Nice experience in this gracious backpackers hostel located in a excellent position near to the station. The room and other common area are clean. You must pay by cash at your arrival. Very good comparation quality-price. Staff very kindly

Had a great stay here, the staff were so welcoming and helpful. It felt more like a share house with some nice people than a hostel, but japanese style with sleeping on futons. Also really close to everything, in a great location :)

Good place to stay if in Matsumoto! My boyfriend and I stayed in a shared room. The host Brian was very kind, chatty, and helpful. Beds were comfortable with nice warm blankets. Location was less than a 10 minute walk to the train station, and only about 30 minute walk to the castle and museum. Overall I would certainly recommend staying here if in Matsumoto!

It is located just north of Matsumoto Station West Exit Square, along the train tracks, across the bridge over the river. At first glance, it looks like a Japanese house, but in Japan, houses often become vacant or abandoned when their elderly owners pass away. In Japan, vacant houses are often renovated and used for other purposes, and this building is one example of this. You can feel a little bit of the good old Japanese atmosphere. This guesthouse, which was renovated from a Japanese house, is popular with guests from all over the world. However, it is designed for the height of Japanese people, so it may feel cramped for larger people. Convenience stores such as 7-Eleven and Family Mart are also nearby. Matsumoto City Museum and Matsumoto Castle are also within walking distance. Behind the building is a pachinko parlor, one of Japan's proud landmarks. Pachinko is gambling, so play in moderation!

Comfy and cozy guesthouse. The host Brian is very friendly and will provide tips for your visit to Matsumoto. The private futon room was very comfortable - very nice to be provided a hot water bottle (in January). Great to see an Irish owned guesthouse here in Japan!

The host was very hospitable and accommodating to get us settled with a place to stay during a very busy season. We had a private room, which was spacious and comfortable, with shared access to bath and kitchen. The room did not lock, but we felt very safe leaving our belongings. Brian provided great tips on sites and events to visit in the local area.

Yelp
Matsumoto Backpackers was a very nice guesthouse experience for me. The hosts, Shuko and Brian, were very kind and welcomed me into their guesthouse, and taking the time to chat with me about Matsumoto and being an Assistant Language Teacher (in English). Matsumoto Backpackers is a pretty new place, only opened a year ago, but it is conveniently located 5 mins walk from Matsumoto Station, and 10-15 mins walk from Matsumoto Castle. The downtown and more popular area is also about 7-10 mins away. Unlike typical hostels where you are assigned a bunkbed, here they have tatami mat rooms and futons - maybe you will have to sleep in the same room as another traveler, but I was lucky and had the room to myself. At ¥3100/night for a futon, it is a decent price considering the nice facilities and home-y like feel to the place. There are two bathrooms, two showers, and three sinks (incl. the kitchen). Aside from wanting to stay in Matsumoto a bit longer, the only thing that wasn't ideal was the placement of the Guesthouse. It is sort of in the parking lot of a pachinko parlor, there is no spaces for parking for the guesthouse (though that didn't apply to me), and I was awoken by some construction at around 6am, which wasn't too pleasant. Overall, Brian and Shuko will do a great job taking care of you and making you feel at home. It's a comfortable guesthouse that I recommend to the casual traveler looking to stay in Matsumoto.
