we've been to Fiji three times in the course of our 20 some-odd year marriage and each time i am struck by the sweetness and sincerity of these people; they CARE. as i departed Matamanoa Resort, i felt a distince feeling of sadness, that i was leaving extended family. no kidding.||||so it is with that sentiment that i provide a glimpse of this resort. ||||first, it is small and it is remote and it is the only resort on a small island. it is adults only with a cross section of guests from newly weds to retirees, with a strong presence of Australians, who are only a few hours away by air. there are no kids.||||the facilities are well kept with a range of accommodations including rooms, small and large bures (standalone cabins) with small wading pools. our room was clean according to me; no so according to my wife. i'll leave it at that. the main glitch was the small fridge needed to be defrosted; staff replaced it with a new one.||||meals were somewhat repetitive and generally okay; service was very good.||||now for some caveats: first and foremost, the Matamanoa Island Birds. anyone considering staying here should research these creatures thoroughly. briefly, they visit one of two islands during their lifetimes, Matamanoa during the Oct-Dec timeframe. they inhabit the north section of the island, which is exactly where the "Ocean Bures" are (we stayed here). they are nocturnal and they are LOUD, firing up anytime during the 9pm to 4am timeframe, sounding like small babies crying under the floor or in the closet.||||i would like to call special attention to Patrick, the property manager and Jerry the daytime bartender both of whom were personable, respectful and sincere. they and the rest of the staff did everything they could to make sure we enjoyed our visit.||||in closing, our stay was enjoyable and like other Fijian vacations, memorable for the family-like feeling we experienced.
