The Best Wine Bars in Athens, Greece

"Something cozy: Materia Prima. After a few hours of fighting crowds at the Acropolis, take a 15-minute walk to the neighborhood of Koukaki and Materia Prima wine bar. The comfortable space, with pillows on the purple upholstered banquettes, feels like a well-appointed living room. “Materia Prima,” or, raw material, is the ethos for both wine and food. Natural and low-intervention wines take center stage, such as a chilled and effervescent Xinomavro Piquette from Kamara Estate in Thessaloniki. You can either get half or full-glass pours; do the former and build your own flight of wines. Shareable plates change frequently to reflect what’s in season. The cheery red pop of tomatoes, combined with pickled grapes and almonds, is the perfect antidote to summer’s sweltering heat. Like Oinoscent, Materia Prima has a retail arm to its business and you can buy bottles from their cellar to go."

One of my favorite wine bars in Koukaki. Every time I have been, the menu has been different, and every single dish has been incredible. They have a good wine selection, and best of all the staff know a lot about wine and are extremely good at recommending wines based on your preferences and the food you’re having. Alll in all 10/10

Small minimalistic wine bar. Good variety of wines to choose. Menu is just good, tasty plates in general, but small portions. Polite service but not fast. All plates that we ordered served with significant time delay with each other. Very difficult parking in the nearby area. Overall, it is overpriced for the service, variety of wines, and menu choices.

Wonderful small wine bar. I loved the ambiance of the place. We got there right after 8 on a Fri so it wasn't too busy at all yet. We got our first wine from the menu but after that, we went with the waiters recommendations and they did not disappoint! He brought us wines that weren't even on the menu. Also... The food... AMAZING. I got the toasted ciabatta and it paired perfectly with my wine.

Nestled in the heart of Koukaki, here is where to find a little, cute Temple for wine lovers. Amazing selection of bottles, both from the taste and geographical point of view. You will find excellent Greek wines (of course), but you'll be amazed to find Corsica and South Africa brilliantly represented too. An authentic, sophisticated experience perfectly mastered by Eva - whose passion, knowledge and enthusiasm are so captivating. Five Stars, a huge thumbs up, and looking forward to being back again.

The place was recommended by a resident of Athens, it is not a popular place for tourists, which made the experience more interesting. the food is wonderful, the wine options too! If possible, book a table in advance

Excellent! The young team is more than careful and attentive. Great knowledge of the wine (you don’t get bored with technical explanation) and really good wine selection: most of them byodin from Europe, South Africa and new new world. The food menu has everything one needs to have a nice dinner: easy, without plethoras and very very good “materia prima” ingredients.

Small and efficient. Quite a big variety of wines, some of which is difficult to find elsewhere. The menu is cleverly designed and executed, there is always a dish that can accompany your choice of wine(s). And you always have the cheese choices if you want less elaborated tastes for your wine(s). Pricewise? A pleasant surprise! You'll return soon!

One of the best restaurantes we’ve been in Greece. From the service, the wine list, the meal. Everything was absolutely perfect. It is a must to anyone in Athens. We have been to other Michelin star restaurants in Greece and we can say that Materia Prima is better.
