Matsuzakaya Honten (Hakonemachi, Ashigarashimo-gun, Kanagawa Prefecture) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Set in a 17th-century building on the verdant slopes of Hakone, Japan, Matsuzakaya Honten is the absolute gold standard for onsen hospitality. The timeless luxury of their private hot springs hardly needs introduction and is available in both communal and private settings. Meiji period details abound in public spaces, including a lounge, bar, and unique sunken hearth area. Rooms overlook enchanting, mossy gardens and feature mountain views, cozy tatami, and gorgeous natural wood." - Tablet Hotels

Just left after one fantastic night with our family of four. A highlight of our trip and a truly special experience. The staff was excellent and pleasant, the hot spring baths are amazing. I particularly enjoyed the "public" bath which was wide open, had great amenities to get the true hot bath experience and just a short walk from our room. The traditional Japanese meals were awesome and I tasted more unique dishes that I had in the first week of our visit to Japan. Rooms are spacious and super cool. I can't wait to come back here (and probably leave our teenage kids behind next time😁).

We absolutely loved our stay here. The staff were all excellent. They anticipated our needs making us feel very pampered. The meals were unique and delicious.||The spacious rooms are a great balance of authentic traditional living with modern conveniences. The rice paper walls allowed a connection to nature while the heaters kept the space cozy. The beds and linens were so comfortable!||We made full use of our in-room outdoor onsen, taking multiple dips a day. There are also five outdoor onsens available for reservation, giving an even deeper connection to nature. After our two-night stay, everything in this 50-year-old creaky body felt better for weeks. It was a great way to refresh our bodies to prep for the second part of our trip. I wish I could somehow give 10 stars and cannot wait to visit again.

We had the most amazing time at this incredible onsen during our trip to Japan last May! The setting was absolutely breathtaking — surrounded by nature, with peaceful hot springs that made us feel completely relaxed and rejuvenated. The staff were warm and welcoming, and everything was impeccably clean and beautifully maintained.||It was truly one of the highlights of our trip. We loved every moment of the experience — from soaking in the mineral-rich waters to enjoying the traditional Japanese atmosphere. We can't wait to come back again someday!||Highly recommended to anyone visiting Japan — a must-try experience!

Matsuzakaya Honten was fantastic. I am not sure what our expectations were but the hotel exceeded them. The service was excellent. The room was spacious, comfortable and well appointed with a wonderful, private outdoor onsen. We also had a reserved private hour at one of the public onsens. The atmosphere was authentic, the experience very relaxing and we got the best taste of traditional Japan. We also had fairly complicated dietary requirements which the hotel met carefully and precisely and with considerable forethought - private dining room, beautiful presentation. The Ryokan/Hotel isn't cheap but it is good value for money and I would go back in a heartbeat.

We found this place through google reviews and did not know what to expect but it was amazing. The rooms are spacious and comfortable and gave off warm vibes and spa feeling. Service was top tier. We were a group of 6 adults plus one toddler and they were very accommodating. We got a big room for 4 and a small room for 2. The food was great as well. We stayed for one night only but we will definitely return for a longer stay so that we can enjoy the facility better.

My mom and I had the dreamiest stay here. I’m already sad to have left and hope to return to this ryokan one day! It’s definitely in my top 3 hotel stays of all time. The staff are so welcoming and truly go above and beyond. We arrived in the rain and a staff member came running out to bring us umbrellas. We splurged on a room with its own Onsen and it was so worth it! Staff give you traditional Japanese sandals, kimonos, pajamas, and jackets to wear during your stay. The food was incredible and they were able to accommodate us by making fully vegetarian meals (we requested this a couple months in advance). You can enjoy all you can drink beverages including beer on tap, wine, lemon sours, and more. It wasn’t too bad getting there via public transit. The bus from Hakone station and to Odawara was easy enough. Best to not bring luggage on it though.

this was a unique Japanese experience in between our trips from Kyoto to Tokyo. Relaxing, enjoyable, and the staff did everything to help you immerse yourself in Japanese culture. From wearing our kimonos to dinner in our Japanese pajamas for breakfast, the staff did everything to make. You feel welcome and part of their culture. The price was high, but completely worth it as you had an experience of going into genuine onsen culture. The dinners were exquisite and worthy of some of the best food I've ever had. The waiters explained everything and made you feel comfortable and we're happy that you were there. Can't recommend high enough.

This was one of the most picturesque and unique hotel experiences a person could have throughout their travels. The staff is amazing and they go above and beyond to make guests feel comfortable, the food is amazing, and the whole place is very clean. We want to thank Sato for providing an amazing dinner service over two nights and for being a great host. The resort’s onsen are fabulous and feel very refreshing, and the location is one of a kind. Truly a once in a lifetime experience, totally worth it. Thank you!

Yelp
Nice hotel and ryokan. Dinner was very good and breakfast was amazing! Private onsen rooms are fantastic! But it's a bit shabby for the price (you'll see wall paper peeling and only towels in one of the two bathrooms) and it seems some of the nice looking public lounge areas are under construction or closed. But hey, if you're here for the hot springs it's quite nice. We had a private one so I can't attest to the gender segregated public baths. Seems to be a lesser known and perhaps lesser quality ryokan and onsen but for a Alastair minute booking not bad! Get the bus tourist pass and you'll get access to all the transit (train, cable car, etc) too. Worth it if your here for more than a day.
