What a great time our group had learning to surf with Kyle and his team! Their patience with our large group is to be commended. It's not easy teaching a group ranging in age from 16-57 to learn to pop up on a surf board! A great time was had by all! Mahalo!

My husband and I took beginner surf lesson with Kahala(forgive me if I got that wrong). Awesome instructor! My husband initially did not want to do the lesson but he ended up having a great time, and I’m sure it built his confidence. She had us both up surfing in no time. My husband had a tougher time getting it but she was patient and took time to make sure he had a good experience. We also got some awesome professional photos of us surfing (60 dollars extra, which you can choose to do when you arrive). Long sleeve rash guards and reef shoes are provided. Highly recommend!

10/10 recommend Maui Wave Riders. We booked a family lesson at the beginning of our trip and my kids had so much fun that we ended up booking 3 more times before leaving. Our instructor Kahala was amazing with our kids (7, 9 and 10). Definitely get the pictures because having them made all the world of difference.

I chose to do a private lesson with MWR. This was my first time learning to surf. It was the best experience to have 1 on 1 instructions with my instructor Fredy. We spent 5-10 minutes with the rules, fundamentals of surfing and safety on land. Then we made our way to the water. He picked a spot for us to stay away from everyone else and catch a ton of waves. Spent the whole time catching waves, wiping out, and riding a few. Definitely have the basics of surfing and now it’s just to keep on keeping on the waves. I would highly recommend Maui Waveriders to anyone looking to learn how to surf.

Authentic with legit surfers showing you the core basics of this awesome sport. Even with low tide, the instructor taught us how to stay safe and provided key feedback after each attempt to push your learning. Good photographers (even when you wipe ;) )

Last minute booking for surf lessons. There are lots of choices for lessons. I found Maui Waveriders after a Google search for reputable surf lessons. They certainly did not disappoint. The lessons were for 2 hours, which was fantastic. The surf location was very crowded initially, Star, our instructor, was very concensus of our safety, making sure we caught a good wave and had a clear lane to surf. Having the additional hour of the lesson was fantastic; the second hour was less crowded. The family all did well and the photographer caught some great pictures and made us look like professional surfers. We were happy to pay the additional fee for the pictures. Consider MWR for your surf lessons.

This was our first time ever attending to surf and we all were able to get up! The guide was friendly, patient, and explained things in a simple way that was easy to understand. As a first timer, there are a lot of little details to remember in order to get up and while I had my share of falls, I had enough opportunities and good waves to where eventually I got up and rode the wave. Highly recommend this location to anyone thinking about surf lessons while in Maui.

Me and my girlfriend had an awesome group surf lesson this morning. I can totally recommend the earliest morning session because there are less people in the ocean. The spot is perfect for beginners, small but constant waves that allow to make great first experiences. The surf instructor was very nice and gave some great tips how to improve. In the end you also got a certificate and a trucker cap which I already wore the whole day because I liked it so much. Would definetly recommend this place to anyone being in Maui and trying to surf.

We had a semi private lesson booked at 8 am for the Lahaina location with Kyle and Kahala. We met the instructors at the beach. Our two sons, 18 & and 14, were to have their very first surf leasons! The instructor walked them through some techniques on land and prepared them for what to expect in the water. The amazing lady instructor, Kahala, guided the boys in the water on their boards. Her command of the water, and the boys was phenomenal! The boys were up on their boards and surfing small waves within the hour. Definitely money well spent with MWR! Would recommend 100%!

Kahala is an amazing instructor who loves her job and had fun on the waves with us!!! . perfect for our two teens firat time on a board. my daughter caught a wave the first try. Excelent instruction and instruction to honor the ocean and listen to what it has to teach you as you begin to surf. Kahala was so inspirational and attentive

A huge shout out to MWR and especially Kahala. My nieces had the time of their lives with her. She's an excellent instructor. She got them right in the water got them up and surfing ‍ in no time what so ever. We also purchased the photo package and gave zero regrets. They gave us a large collection of pictures of all action shots. Thank you all for making the girls first trip memorable. I'd recommend you to anyone and everyone ‍

We had signed up my son for a surf lesson with MWR and when we got there we were greeted with hugs and smiles from staff. My son was assigned to Kepa. Kepa was down to earth and a overall great and positive person. He looked at my little boy and told me he'll be riding and shredding waves in no time. We made the trek over to Breakwall and Kepa sat my boy down gave him a 20 minute lesson. My baby daughter was so enthralled by Kepa that she was copying everything him and my son were doing. Once they finished, they were out in the waves and 5-10 minutes later, my boy was surfing. They were out there for a good hour and 45 minutes. They came back and my boy was dead tired but had the time of his life. Though he didn't do the full 2 hour session we got lucky since it was a one-on-one session and my boy didn't have to wait for Kepa to help others. They just surfed and had fun. Once we finished we walked back to the shop and him and Kepa talked like they have known each other for years. Back at the shop he took photos with Kepa and he got a hat that he hasn't stopped wearing. He's hoping to have another surf lesson with Kepa again when we come back. Great instructor and my son said he made it easy for him. A 5 star recommendation from us! Thank you MWR and Kepa for introducing my son to surfing.

Thinking of you all. MWR was one of the highlights of my trip to Maui a couple of years ago. The staff was welcoming and we really enjoyed our time there. Praying that all the staff and their families are OK.

Amazing experience for my 7-year-old daughter and husband both surfing for the first time with MWR! Loved the whole team and lesson -- especially, Star, who was super patient, encouraging and they both had a great time. Highly recommend!

Great time learning to surf. Instructor Waiola (spelling?) was great! Check-In was super easy, find a rash guard and booties was also easy. They provide a small locker for you to lock up small stuff. They stressed hydrating before we walked over to the van with all the boards. Nice cold filtered water to drink. Quick beach safety and surf lesson and into water. My wife and youngest son were not surfing and they provided them chairs for the beach. After was a "surf" shower, rinse rash guard and booties; they provide a basic surf certificate for fun. Great experience! Highly recommend and don't forget to tip your instructor

This was a highlight of our trip! Staff was very friendly and helpful for our group, myself (42) and three of our kids 18 YR, 16YR and 13YR. None of us had done anything like this before so we knew nothing. Our instructor Wai was absolutely fantastic (I'd highly recommend him), he did a great job teaching us the fundamentals and getting us all surfing. Great company with great employees that made it great from beginning to end!

We enjoyed our group surfing lesson! There were 2 in our party but only 6 in the group, a good size and all of us were beginners. Location and parking were easy to find. The checkin process was simple and quick, I do recommend getting there 15min early to find your shoe and rash guard size (I sized down but had to try on a few to find the right fit). We attended the 845 class and definitely wouldn't want to be any later in the day because of the sun. Overall, everyone was very chill and friendly. We were both successful surfers and would do it again! Ps. They capture pictures while you're surfing as well, which we didn't know until getting there. We decided to do it since it was our first time and are so glad we have them!

Family lesson for 5!!! Check. A great instructor, check. We had Renten for two hours and everyone had a great time. Everyone caught waves again and again. Maui Waveriders was recommended to us, and we recommend them to you. Our kids ranging from 9-14 have been talking about it nonstop ever since. Book early so you get your choice of times!!!

we had an amazing experience at Maui waveriders. Everyone was kind and helpful. Our surf instructor Renton was very knowledgeable and extremely helpful in aiding us to learn a new sport. we had fun learned the basics and I had no trouble as a first time surfer and first time out in the ocean catching multiple waves. this was a surprise as I am a beginner swimmer and Renton made sure that we all felt comfortable and knew what to do when we were in the water. We felt cared for he definitely cared about us, the sport, and his home.

Fantastic place to learn to surf! Our coach Freddy was phenomenal- he had us up and ridding the waves on our first try. Plus he taught us how to pay attention to the currents and behavior of the ocean.

I booked this for my husband. He enjoyed the whole lesson session and he believes that his paddle skills have improved. We are satisfied with the service!

Excellent surf lessons outfit right in Lahaina with reasonable prices. Owners are super friendly and very accommodating. You have to carry your surf boards a few blocks and across the street, but it's all part of the experience. Our surf instructor, Vi, was amazing! Very knowledgeable, passionate and funny! And he can surf on his head so he is kind of a show-off, lol. We loved the experience!!

My kids were super excited for surfing lessons. We were assigned Renton as an instructor. He was NOT kid-friendly at all. My son was getting very anxious during the instructional period on the beach and the instructor seemed really impatient. He used instructional methods/analogies that my kids didn't really understand and made an inappropriate sexual comment towards me in front of all 3 of my kids. Most of his lesson consisted of him making references to 'dating' and 'going steady' with your surf board, which my 9 year old daughter did not need to hear. When she tried to use his surfboard to steady herself, he told her not to touch his board. My daughters did get up and surf for awhile, so overall, the lesson was pretty successful... just didn't think he was well-suited to be working with children.

Had such an amazing time as first time surfers! Owners and staff made us feel so comfortable and we all had a great time! If you are traveling with children, this is most definitely a family friendly business as well. Our instructor jake was so helpful! Highly recommend!!

We had an amazing experience with MWR! The entire staff ensured us a great time. I had gotten lost trying to locate the building and our group was running late - I was worried that we would be canceled but the super friendly staff reassured me that it was all good. They got us checked in and paperwork completed very efficiently and didn't rush us whatsoever. They have great amenities - lockers to store our valuables, a clean bathroom, a water dispenser, and water shoes and rash guards of various sizes to try on. There's also a shower available outside the building where you can hose down afterwards. I highly recommend purchasing the photos - we had over 300 photos of our kids that we otherwise would not been able to capture from shore. Big thanks to our instructors Josh and Manu who were super friendly, gave a great lesson while emphasizing safety (so important to me as a mom)! They especially paid close attention to my over enthusiastic 10yr old. Josh is a wonderful kid friendly instructor, and it melted my heart how he interacted with my little guy the whole time - like a big brother! I highly recommend MWR for any first time surfers, and families with young children. It was one of the highlights of our vacation by far!

Staff was super friendly including our instructor. He coached us very well and pushed me and my partner to catch a wave every time! They take incredible photos of you and I really recommend trying them out if you're staying for a couple days!!

Relaxing, exciting experience with Starr as our instructor. My two boys had lots of fun and many reps catching waves for the first time. Shop has everything you need to surf for the first time. Very experienced and encouraging instructors. Wish we could have been out and about on the water for exactly two hours, but it was still a great time.

Met Mason who turned us on to this surf shop/school. Awesome honest people who want to ensure you have a good and safe time out in the water. The people at Maui Waveriders are very nice and friendly. My husband and 2 boys really enjoyed their instructor Calvin. He was full of energy and got each of them up and surfing! My boys didn't think they would be able to surf, but they were so excited to find out they can! Thank you so much! My one suggestion would be to update the boards used to teach. The boards worked, but had wear and tear. With that being said we would go to Maui Waveriders again!

We enjoyed it and can now say we have surfed in Hawaii. Our teacher was a cool guy and we made it up on our feet a few times. Main reason for the 4 not 5 stars is just the beach. There is a good amount of coral and rocks and we both got some bumps, bruises and cuts.

Coach Kapa was very rude and ignorant to my friend who didn't know how to surf and was trying her best to learn. He only tells her what she did wrong and not what she should do instead. Extremely insulting words he said to her includes " I didn't fucking teach that", "kids don't even surf like you do", and etc. We don't know if this is some racist thing, but no one should be treated like this while on vacation.

Had to come back to do my favorite paddle-boarding company. We had a blast and saw so many turtles. I highly recommend using Maui Waveriders in Lahaina

Couldn't imagine a better experience for my first time surfing. Sunny was incredibly patient, communicative, friendly, and kind. She had me standing up on my board in no time! I had an absolute blast and will forever recommend this place (and Sunny) to everyone wanting to surf for the first time. Not only did she teach me to surf, she also gave me pointers on how to continue improving in the future. If you're looking for a place to get lessons, look no further! The people here are awesome! Super warm and friendly and our instructor Waiola kept us safe and having fun in challenging conditions. With his help, all three of us got up on our surfboards, including my 10-year-old daughter!

This was an awesome experience for my kids' first time surfing in the ocean. The staff is extremely friendly and knowledgeable, and worked well with kiddos that are beginners. We also got a hat at the end and the certificate showing that they passed the first timer surfing lessons. I would highly recommend them and will definitely be going back when going back to Maui.

Aloha! We had 4 kids, ages 11,12,13,17 participate in surf lessons and Willy was their instructor. Willy was AAHHMAZING!!! His knowledge, patience & aloha shined! He worked with them with the surf board on land then moved into the water. They each had a fabulous experience and all got up and surf several waves and they can't wait to do it again. The process of booking was easy and they were prompt and flexible with rescheduling due to the historic storm that hit Maui. Safety and the best water conditions were their concern. We highly recommend taking lessons here and ask for Willy, he was fabulous. He is local and k ow athe water and it seemed it knew everyone in town too! ‍ Mahalo

Fabulous! We had a great experience and it was all because of the instructor, Ren X. He was spiritual and chill and patient. I have zero balance and he got me up on the board right away. Worth every penny.

Our family of 5 all learned to surf thanks to Lisa! Her patience along with being a great teacher is what made her incredible! The entire team here is incredible!

SURF LESSON: My group of 7 took the surf lesson that included getting a paddle board out on the sand to do on land practicing with the instructor in front of you demonstrating. He has you practice a bunch of times so you have it in your muscle memory. Then he shows you where to wait in the water by a buoy to wait for the instructor to take you on a wave. They tell you when to paddle your arms and when to pop UP! They are behind you to give you an extra push into the wave which really helps. You're in a paddle board so it's wider and easier to balance on. Definite confident booster for beginners. PHOTO: Photographer uses a good quality camera and takes photos and gets your attention to smile at him and do a hang loose sign. He also takes model shots close up of you. GEAR: They have everything except for towels. Included are water shoes, surf long sleeve shirt(you'll want to wear to protect yourself from the board and so the photographer knows you're part of the group), water to keep you hydrated at the shop for before and after. Showers by the ocean and a shower back at the shop to rinse off. END: Surf certificate makes you feel giddy like you got a gold star in kindergarten. Cool trucker style hat to help advertise for them and look stylish at the same time. The photographer shows the slideshow and you can't help but want the photos so pay for them and enjoy. Bring a USB flash drive of your own to save $5 buying one. OVERALL: I recommend this place. They also give you a code for free drink at the pizza place next door. They were professional and fun at the same time.

My wife and I booked a semi private lesson for 2 hours. We signed in and we're given rash guards and booties and then we headed down to the beach which was a block away. Our instructor was Kahala. She was really great, patient and easy to work with. She showed us the basics about getting up on the surfboard and keeping our balance. I was able to stand by the second wave and my wife was able to semi stand by the end of the lesson. As long as you follow her instructions you'll be fine. I'd totally recommend Kahala and Maui Waveriders. The prices are reasonable and they're very friendly and helpful. You can also rent boards from them after your done with class. They also give you a certificate of completion and a free hat as well.

I had a great time - we did a semi-private lesson and I'd had a bad experience during my last surf lesson. Kahala really helped me overcome my fear and get comfortable in the waves again. It was truly a spiritual experience for me. I am so thankful for this!

I impulsively took a surf lesson and they were able to squeeze me in last minute. Staff were super informative and friendly. Got a great overview of what I'd experience beforehand so there wouldn't be any surprises, and even gave my bf his board rental for longer than the price he rented it for. I had Sonny and Pono for my instructor. Guys were super helpful and really put our group at ease. It's a two hour intro lesson with a max of 6 people per group. You can pay extra for a semi private or private lesson too. Only difference with those is that you'll have more time to try riding a wave since everyone goes one at a time. In a group of 6 class everyone went 5-6 times each. It doesn't sound like much, but honestly you're so exhausted from paddling the waves, I wouldn't have made it going more. My arms and back felt like jello the rest of the day and next! Great workout!! First half hour-ish you're on the sand as they're teaching you what to do and expect in the water. After that, everyone immediately gets into the water and it's one at a time attempting to surf so the instructors can give each person their undivided attention. No one had the arm strength to go fast enough for how small these waves are but Sonny and Pono helped each person with a friendly push to the back of our boards, pulling us along to get over waves, yelling out encouragement, and riding with us if we needed extra attention to ensure everyone can stand up for this lesson! I don't know what the average stand up on your board rate is but my group all stood up, and a bunch of us made it to the beach without falling (multiple times too!) I completely forgot there was a photographer there taking pics, so I was super concentrating on not falling but if this is something you want to capture, make sure to smile haha. A CD of pics are $25. I don't know if you can purchase just one or two photos as I only overheard the full price.

Maui Waveriders took care of us in every way possible! Kahala was an amazing instructor that gave us great insight into surfing. She is extremely knowledgeable, patient, and just a great all around instructor. Naomi, who runs the shop, was an absolute gem. She was so laid back, kind, and efficient in getting us our gear for surfing the day after our lesson. The class must have paid off--both my fiancé and I were able to go out on our own and catch several really great waves!! We can't say enough about the amazing people that run Maui Waveriders in Lahaina. Mahalo and see you next time!

What an excellent outfit to surf with!! Great crew to learn surfing with for the first time - just a super team!! Husband opted for a private lesson and was paired with Ren - great experience and exceptional teacher!! They offer everything you need to hit the waves and even have a photographer so your loved ones can just enjoy watching and cheering you on giving you the option to purchase photos after (super reasonable). Plan on visiting again on next Maui trip!

Overweight people might find another company. Came alone to take a few photos of friends and Willie was not happy... their photographer was super nice. Maybe Willie will be happy some day like his photographer and be nicer to guest of clients. Lots of fat comments about my belly and weight issues.

Easy online booking for group lesson for 2 people. Ended up being a private lesson for just us 2! Easy to find in Lahaina. Public parking across the street. Provides all the equipment. Friendly and helpful. Short walk to pickup boards and get into the water in the wharf at Lahaina. Instructor was good. Good facilities. +1 for the chill reggae music and friendly vibes. I would go again.

It was an average experience and not bad. My family and I would have preferred to have spent a little more time on the beach learning the step by step drills to stand when it was time after catching a wave, although we did practice once before we went out. I would suggest you go on off peak times, as we booked a mid-morning semi-private lesson. It was so jammed packed with other groups from other schools, you had to compete to get your turn with the instructor Trinity who sometimes couldn't get the other students from other schools out of the line of direction. Literally, we were sometimes inches apart in dangerous situations and the markers for safety were not anchored correctly and drifted. However, the instructor Trinity appeared to be a fabulous surfer and could push the end of your surfboard for you really well. For the amount of the lesson, it was otherwise worth it.

The activities coordinator at our hotel in Kaanapali recommended Maui Wave Riders for our daughter to take some surf lessons. We scheduled for an early start since we're desert folks and figured our 14yo daughter could take advantage of the calm water first thing in the morning. We were greeted like old friends when we arrived. Luckily for us our daughter was the only one signed up for surf lessons first thing that morning. She was paired with Sonny for what turned out to be a one on one lesson. Sonny made everyone feel comfortable and explained what the process would be. Having a stranger spend alone time with your 14yo daughter can be a little unnerving, but Sonny and everyone at Maui Wave Riders made us super comfortable. Sonny was great and had our daughter standing, riding waves on her second attempt after a little on shore instruction. The next two hours consisted of superior guidance and making our daughter looked like a natural, venturing further and further away from shore. Sonny cheered for her and gave her positive feedback throughout the lesson. Would highly recommend MWR. They also have an in-house photographer (amazing photos!). Our daughter received a souvenir certificate and hat as part of her lesson. Think we have a surfer for life in the family now. Mahalo Sonny and Andre.

Had 2 surfers take lessons and had a great time with their instructor Lisa. She had them both up in no time. On our last trip here we took paddle board lessons and had a blast as well. Definitely recommend Maui Waveriders.

Fpund this school by checking out Yelp reviews. Not sure if this is the one I went to but I learned to surf about 25 years ago in Lahaina and got hooked. This time we wanted our 8 year old twins to learn and get hooked. I had tried to teach them before in California where we live but it was too cold for them and I was not a very good teacher. This time we had Willie, great with the kids and an excellent instructor. Both of our kids got about 16 waves a piece and loved it. My Son wants us to buy him a board but first we have to see how he does on his own as Willie was helping them out by pushing them into the ways. But both our daughter and son did great paddling and Willie helped with that as he did not help them and told us not to and had them work hard the whole time. Overall an excellent experience.

We had such a great experience! Our instructor Lisa was phenomenal . She was excellent with the kids and so much fun! The owners were great too! Everyone in our party surfed and had a blast!!!

We had a group of 6 with Jimmy. Jimmy was so patient and so helpful. I struggled hard but Jimmy made the experience awesome. All of the other employees, including Freddie & Nellie (I think that was her name) were so friendly and welcoming. The photographer, Andre, took clear shots of us and got cute poses with the surfboard. Definitely would recommend to any first timers.

It was both of my boys (13,10) first time surfing. The instructor was so incredibly patient with both of them! Both of the boys even got up several times and rode the waves!

We signed up for a family lesson and had a great experience. Everyone was very kind and pleasant. All the teachers were qualified. Our instructor is an awesome person and approached teaching surfing from a holistic and spiritual place. All four of us were successful in surfing which is saying a lot for me. Highly recommend the business and strongly encourage getting the photo packages especially for us mainlanders.
