Matsuya Ryokan

Absolutely the best ryokan food I have ever had in the whole Japan. The food was so good, I actually miss it already. I wish I could eat it again :) Absolute amazing location to visit shrines. Thank you for taking care of my laundry :) The bathroom / Onsen was closed already at 10pm, which is too early. The room was a little bit small. Exceptional food and location, but the onsen closing at 10pm is far too early.

Humble ryokan right near Zenkoji, the people are wonderful and the stay comfortable. Loved their kaiseki dinner (add on) and small but cozy bath. The breakfast was nice too! We only stayed one night but that seems sufficient for the area.

Very nice traditional japanese inn run by a local family. Location is really nice (directly at Zenko-ji Temple, but also not to far from nagano station). Rooms were as expected (no shoes, traditional furniture, futon, ...). You should be able to sit and sleep on the ground if you book the traditional room style. Best things were the traditional meals and the sento bath. They were even able to povide a gluten free meal alternative for me.

We stayed here, unfortunately, only for one night. We arrived on a rainy day, and their team received us in an incredibly kind fashion and made us feel welcome and at home from the first second. Another regret: we didn’t make a prior booking for either dinner or breakfast. Don’t make the same mistake! — it definitely seemed like another worthy, unique experience. The location can’t get any better: you just walk a couple of minutes to the left and reach the temple — you actually feel as if you were sleeping inside the precinct — and we were able to attend both the night and morning ceremonies. We had arrived from Tokyo. Afterwards, we continued to Takayama, Kyoto, Osaka, Himeji, Kurashiki… It still remains one of the main highlights of this journey. If I could choose now, I’d stay for at least another day and night. Thank you fondly — for everything.

Cute place with a quick access to the temple. Futons were comfy, breakfast was good. I enjoyed the bath as well as wearing yukata around the ryokan. We didn’t manage to have dinner there because I guess it has to be reserved in advance?

It can get quite cold in the room as the heater is only the air condition. There's an elderly couple (presumably the owner) that lives on prem and they are very nice. Food is alright but there's not much to do in the evening

Cannot go wrong! Wonderful little rooms with tea and treats when you arrive. The breakfast was a highlight of our entire trip, wear your robe down to breakfast and embrace the vibes! If we ever go back to Nagano area we are staying here 100%

Fantastic location close to the famous shinjo temple. Traditional guest house with tatami mats. Lovely atmosphere, great little onsen and amazing breakfast. We happened to be there for the light festival which was great timing.
