an amazing table service for our candlelight dinner and Victor(?), who drove us to the airport and gave us an amazing history of the island.

From the moment we arrived at Matachica, it felt like stepping into a dream. This place is truly paradise perfected—intimate, elegant, and effortlessly relaxing.||||The staff were beyond warm and attentive, always making us feel like honored guests without being intrusive. Every interaction felt genuine, and their attention to detail was unmatched.||||Our casita was beautifully decorated with vibrant, local touches and offered ultimate privacy. Falling asleep to the sound of the waves and waking up to the Caribbean breeze was pure magic.||||The food? Absolutely phenomenal. Every meal was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. The cocktails at the bar were tropical perfection—don’t miss the frozen watermelon mojito!||||Whether we were lounging by the pool, kayaking over crystal-clear water, or just soaking in the peaceful vibe, everything about Matachica was designed for relaxation and joy.||||If you’re looking for a boutique experience with luxury, soul, and natural beauty, Matachica is the place. I didn’t want to leave—and I’m already planning my return.

Hands down the best vacation my husband and I have ever taken together! We took this trip as a babymoon and the resort staff was beyond accommodating. Everything at the resort was perfect: the food was incredible, the pool was so nice to sit around and we never had to fight for a chair, the staff was so kind and equally fun, housekeeping came by 2x a day to fix up our room, and every excursion we did was incredible! I could go on and on about this place. We never return to a resort or location just because there is so much of the world to see, but I absolutely plan on us returning to Matachica in the future!

This resort is heaven! We stayed 5 nights, there were 4 of us in the luxury villa. Soooo much space. The wind blew constantly which was so nice! Be aware May is apparently seaweed month but it really doesn't matter. They will transport you to an absolutely exquisite beach for a few hours if you want to get in the water. I cannot say enough good things about all of the staff. Food was great as well!

It takes about 25 min to get into town from Matachica. We rented a golf cart during our stay. The beach and resort were both beautiful except for the sargassum. Apparently it's all of the Caribbean. The smell was bad, but the resort did what they could to clear it off of the beach. It's something that they experience in the spring and summer. The service was impeccable. We would definitely go back during a different time of year.
