Let's start with the most positive thing: we had room 36 which was very clean, comfortable and nicely quiet. The personal was very friendly especially the 2 young waiters and cleaning ladies. We booked half board with on our first day a choice between 'schweinsbraten' or spaghetti and the second day a choice between pork cheek and mushroom risotto. Food was tasteful and the first day the portion was more than enough while the second day was a bit on the small side. The breakfast was all right with good coffee and quite some variety. During our last breakfast we made use of the opportunity of a takeaway lunch for 3 Euros per person. Afterwards there was an unpleasant discussion with the owner that we took too much (We filled the little paper bag we received with 3 breads instead of 1). It was solved correctly, the owner changed the information, and the owner did not want us to leave with a bad feeling, but of course that was exactly what happened. We spent almost 400 Euros for 2 nights and then being accused of taking 3 pieces of bread and some cheese instead of the apparently only 1 allowed was a bit disappointing and unnecessarily exaggerated. During check out we were not asked if we had a pleasant stay nor wished a good journey home, which came across somewhat unfriendly. After a few positive experiences with the Matreier Tauernhaus, it's a pity that this overall pleasant stay ended in a bit of an anti climax. Everyone can have a bad day, especially after a long season but it was a pity to be on the receiving side of that.

We loved our stay at Matreier Tauernhaus. The location is perfection. We loved the quiet, calm, and beauty of this space set in Hohe Tauern National Park. Enjoying a cold beer or spritz on the beautiful patio after a long hike was a highlight! The breakfast buffet was extensive and delicious, and we enjoyed the classic Tyrolean dishes at dinner. Highly recommend!

This is an old, authentic Austrian guest house. We reserved one of the renovated rooms with a balcony and it was private, quiet and very comfortable. Our reservation included breakfast as well as dinner. Dinners were typically Austrian fare, but choices were available. The guest house is at the end of the road toward the glacier and extremely quiet after the day visitors leave. It is as lovely and quiet as the pictures indicate.||||There are not many visitors in this area of Austria from the US but the staff speaks sufficient English that anyone will be comfortable. Most of the other guests were hikers or bikers. Everyone arrives at breakfast early in order to begin the day's activity.||||From the hotel, you can take a taxi for a nominal fee toward the glacier, or choose to walk along the river and its beautiful sights. There are numerous spectacular hikes in the area. If you are a fit hiker, don't miss the Glacierweg!. ||||We were completely satisfied with our accommodations and the price. Definitely plan to return.

Visited in August with my 14 year old granddaughter. We met up with friends from Germany. I was worried that my granddaughter would be bored but nothing of the sort. We both enjoyed it so much that she wants to go back next year! It is ideal for discovering all the beautiful, breathtaking surroundings. It is peaceful and cosy. The food was outstanding. A continental breakfast to die for and a four course evening meal that was always top class and a different menu every night. |I would highly recommend.

We enjoyed the food, hiking and hospitality so much the first visit that we returned with our son and his wife. There are several spectacular hikes to take directly from the hotel, including the Glacier Way. A family-run place steeped in history. Another gem that few Americans find!

This hotel is in the middle of a nature park in Tirol. We used it as a base to go ski touring for a week. It was crowded in the weekend and quiet during the weekdays. Hotel has been re-done a couple of years ago so all the rooms look nice and are clean.||Food is good too, we had half board andalways had the choice between 2 meals. Since we had some vegetarians inour group they alson adjusted those meals so everyone had a good meal. All dinners were 4 course meals and so in the end it was a great deal. Even drinks and bites throughout the day that were put on the bill were low in price too.||About 15 minutes driving is Matrei and there is a ski resort there. There is a free bus shuttle service to bring people from the hotel to the ski resort (and back). This is the regular ski bus. All in all, great place to spent a while. Thinking about going back there in the summer one time.||There is a wood burning sauna, infrared sauna and a jacuzzi outside.

We've had a lot of contact with the owners before arrival because of the arrangements for our toddler and our dog. Always friendly and quick to answer. A travel bed with extra mattress and very good bedlinen was prepared for her. Unfortunately the room we got was just above the kitchen so a bit loud and in the corridor sometimes smelly. Other than that the place is nice; owners, staff and guests are friendly. There was always a small special gesture for our daughter: a toy on her menu, her napkins folded as a crown/boat, or a napkin with drawings for her only. |The location is great for going on walks in the nature or the icepark at just 2km away. The first skistation is at about 14km, easily reachable by car depending on the weather. |

Start and end point for the shuttle towards the glacier. Ate late lunch after a hike. Attentive service, great food, and nice seating area with view of mountains. Try the Zirbenschnaps!
