Cannot go wrong! Wonderful little rooms with tea and treats when you arrive. The breakfast was a highlight of our entire trip, wear your robe down to breakfast and embrace the vibes! If we ever go back to Nagano area we are staying here 100%

If you want a traditional Japanese experience, don't visit this area without staying here. Respecting and learning Japanese culture was part of the experience. Staff are absolutely wonderful, kind, and considerate and will respectfully guide you. You must experience the breakfast too. 6 stars!

Wow what a location! Right on the main drag up to the temple, and in fact the hotel is on the original site of the temple! Stepping out and being in the middle of the shopping throng was fun. The service was friendly and helpful and rooms were clean. Information about the temple services is provided and I enjoyed reading the book on Buddhism that was provided. (I'm not religious but always like learning new things.) Note for light sleepers that the door to our room at least was quite thin so we could hear a lot of hallway noise.

Stayed 3 nights at this lovely ryokan.||It is the first ryokan that I have ever stayed in. Great atmosphere, family-owned and run. Staff were warm and helpful. ||Our room was cosy and whenever we were due back in the evenings , the aircon was set to 26 Celsius, which seems very common in Japan, but too warm for me. Easily fixed, because each room has its own aircon.||We enjoyed breakfast and one dinner. So elaborate, fresh and tasty. ||My friend and I are now in a western-style hotel in Sapporo and miss our little Nagano home!

Matsuya Ryokan was a wonderful first experience with both a ryokan and an onsen. My husband and I booked the private room with a private bathroom. The rooms are made up of futons on top of tatami mats in each room, which are taken down by the ryokan staff each morning and set up again each night. I had some trepidation about sleeping on the futon but it was very comfortable! We both slept great. The onsen is a shared bath with the other guests of the same gender. It’s available for a couple of hours each morning and a few hours each night. The ryokan provides yukatas (robes) for each guest which were lovely to wear. Everything felt very clean. The location of this spot is also wonderful! It’s very close to the Zenkoji temple and on a historic block with beautiful storefronts. The staff is so kind and helpful to English speakers. We would absolutely stay here again and recommend it to others!

Fantastic location close to the famous shinjo temple. Traditional guest house with tatami mats. Lovely atmosphere, great little onsen and amazing breakfast. We happened to be there for the light festival which was great timing.

Staying here was a wonderful experience. Very clean, staff were very nice , and Japanese breakfast was very authentic. The indoor onsen was fantastic! Very good location – – just down the street from the Zen Koji temple, and just about a 10 minute walk from downtown/train-bus station. We were able to message with the staff/family to let them know we would be several hours late due to our flight delay, and they responded with reassurance that they would be ready for us. we never stayed in for dinner, but we heard it was really good. our room was pretty tight with three people, but that is understandable based on the typical size of rooms. Need to be able bodied – – lots of stairs/steps. Pretty limited English from staff. Would recommend going to the 7 AM meditation service to get a blessing at the temple.

Basic but wonderful Ryokan! The best part was the food! Definitely have dinner at least once if you're staying. Opulent, super tasty and stunningly beautiful. Service was great both with the rooms and food. We brought our 1-year-old, she loved it too!
