Maungawhau / Mount Eden

I highly recommend going here if you’re visiting Auckland. It was one of my highlights of my time in the city. You get 360 degree views of the entire city of Auckland and surrounding area, including the CBD. It’s super cool walking around the volcano, it’s a giant grassy bowl in the middle that’s huge. The walkways up top are easy to navigate, and you can walk all the way around and enjoy unobstructed views on all sides. It’s also not difficult to get up from the main parking area. If you don’t go here during your time in Auckland, you’re missing out!

If you only have time to visit one volcano in Auckland, make it this one. As the highest natural point in the city (196 meters), Mount Eden offers the absolute best 360-degree views of the isthmus. It is a dormant volcanic cone that holds deep historical and cultural significance for the Māori people.🚶 The Climb (Accessibility)Vehicle Access: Important! You cannot drive to the summit anymore. Vehicles were banned a few years ago to protect the mountain. The Walk: You park at the base (near the Tahaki Reserve or the Whau Cafe) and walk up. Difficulty: Moderate. It is a paved road/path all the way up. It takes about 15–20 minutes for an average walker to reach the top. It is steep in some sections, but there are plenty of spots to stop and catch your breath. Boardwalks: Once at the top, there are excellent wooden boardwalks that guide you around the crater rim.

What a cool and unique spot especially during sunset as you can see the sun’s glowing glaze pierce through the city. It was a light hike compared to Mount Victoria. Highly recommend seeing this view at least once during your time in Auckland. Truly memorable!

We went at the end of the summer just at the beginning of autumn. It was still Pretty warm at the midday. It’s a steep walk up but I saw accessible parking for those who are unable to walk. The views are lovely. 360° of Auckland and the surrounding areas. The walk down is steep no matter if you take the road or the trail. Worth the effort if you can physically make a strenuous walk for 20 mins or so.

Beautiful view on the whole city of Auckland. Can be busy in the evening, but most people don't know that there is a second platform a bit under the big one on top. More beautiful view on Downtown included and there are even a few benches to sit on. It's best to go there for sunset.

A must-see if u only have 1-2 days in Auckland. insane 360° city views. walk up is easy and chill.

A must visit spot in Auckland with stunning 360° views of the city. The walk to the top is not difficult and rewards you with the impressive crater of an extinct volcano. Rich in history with visible Māori terracing, and well-preserved as a natural, peaceful place right in the heart of the city.

Not too high and not too low. Just right height mountain to see good sunset and city by night. Couple parking spaces around the mountain and hike up.
