"The Bailey House Museum, a small lava rock and Koa wood home, has seen many lives. Built in 1833 as a mission, it served as a female seminary, then a private home, and then a base during World War II. Today, the museum houses Maui's largest collection of Hawaiian artifacts. There's history throughout every inch, from the well-worn doorways to the creaky floors, all of which recall a time before Maui became known as a tony resort town." - Todd Plummer

"Zoom out. What’s this place all about? The Bailey House Museum, a small lava rock and Koa wood home, has had many lives. Built in 1833 as a mission, it then served as a female seminary, a private home, and a base during World War II. Today, the museum houses Maui's largest collection of Hawaiian artifacts. There's history on every inch, from the well-worn doorways to the creaky floors, all of which recall a time before Maui became known as a tony resort island. Can you tell us a bit more about what's inside? It will only take about an hour to get through this tiny museum, making it an educational pit-stop as you make your way around Maui. The collection of pre-European artifacts is particularly interesting, as are the gorgeous landscape oil paintings by Edward Bailey, after whom the house is named. Are there any temporary exhibits we can see? It's all one big permanent collection, but don't miss the second floor, which has been set up to look and feel like a 19th-century upcountry Maui home. If you're a real history buff, you can also ask for special access to the museum's robust collection of preserved letters and photographs. Who else is here scoping out the art? Because this museum is on the smaller side, most people are drive-bys looking to fill time on a rainy day or kill an hour before another activity. But that doesn't mean Bailey House isn't worth seeing; on the contrary, it will enrich anyone's trip. Anything to worry about as far as the facilities? This is an old house and the best parts are on the second floor, so it might not be suitable for visitors who can't handle stairs. Any guided tours worth trying? Although there are no guided tours, the volunteers are deeply passionate about the island's history. If you're curious about something, just ask. Gift shop: What will we find? An adorable gift shop sells charming handmade trinkets, soaps, coffees, and postcards. Any advice for the time- or attention-challenged? Make sure to walk through the gardens, home to a variety of local plants (some endangered) as well as the original 1919 redwood surfboard that belonged to Duke Kahanamoku, an Olympic medal-winning swimmer credited with popularizing the sport of surfing." - Todd Plummer

When we got there it turns out they were cleaning up from a break in which sucks. It sucks that anyone would break into a place trying to show the history of Maui. The tour was good and informative about the history of Maui. We spent about an hour there.

Small house that serves as a museum for the Maui Historical Society. A lot of early island artifacts. They have one of Duke Paoa Kahanamoku early surfboard on the property. Nice gardens around the museum.

Wonderful hidden treasure in Wailuku. Lovely staff, though one of the docents was there and not in evidence. The senior docent and gift shop attendant were very attentive. The selections for gifting were beautiful. The displays were well curated.

We had an interesting guided tour of the building (in which the historical society resides), some history of Maui, along with some very interesting artifacts.

A wonderful piece of hidden history. I recommend exploring the entire site. As the buildings are very old, there are some parts that would not be easily accessible via chair. The staff and docents are very knowledgeable and incredibly friendly people.

Take the tour, it was the most informative. The tour guide was good but seems to have a lil bias towards some Christian themes and some non-pc language. I think the volunteers must be members of the church across the street. Some things discussed I think were his opinion and not factually based. The items and pictures were very interesting and I was happy to learn about mauis history. It was hard to find many museums talking about maui, online was the most helpful, but having something tangible and talking so some people who have loved there most of their loves was helpful and informative. Worth the money. Restrooms are on the property.

Yelp
Our visit was on Friday, May 5, 2023. The info online and on the brochure available at the museum were outdated, such as ticket pricing and info about the museum hours being affected by covid. The location is small, and after looking around the front building, we walked into a group preparing the place for a wedding. A person doing another person's hair (perhaps for a wedding) blocked us from entering the back building. The hair dresser said the museum was closed, even though we had paid and the ticket seller told us that the inside and outside areas were open to us. There was some tension. I can see the hair dresser's point. That person thought the museum was closed and wasn't expecting guests to be walking around. We left after less than 10 minutes. The front building was not bad. It was $10 each. That's not a lot of money, so that's OK. It just felt uncomfortable and it felt like a miscommunication.
