Google
We had the best time in the beginners Catch & Cast lesson with Matt. Would absolutely recommend to anyone. Matt is super knowledgeable and a great instructor who has lots of respect for the sport and for the fish themselves. The first half of the lesson was spent learning to cast and the second half we were fishing in the pond. And we caught a few fish!!!! Next time we are back in Truckee we will definitely get back out on the water with Matt. River is up next for us. One of our trip highlights - must book!!!

I participated in a river fly fishing trip through Big Brother Big Sisters, and my little and I had a fantastic time! We had Adam E as our guide and he was great, he was very patient with my little and I as we were both totally new to fishing. We both caught a fish and Adam showed us how to reel it in and was generally very knowledgeable about fishing and nature. Adam was great and we had a great experience overall.

Google
Extremely satisfied with my guide and trip with Matt Heron Fly Fishing. Great technical advice from Mike (practically swam with a mask a snorkle and placed the fish on my hook LOL!) and knowledge of the Truckee River!

William W.

Google
We had a wonderful time. Our guide was Finn and he was patient, had a sense of humor, knew the history of the Truckee area and in discussions, was wise beyond his years. And we caught several fish!

John H.

Google
Fantastic experience overall! The communication in the days leading up to the trip was great. Expectations and instructions were clear. Mostly though I can’t say enough good things about our guide Morgan. He taught me a lot and went way out of his way to get my 8 year old son stoked on fly fishing. My expectations were high and they were met!

Google
Another great day fishing with Matt’s team - this time with Austin. Lulana is so attentive and will get you set up - you will have fun, you will catch fish and you will learn something in a beautiful setting from highly experienced guides… what’s not to like.

Google
Hands down the best fly fishing guide I have ever hired or worked with. Matt is superbly skilled, incredibly well-informed, endlessly enthusiastic, and can meet any guest at the skill level they're at. Plus he has the eyes of a hawk, and can spot fish at an inhuman level. If you're in the Truckee region, use this guy and his team.

Fred C.

Google
Had a BLAST with Matt on the Truckee! He put me into a lot of fish and even taught me new ways to fish for them. His stoke for fishing made for an incredible day on the river. Can't wait for the next time. Thanks Matt!!!

Yelp
This was highly recommended on Yelp and another site. However I went on two trips and both disappointed. I spent approximately 1600$+ on both trips for my family not including tips. I did the cast and catch for 5 people. I found it overpriced. The guide left for 30 minutes and just let us practice on the golf course without any instruction. The golf course was in play as well which was a little odd. The pond was full of weeds and while we did have the experience, I was not worth 200$ plus per person. I asked for a discount because I was a large group. They did not agree. The second trip was far worse, we went to a location that was nice. I went with my two kids aged 12 and 13. I found the guide to be aggressive and somewhat unpleasant. It was uncomfortable to me and something I'm not used to. But I wanted my kids to have a good time as it was their first time. The payment arrangement was not clear as well. I didn't want to make a big deal out of it, I also tipped the guide just out of habit. I gave more than 15%. But in the end I was left with a sour taste in my mouth and regretted using this outfitter. I contacted Matt and let him know. No action was taken, Disappointed and I will not use this guide service next time I'm back in Tahoe.

Yelp
What a great outfit. We had very little fly fishing experience but Matt was terrific with the lessons..lots of patience, easy instructions and just overall a great experience. Highly recommend.

JD S.

Yelp
Have had the opportunity to fish with Matt, and team, many times over many years. Each time bringing friends, colleagues, or family. All learning a ton (regardless of prior experience) and all have a great time. What a great team.

Yelp
Matt is so great! I can see why the resort at squaw creek exclusively works with him. Everything from booking to day of communication was excellent. Matt is a great and nice guy, and you can tell he really wants you to have a great time and hopefully catch something! The day starts with a lesson that was clear and easy to understand, and even though due to the nice weather/bad skill on our part we didn't snag a fish early on, I still found it insanely relaxing and therapeutic. Since you're so focused on the bobber and paying attention to the water and stream, there's not a lot of attention for much else. Even if I hadn't of caught anything I would of enjoyed myself, but catching one at the end made my day! I would definitely recommend for fly fishing in Tahoe/ Squaw Creek area. He's a really a patient and kind teacher and runs an A+ program. I'm hoping we can meet again, soon!

Yelp
My friend and I were on a hiking trip in South Lake Tahoe. Fishing came up as a last minute great idea. I emailed the business to inquire if dogs were allowed to tag along. Lulana reached out on a Saturday morning, which I'm assuming was a day off, after just one hour of having sent the email. Amazing! She was very informative, and was able to make accommodations for the two of us. Last minute. In the off season. Away from the office. As if this set up couldn't be better. Our guide deserves his own paragraph. Brian was the best possible person to be our guide. First off, he was super friendly and personable just over the phone. My friend and I can be a handful to say the least, so tolerant is definitely a quality that this man has. And remember earlier, I mentioned that we inquired if dogs could come. Brian was very welcoming of the TWO dogs, despite them needing to learn to keep out of the water entirely a few times. The dogs actually ended up following him more than us by the end of the trip. Last but not the least, Brian's patience and clarity in giving instruction landed us a fish each. Two beginner fly fishers, one of which has never even successfully fished in the past, caught fish in cold waters! Thank you, Brian, for such a memorable experience. We are already planning our next trip!

Yelp
If I could post 10 stars I would for sure. Matt and his crew were waiting for us on time and ready to teach a bunch of city slickers how to fly-fish. Matt and his team were very hands-on and taught us the basics. We all (7 of us) caught fish and learned to cast like pros! Matt has been around for several years and treats his customers with 1:1 hand-holding (for those that needed it) and never made you feel like a rookie. Matt brought two great guys to help. One of them was a great young man named Nico. Nico was a very polished 14 year old with vast knowledge of fly-fishing and life in general. The best money spent on our Team Bonding event in Tahoe. Thanks again Matt.

Yelp
Did a 4 hour fly fishing introduction at the Truckee River with Matt and Trent. Very good experience as both Matt and Trent were patient and knowledgeable. I only wish I lived closer to take his actual class, because I really found fly fishing quite relaxing and enjoyable and am eager to make it a permanent hobby.

Yelp
I am a family adventure documentary photographer and I worked with Matt Heron a few weeks ago. I have a background in outdoor guiding as well as fly fishing. Matt is the real deal. Yes, he's a great fisherman. But more importantly he provides an incredible experience from start to finish. He and Chris (the other guide with us) showed a professionalism and kindness towards the customer that is rare. I would choose Matt Heron Fly Fishing every day of the week.

Yelp
Today I fly fished for the first time in my life and can honestly say I learned more than a ton. Trent Kirschner was my guide and he was very knowledgeable. He started me with the basics of dry casting and worked with me to learn the technique and gave me tips and tricks for different fishing scenarios. He was very kind, down to earth and was as excited as I was when I pulled in my first (smaller catch); as I was when I pulled in the monster. Fishing at Squaw was beautiful, the facilities were well kept and we had an opportunity to fish a couple of places on the property. Not having to have a fishing license is a great advantage for travelers or those not sure if this sport is right for them. I will without a doubt now become a fly wisherwoman. My next guided trip will be with the same company. I am beyond impressed. Thank you a MILLION Trent; you have made my summer.

Yelp
My son and I went fly fishing at the private, stocked pond at Squaw Creek with one of Matt's guide, Dave, was fantastic. We were with another father-son group, so we had a nice, small group for the 1 hour lesson and 2 hour fishing at the pond. Booking was easy with super friendly service with Lulana. We had a blast learning the basics of fly fishing, practicing our cast, and fishing in the pond. Dave was great with the boys and helped them catch and release a few large trouts. We will definitely go again, and highly recommend it for anyone who's interested in fly fishing in beautiful scenery!

Karsten M.

Yelp
Matt is the best guide ever. We went fishing today and caught a few big trout and a whitefish. He got me on my first trout. Pleeeeeeeeeeease choose Matt Heron.

Yelp
On August 8th, I attended Matt Heron Fly Fishing Cast & Catch class. I had a great Instructor (Trent K) who was vary patient and had a good eye for the small details. He was great at explaining the basics and giving personalized tips. When we moved from the dry casting to the water, he had us on fish right away. Although I missed the first few, I did land 2 Rainbows. I would definitely recommend this experience to anyone of any skill level. I will be visiting again on my next trip to the area.

Yelp
I got the pleasure of fishing with Brian Purdy for a day on the Truckee and can't recommend him enough. Brian is an awesome angler and teacher. We connected with some great fish and I learned a ton from him. He is extremely knowledgeable when it comes to the river and also technique. Although I've been fishing for a long time, I came away with a lot of great tips for getting the perfect drift and he also taught me a lot about tight line nymphing. On top of all of this is he super personable and a fun guy to hang out with. I can't recommend him enough. If you are going to call to fish with a guide through Matt Heron, you should request to go out with Brian.

Yelp
Being my 1st time on the Little Truckee River, my guide (Jordan Romney) provided me all the excellent instruction to put me onto the most-selective residents of the Little Truckee River. Jordan is a most patient teacher as my casting technique leaves a lot to be desired and my hooksets need a lot of work as well. I had my share of grabs as well as number of hookups (and - ahem - a few "conservation releases"). I highly recommend Jordan and Matt Heron Fly Fishing services, so much so I'll reach out again to MHFF for my next guided trips to other western and eastern Sierra waters.

Natalie P.

Yelp
Awesome experience for me and my sister! Matt is fantastic with beginner levels- super patient and friendly. We had a great time and learned a ton.

Yelp
If you are looking for the best guide service in Tahoe than Matt Heron is the company to use. Great on the water lessons and landing fish made a great day. Worth every penny.

Yelp
We joined instructor Stephen at the Resort at Squaw Creek for a 3 hour fly fishing class & it was such a pleasant way to spend a clear July day when visiting Lake Tahoe. My fiancee and I were the only students in the class so we received excellent one on one attention and Stephen was very receptive to our fly fishing beginner status. We hooked some nice rainbow trout and tried many different locations at the lake at Squaw Creek. Matt was extremely flexible with our unexpected schedule because there was a major accident on the highway going to Tahoe from the Bay Area which initially caused us to miss our scheduled class but he was very understanding and fit us at an available time slot during the weekend.

Yelp
Awesome experience for my 3 boys and me learning how to fly fish. Matt and his colleague spent 3 hours with us and the young boys had a lot of fun and we learned a lot about fly fishing. Matt was knowledgeable, very customer service oriented and passionate about fishing and the local environment. I would do this again with Matt - he made fishing exciting!

Yelp
My EO group took Matt Heron's fly fishing course while on our annual business retreat. He and his assistant Dave were very informative, helpful and tuned into our session. They gave clear instructions and made the learning experience fun. Thank you Matt and Dave. I highly recommend checking out this fly fishing course if you are up visiting in Lake Tahoe or Squaw.

Yelp
Wanted to give 10 stars but couldn't. My son and I went for a full day on the Truckee with Matt and had a fantastic day. While we did not catch a lot of fish (5), what we learned from Matt was incredibly valuable. We came in wanting to learn the Truckee, fishing techniques, and strategies. He over delivered on all. Matt was extremely personable, approachable and developed a great report with us immediately. We spent the first 45 minutes on techniques and he continued to coach us all day long in an extremely positive manner. We have experiences with guides in other parts of the country who just tell you where to cast your fly, don't tell you why, and wait for you to hook up. Matt was constantly educating us on where the fish should be, river structure, how to deliver the fly and let it drift for best results, areas to fish on the river, access locations, and how the seasons impact the river. By the end of the day, our technique had improved dramatically, especially my son's dry fly technique. Whether you are a novice or accomplished, Matt is going to deliver a great experience on a very challenging river. This was the most fun 5 fish we have ever caught, and we look forward to "hooking up" with him again next year!

Yelp
First called Matt 3 years ago as I was interested in fly fishing. Took the cast and catch out at squaw resort, great casting advice and the catching a fish in the stocked pond was invaluable. Called him for a guided trip last year, and caught 4 nice rainbows on the little truckee! Awesome. This year I came back, 5 to the net and lost too many to discuss. Matt is experienced and friendly, with an eagle eye for those holding trout. We literally walked up, dropped a fly and bang, fish on! The passion, and knowledge is top notch. Anyone interested in fly fishing should give give Matt a call.
