Mauritius Postal Museum

First of the positives: - Located near the port and easily accessible - Really low entrance fee (about 3€) - Gives a good overview of the postal history of Mauritius Now some general Information: The museum is structured by big boards with information and pictures on them telling the postal story of Mauritius. There are clear numbers next to every board telling you their order. (even though I felt like some numbers where missing, the numeration definitely helped) The description on the boards is available in English and French. In between the boards there were multiple scenes, instruments and outfits displayed. Also stamps. So if you are a stamp fan/collector there is definitely a lot to see for you. Personally I think the area could have been spread out a bit more, you can clearly feel the space constraints of the building which makes the walking path sometimes a bit convoluted. Also I would not recommend this museum to anyone with smaller kids. Yes there are the scenes I mentioned before, but there is also reading. A lot of it. So smaller kids might get bored rather quickly. All in all an okay museum that could use a bit of a brush up. Takes about 30 mins - 2 hours to walk through depending on how much you read.

We’re so glad we stopped by the Postal Museum of Mauritius! They have an excellent collection of stamps for collectors, with a huge variety of denominations. The staff were extremely cordial, helpful, and patient as we browsed through their collection. The museum itself is also a great visit — very informative and well laid out. It’s free for kids aged 7 and under, which makes it a wonderful family-friendly stop. Kids and adults who are curious about philately, or just starting out, should definitely drop by. We even bought some beautiful stamps as gifts for friends and family — such a nice alternative to the usual fridge magnets! There’s ample paid parking available at the Granary next to the museum, and the waterfront nearby is a great place to spend some extra time after your visit.

Great museum situation inside the post office. A 10 minute walk from Waterfront. Entrance fee application, not expensive consessions for seniors see pictures. Doesn't take too long to walk around. Interesting history about sending mail. Wasn't busy only me and hubby. Great visit if you want to get out of the sun and heat. Highly recommended

I heard about it so I decided to go and see by myself. There are several boards on the wall for readers who wants to learn thoroughly about the history of the post. As well as many objects which depicts how the post office functioned back in time. There is also an enlarged version of the so famous penny black stamp. Stamps archive are available on the first floor. Entrance fee for locals is Rs50 and Rs200 approximately for tourists I think.

It has an original of the Black Penny stamp, which was quite cool! Otherwise it’s a pretty small museum that quickly captures the history of Post in Mauritius

It is the best place for stamps lovers. Also, a great place to learn about the history of Mauritius Postal services. From the British Colonial Postal Ways till now, it is shown clearly. Even for kids, they have prepared the cute little explanation for kids to understand easily. They have the collection on stamps since the beginning. The stamps are so pretty and many of them are detailedly portrait or drawn. Personally, I love the theme of the ships, the maps, the sugar cane factories. They all represent the development of the Island. Worth a visit to this wonderful museum. Other than this, you can also purchase some beautiful postcards here. The stamps can be bought on the other side of the museum.

Loved the history. My great great grandfather left Mauritius in 1868. So I found it extremely interesting. Interesting.
