Basic but wonderful Ryokan! The best part was the food! Definitely have dinner at least once if you're staying. Opulent, super tasty and stunningly beautiful. Service was great both with the rooms and food. We brought our 1-year-old, she loved it too!

Great location for the temple and surrounding grounds. Rooms small for us tall folk and that’s quite the norm. Booked dinner for one of our nights and the food was amazing. Be very sure to be seated for dinner before your booking time. Restaurant service has fairly traditional expectations; punctuality is one. Warm reception service.

We had an amazing ryokan experience at Matsuya. We stayed in a traditional japanese room and couldn't have asked for anything more right from the minute we stepped into the ryokan.||After being greeted warmly we were taken for a tour of the ryokan, which was definitely necessary as there are quite a few stairs and halls and our room was at the back of the ryokan. We had booked a traditional japanese room and it was wonderful. Windows all around the room overlooking beautiful trees in neighbouring yards. We also had a functional, small bathroom a tv and wifi. There was hot tea waiting for us upon arrival and when we got back from dinner our room had been rearranged into it's sleeping formation with sleeping pads and blankets on the tatami mats. ||The food at the ryokan was extremely comprehensive for both dinner and breakfast (both very traditional japanese menus). Plus they had an onsen that we enjoyed (separate for males and females).||Definitely recommend staying here and enjoying the full package by getting your meals included. I booked through japanican website.

This place was perfect. The owners super kind. One of the staff can speak English and was really helpful. I had a friend come to Japan and this was the perfect place to show them a traditional area. Plus the temple and the area are not over crowded. It’s a great area to walk around

Very hospitable host/staff, sizeable traditional room with big modern bathroom. Impeccable location basically located along the Nakamise street at Zenkoji area. Very walkable to many shops, restaurants and the temple, quaint and serene. Enjoyed the simple traditional breakfast too.

Absolutely fell in love after the first night. It was the best start to our travels in Japan. Highly recommend!

This wonderful place has been in the family for 103 years! The owners are gracious and so welcoming. Traditional rooms are lovely but some rooms would not be suitable for those with mobility challenges. Do have the breakfast - it was well worth the extra cost! All is clean and wonderful. It is a 25 minute walk to the train station, but there is a bus if you wish. Traditional rooms are lovely but some rooms would not be suitable for those with mobility challenges. We easily made day trips to the Snow Monkeys and Matsumoto from here. We were so happy to have found this warm ryokan and meet these kind people!
