A 3-Day Road Trip Through Chile's Wine Country

"In the afternoon we drove 30 minutes to reach Matetic, Chile's first biodynamic winery, in the temperate Rosario Valley. The family-owned property has a small-plates restaurant, Equilibrio, where sea bass and reineta, a local white fish, pair beautifully with its standout EQ Granite Pinot Noir."

La Casona at Matetic Vineyards, Rosario Valley, San Antonio Valley, Chile - Explore & Book

"Here is the perfect place to pamper yourself between the swift pace of Santiago and the coastal charms of Valparaíso - a 100-year-old colonial estancia with only 10 rooms, set in beautifully landscaped gardens and surrounded by the rolling hills of the Rosario Valley. This is one of Chile’s best wine regions: neatly ordered emerald vineyards abound, interwoven with astonishingly steep ravines, and the rich red soil is topped by lush grass and thornbush shrubs. Loll in a canopied daybed by the pool, stroll past white geese for a gourmet supper in the nearby octagonal lakeside restaurant, and then sink into a peaceful sleep on unbelievably comfortable pillows. We did, and awoke refreshed enough for a morning walk through the acres of farmland and vineyards owned by the Matetic family, who have been growing world-famous grapes here for decades, unusual because they’re organic. Take a tour of the modern winery and taste how their biodynamic method of harvesting has produced some excellent wines, then wander back to the guesthouse for lunch and a bottle of their signature white, Sauvignon Blanc Coastal. Perfecto. Highs Great food, married with wine from one of Chile's top producers, and included in the room rate The chance to tour the sustainable vineyards, learn about organic and biodynamic wine production from experts, and taste the fruits of their labour The gardens, pool and lakeside restaurant are ideal for a bit of R&R You can also go cycling or hiking if you're feeling energetic Lows It’s a little isolated - there are no shops or other restaurants within walking distance Prices look high - but bear in mind that your stay includes meals, fine wines and a winery tour Expect lots of day trippers in the winery and restaurant" - Glenda Richards

We had a wonderful overall experience at Matetic Vineyards. Our wine tour with María B. was truly outstanding she explained everything clearly, was engaging from start to finish, and made the two hours fly by. The wine tasting that followed was excellent, and her storytelling really came to life through the beautiful aromas. We also enjoyed a very good meal at the restaurant. Unfortunately, our day took a disappointing turn at the gift shop. We went there to purchase the sparkling wine and a few bottles we enjoyed, but the staff member was quite abrupt, and the manager even worse. The restaurant team had told us that all wine purchases were made at the shop, yet the shop staff insisted they don’t sell the sparkling and even asked me to walk back to the restaurant to get the staff member’s name. That felt unprofessional and unnecessary. When I asked to speak with the manager, he simply said they haven’t sold the sparkling for over a year, and he seemed uninterested in resolving the situation. It was a frustrating end to what had otherwise been an amazing visit. Great wine, great tour, great food, but the attitude and misinformation at the gift shop brought the experience down.

Three tastings all three were returned to the glass. I wouldn’t give their wine to an alcoholic in withdrawal. Abomination. Update - I wrote the above hastily and want to be more fair. I tasted the EQ: Chardonnay, Pinot noir and the Syrah. The Chardonnay tasted like butter combined with nail polish remover. The Pinot noir was flat, served too cold, tasted like muddled crayons. The Syrah tasted lost biting into a plum with sugar and vodka added to it. Again, I would be embarrassed serving this to anyone at all. They claim this is their upper end line of wine. Save yourself time. Open bottle, pour directly in toilet.

The vineyard is set a bit of the main road, the restaurant was really good with very good service, nice background music. The food prescription was extremely nice and the taste was full of flavor. Juan Carlos the waiter was friendly extremely knowledgeable about the food and the wine. I would recommend the restaurant in the vineyard.

Really beautiful property and very nice lunch. Upscale feel, we prefer something a bit more family owned/at home feel, so it wasn’t our favorite but I can definitely see how it could be more up someone else’s alley.

Such a nice getaway from the chaotic Santiago to enjoy some wine and dine that's only an hour away. This cozy place looks like a little estancia, a lot of flowers throughout the place and each room is very cozy and large. All rooms have some outdoor space you can sit to just enjoy the garden. You can pick a package to include meal and wine tasting. The wine tour is interesting and it's worthy to pick their best wine option it's not too expensive and you get to refill more. The food are the restaurant is amazing, I did the wine pairing lunch is highly recommended, each dish is carefully created to perfect pair with the wine.

In the serene Casablanca Valley, Matetic Vineyards offers a luxurious and immersive vineyard experience, blending world-class wine with picturesque landscapes. This biodynamic vineyard is known for producing some of Chile’s finest Syrah and Sauvignon Blanc, and I had the privilege of exploring it all during a private tasting session led by a passionate sommelier. Walking through the vineyard’s rolling hills, I learned about Matetic’s commitment to sustainable practices, which made each sip of wine feel even more special. Lunch at Matetic’s Equilibrio restaurant was a highlight. I enjoyed a sumptuous meal that celebrated Chilean flavors—pairing each course with wine crafted from grapes grown just a few steps away. The ambiance was both rustic and refined, with stunning views of the valley. The peace and tranquility of Matetic Vineyards made it a perfect escape from the city’s hustle and bustle, leaving me feeling rejuvenated and deeply connected to Chile’s wine heritage.

Excellent 4 night stay in this beautiful place. Service is highly professional and the staff cannot do enough for you. Beautiful grounds and food and wine is 5 star. A real oasis and very peaceful. One small problem is waiter at dinner "reminding" us to leave a tip which was insulting as we had tipped every night!! Apart from this small issue it is a great experience.

Lovely Vineyard in a beautiful setting. Good wines especially the Syrah. Lunch was a bit of a mixed bag. Beef ribs was way too salty and the cortado coffee was terrible. But the tour around the yard was entertaining and informative! Very lovely setting indeed!
